Small Classes

The key to individual learning

Small classes enable students to be treated as individuals and to be given individual attention. Haileybury has small class sizes across all stages of schooling.

Small classes in the Junior School enable the strong focus on core literacy and numeracy skills to have the optimum effect.

In the Middle Years and Pre-Senior Year, small classes enable individual attention to students as they further develop their analytical thinking and reasoning skills.

In the Senior School, small classes, combined with a breadth of subject choices, enable students to develop their skills through regular feedback during class and with coursework be thoroughly prepared for examinations. 

Despite growing enrolment and waiting lists, Haileybury has small classes with the following indicative sizes:

  • Where numbers exceed indicative sizes because of unforeseen factors, additional staffing may be provided
  • Tolerance: two students for all classes
  • Council may vary policy if government funding arrangements or educational strategies change
  • The City campus has a tolerance of 4 students per class
