Founders Day Celebrations

Edrington Middle School students enjoyed hearing from former Haileybury student, Mr Chris Schreurs, at the recent Founders Day Assembly. Chris graduated in 1997 and was interviewed by his son, Oliver Schreurs, (Year 7).

We were also fortunate to have Vice Principal, Mr Scott Doran, in attendance and Chris let us know that Scott had been one of his teachers. Chris offered a wonderful insight into where we have come from as a campus and, although many things have changed at Edrington, the essence of who we are has remained the same.

Founders Day

Edrington Picnic

We invite families to our Edrington Picnic on Friday, 1 April, from 3.30 pm to 6.30 pm. ELC, Junior and Middle School families are all welcome to attend. There will be food trucks, entertainment, rides and more. More details on the myHaileybury app.

Thank you to the HPFE

There was much appreciation for our HPFE (Haileybury Parent and Friends Edrington) parent helpers as they made pancakes for Shrove Tuesday for the ELC, Junior School and Middle School students. Thank you to all parents who assisted on the day.

Early Learning Centre

Literacy in the ELC

“The fire of literacy is created by the emotional sparks between a child, a book and the person reading”
Mem Fox

The ELC Literacy Program began on day one of Term 1 and is in full swing. In Reception, the current focus is on books, comprehension, learning and recalling simple songs and rhymes. Reading stories daily promotes a love of literacy and develops children’s language skills and increases vocabulary, grammar and punctuation.

Seeing text in books and signs in their environment develops knowledge of letters and their formations. Comprehension is integral in developing children’s understanding of text and meaning and simple questions using What? How? Who? and When? direct children’s thinking and build their ability to interpret what they are reading.

Children will also be looking at letters from the alphabet and staff will be working with them to assess their existing knowledge of letters and sounds.

Pre-Prep students are learning letter names and sounds through our Phonics Program. Many children come into the ELC with existing letter recognition and have already commenced learning letters and sounds within the Reception Program.

However, it is important for children to refresh their knowledge and help cement this learning into long-term memory. Two sounds are introduced each week and are revised regularly. Blending—joining sounds together to make a word, and segmenting—pulling letters apart to make a word, will also be taught alongside the program to further develop pre-reading skills.

Junior School

Cheer on Our Athletes

Junior School Athletics has moved to Thursday, 10 March, at 1.15 pm on Main Oval, near the Pavilion. Students must wear their sport uniform with house colour polo top.

Parents are invited to attend this event to cheer on our runners. Please remain behind the bunting and do not come to the house tents on the other side of the field. Parents must be fully vaccinated and QR code on the day.

Grandparents & Special Friends’ Morning

It has been far too long since we have had our grandparents and special friends visit us and we look forward to this event on Tuesday, 22 March.

All adults must be fully vaccinated, wear masks and QR code upon arrival.

We plan to start in the classrooms with grandparents and special friends visiting the children and we will then make our way to the John Twist Hall to be entertained by our Junior School Choirs. We will finish with a morning tea in the Sports Hall. More details to come through myHaileybury.

House Athletics

We look forward to seeing our Middle School getting into the house spirit for this year’s House Athletics Competition. It will be held on the Main Oval on Tuesday, 8 March.

Recognising International Women’s Day

Over the past week we have been celebrating equality with our boys and girls. During Homeroom sessions, the students have participated in activities and competed in a colouring competition. These activities help build understanding about the significance of this day and the importance of gender equality across our society.

Haileybury Parents & Friends Edrington (HPFE)

Hi Edrington families! Freedom appears to be back on the menu—as were pancakes last week! As always, Shrove Tuesday was a massive hit for our children and there were so many happy chocolatey faces.

Tracy has been very busy selecting the most amazing Mothers Day gifts for our Mothers Day stall this year. I can’t wait for Mothers Day.

As always, the Uniform Shop is open every Wednesday morning. Pop in and visit Di for all your uniform needs.

Winter Warmers is back on for Term 2. Tickets from last year’s ticket sales are still valid and we will be selling more tickets now that we aren’t restricted by numbers. It’s going to be such a fun night!

Welcome to all our Class Reps. Keep an eye out for coffee catch ups and dinners with your fellow class parents.

Our next HPFE meeting will be held in the Pavilion on Friday, 11 March, at 2.15 pm. Come along, get involved and enjoy some afternoon tea before school pick-up.

See you there!
