Christmas Tree Magic

It is breath-taking to see so many contributions under our Christmas tree in the administration foyer. Thank you to all our families for their generosity. There are still a few days left in which donations will be accepted before being sent to Anglicare to distribute prior to Christmas Day.

Team Kids will be operating programs across the summer holidays, please click here for all the details.

Term 1 2023

We look forward to welcoming students back to School on Monday, 30 January and we ask that students arrive by 8.25 am and bring all the items from their booklist. Further details will be sent out during the holidays regarding arrangements.

End of 2022

2022 has been a fantastic year at Castlefield. I thank our outstanding students for the dedication to their learning and their connectedness across the School. They have ensured this year will be remembered so richly in Haileybury’s history.

I thank our parents for their continued support and involvement, and our staff for the exceptional passion and care they devote to our students each and every day.

Please enjoy the festive season and have a safe and pleasant holiday break with your family. I look forward to our continued association in 2023.

Mindfulness in a Time of Busyness

As we spend time winding down, celebrating the year and looking forward to next year, it’s important to remember to be in the present. The ELC has recently added a new aquarium in the foyer for all to share. We can expand on mindful learning practices while watching the fish, swaying plant life and the constant stream of tiny bubbles oxygenating the water.

Orientation

On Saturday, 26 November we warmly welcomed next year’s ELC students and parents. The meeting was an opportunity for children to meet their educators and peers and spend some time in their learning environments. It was lovely to see children eager and engaged, and each child took home a small gift to enhance their sense of belonging to their 2023 class.

Celebrating Good Times

After many practices in the classrooms and on stage, the ELC recently celebrated with an end of year concert in Dickinson Hall. The Reception and Pre-Prep groups did an amazing job, finishing their performance for families with a group rendition of Celebrate good times.

This week, as the School year wraps up, each group will hold a class party and the children’s learning journals will be presented — a collection of memorable moments and evidence of learning from their year in the ELC.

Junior School

The Wheels on the Bus...

For some students the bus ride on the day of an excursion is a great highlight in itself! Lots of adventures have been had in the last few weeks, with the Preps meeting Prep students from each of the Melbourne campuses and visiting the zoo.

Our Year 1 students headed to Twisted Science for some great hands-on experiments and the Year 4 students explored Melbourne Museum and a show at the IMAX cinema.

We’re always proud of how our students conduct themselves in these public places — always with respect and manners that are noticed by teachers and venue coordinators.

Art Class

For art this term, our Prep students have been exploring diversity and looking at what lives in our oceans. Eliza Wang chose to make an octopus in paper clay. Students experimented with clay and mosaic materials, and environments for their creatures were constructed in crayon and watercolour paint.

Year 1 students are exploring change and are looking at the weather and its influence on our lifestyle and the environment. Students have explored artworks by Vincent Van Gogh that look closely at the seasons and they constructed windsocks that they decorated using frottage, or leaf rubbing art.

Congratulations

With their time in the Junior School coming to a close, we congratulate all our Year 4 students as they embark on the next stage of their education and enter the Boys Middle School and Girls Middle School.

Thank you for your service to the School by running recess and lunch time clubs, for being buddies to our Prep students, speaking at assemblies and for engaging with our community in your social justice endeavours. The Graduation Assembly was a highlight and a significant milestone for each student as they passed over the Junior School bridge.

Middle School

Jumpstarting into 2023

The Middle School has been a hive of activity, despite the absence of a whole Year Level. Term 1A has seen staff and students refreshed, re-engaged and invigorated on their jumpstart in to 2023. It is amazing to see how quickly students adjust, relocate their games areas and friendship groups, and move on to ‘greener pastures’.

This peaceful transition and reset occurs as soon as the Year 8s move into Pre-Senior. Congratulations to the Year 7s for their seamless move into Year 8, and to the Years 5 and 6 students who have maintained an incredibly high work ethic.

A holiday is not far away, and as we all eye off the finish line, we are reminded to focus on our technique, hold our form, finish strong and run right through the finish line.

Farewell Doug Bailey

As the year comes to an end, I wish to thank and acknowledge the leadership of Doug Bailey in his role as Head of Boys Middle School and as Senior Deputy Head of Campus. Doug’s impact on the Boys Middle School has been one of kindness and connection with the students, staff and parents.

On behalf of our whole School community, we thank Doug for the work he has done in shaping the Boys Middle School and we wish him all the best in his next venture.

Safe Holidays and Get Ready for 2023

As we come to the end of the year, we look back and appreciate the many events we have been able to attend as students or parents — a vast difference to the past couple of years. We’ve held Year level nights at the Marine Hotel, a Mother’s Day Lunch at Encore, a Years 5 and 6 Disco, Junior School movie night, Junior School Halloween Disco and Middle School bowling nights.

These events would not run successfully without help from our wonderful parent volunteers, so thank you to those who assisted throughout the year.

Please don’t forget the Second-hand Uniform Shop (SHUS) for any uniform requirements for next year. Our final day of service this year is Thursday, 8 December from 2.00 pm – 4.00 pm.

The SHUS will be open on Tuesday, 24 and Wednesday, 25 January 2023 from 10.00 am – 1.00 pm.

We look forward to another busy year in 2023 and wish you all a merry Christmas and safe and wonderful New Year.
