GENERAL NEWS
Over the next two weeks,
preparations will commence for the National Assessment Program – Literacy and
Numeracy (NAPLAN) for our Years 3, 5 and 7 students. All parents with students involved will soon
receive a letter and information brochure explaining the nation-wide initiative.
Our Mothers Day
celebrations will be held across the School the week leading up to Mothers Day.
The ELC will celebrate their mothers
with a special 'ball'; our Junior School have a range of fun activities in
store, including Zumba; while our Middle School celebrate in style with a
special breakfast. Please ensure you
RSVP for any events you are available to attend to aid catering.
School Tours will be held
next Saturday, 2 May, across the School. We are also excited to hold a special tour for
Pre-Prep parents on Friday, 1 May, to allow interested families an opportunity
to see the Prep classes in action as we commence conversations around
transition to School in 2016.
We welcome Ms
Amanda Tweedie as our new ELC and JS Music teacher at Haileybury. Ms Tweedie will be replacing Ms Rebecca Rouse
who is moving to a school closer to home. Ms
Tweedie will commence with us next week.
Can I take
this opportunity to remind families about the crossings at the front of the School.
We have added a second crossing to this
area, so they are now at the front and back of the drop-off zone to help ensure
the students' safety.
EARLY LEARNING CENTRE
Mothers Day Ball
The excitement is slowly
building in the ELC for one of the special events on the Edrington ELC calendar
for 2015. Our Mothers Day Ball will be
held in John Twist Hall on the evening of Tuesday, 5 May. Invitations have been sent, RSVPs are
streaming in and fun outfits are being discussed. Senior String students will welcome you all
with a classical musical item. A photo
booth to capture this event is also planned, along with many other surprises
throughout the night. The evening will
conclude with a special performance and a surprise gift for all mums. We hope our ELC community will be able to
join us to celebrate and thank our mothers for the wonderful job they do.
Prep Visit
Pre-Prep families have
been sent a letter inviting them to attend a tour of Junior School, with Head
of Junior School Ms Melissa Schoorman and myself, on 1 May. The aim of this is to provide parents an
opportunity to see Edrington's Junior School teaching methods in action, as
well allowing time for you to ask any questions you may have.
JUNIOR SCHOOL
Mothers Day
Our Mothers Day celebrations this year will take the form of a
collection of exciting afternoon activities. The activities commence at 1.45 pm and run
through to 3.30 pm. Information has been
sent home this week with further details.
Junior School 'Wonder of the Week'
In addition
to our Inquiry curriculum, Junior School students are encouraged to investigate
the 'Wonder of the Week'. This new
initiative is aimed at engaging students in independent inquiry. Each week a new question along with answers
from the previous week will be displayed on our 'Wonder of the Week' notice
board outside Ms Schoorman's office. Children
are able do some research by visiting the Library, using the internet at home,
or seeking out people who might be able to help. This week's wonder is 'Why are poppies a
symbol of ANZAC day?'
Year 1 Excursion to Rippon Lea
As
part of our Inquiry study, 'Life today is different than the past', Year 1
students will be visiting Rippon Lea House and Gardens on Tuesday, 28
April. While there, students will be
involved in a range of sessions and look at the story of the Sargood family who
lived in Rippon Lea in the 1870s. The
Year 1s will be given an authentic taste of school in the 19th
century as well as compare the education system now to what it was like then.
Parent Helpers Course
Head of
Junior School Melissa Schoorman will run a follow-up Parent Helper Course for
anyone interested who was unable to attend in Term 1. The course will cover Explicit Teaching techniques
and will be held in the Library on Wednesday, 29May, at 4.00 pm. Please email Melissa Schoorman if you would
like to attend.
MIDDLE SCHOOL
"The dictionary is the only place that success comes before work. Work is the key to success, and hard work can
help you accomplish anything." (Vince Lombardi)
The Middle
School aims for everyone to have the attitude, tools and strategies to be an
effective learner. Not all of us are
naturally good at everything, and even when we are, we can get better! With examinations approaching and work commitments increasing,
the Year 7 and 8 boys and girls are looking at effective study habits and our
attitudes towards them. In addition, we
are exploring the use of strategies to achieve academic growth and well-being
goals.
The Middle School Mothers
Day breakfast will be held on Friday, 8 May, in John Twist Hall. It will be a wonderful opportunity to be
entertained by some of our Middle School students while enjoying breakfast with
your child.
The Dance and Aerobics team
performed exceptionally well last Tuesday night and are ready for a big season.
We wish them luck in all their pursuits
this year.
