Hosting the Sony Foundation Children’s Holiday Camp has become a treasured tradition at Haileybury Rendall School, and this year marked our 18th consecutive year of welcoming this remarkable program to our campus. At the end of Term 2, 20 of our Years 11 and 12 students generously gave up their weekend to become full-time companions and carers for 10 local children with disabilities, providing families with a well-earned break while gaining an invaluable understanding of the dedication and love that parents show every day.
Over the weekend, our students formed genuine friendships with their campers while enjoying activities including bracelet making, origami, puzzles, soccer, table tennis, air hockey, bubble blowing, visits to the local play centre and much more. As one staff volunteer reflected, the enthusiasm, patience and care shown by our students highlighted the very best of our school community.
Our students spoke passionately about the lasting impact of the camp. Year 12 student Sam described it as “a unique and inspiring opportunity” he would remember for a lifetime, while Isaac reflected on learning “valuable lessons about empathy, giving back and making a positive impact on others.” Their words, alongside those of many other students and staff, highlight the profound impact Sony Camp has on everyone involved.
This life-changing experience was made possible through the outstanding leadership of Mrs Pickering-Tyers, whose commitment to the program continues to inspire our students, staff and wider community. I also extend my thanks to the many staff, school nurses and volunteers who gave their time to ensure the weekend was such a success.
Sony Camp is a powerful reminder that service, compassion and kindness are at the heart of a Haileybury Rendall School education. We are incredibly proud of every student and staff member who made this year’s camp such a positive experience for these young people.
