Wellbeing at Haileybury

Providing holistic support for a healthy mind and body

Thumb 40

Haileybury’s comprehensive wellbeing program supports our school’s strong belief that ‘every student matters every day.’ When physical and emotional wellbeing are prioritised and nurtured, young people can become the best version of themselves.

From ELC through to the final days of Year 12, Haileybury students benefit from a comprehensive and responsive wellbeing program that is led by a dedicated team that includes psychologists, registered nurses and specialists in child and teenage health, personal development and wellbeing.

Our Heads of School, Heads of House and Homeroom Teachers are also an integral part of our wellbeing program.

Along with supporting students in their personal development and providing individual care to students and their families, the wellbeing program equips young people with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive — at school and beyond.

Our wrap-around pastoral care helps every student to realise their academic, social, physical and emotional potential.

Wellbeing in Junior School

Wellbeing begins every morning in the Home Room with teachers talking with their students and using this time to connect, encourage and inspire. The morning sessions are also an opportunity to identify any emerging issues and to arrange extra support for students as required.

Wellbeing is an important part of the weekly and termly curriculum with students taking part in age and stage-appropriate lessons. The key topics covered in these lessons include emotional regulation, social skills, cyber-safety, child safety and Haileybury’s Respectful Relationships pillars. Students engage in discussion, activities and role-play, promoting positive communication and building a growth mindset. These skills are then transferred to the playground and social situations, where students use the shared language and respectful relationships to foster friendships and leadership skills.

Wellbeing in Middle School

Our Middle School program supports students through key developmental stages. Within single-gender classes, students continue to stay connected to their Home Room teacher who oversees their social and emotional journey each morning.

In both our Girls School and Boys School, teachers are supported by the Pastoral Care Leaders who play a proactive role in carefully monitoring the wellbeing journey of each student across the Middle School.

The evidence-based wellbeing curriculum is taught weekly and engages and encourages students in a safe and supportive environment where they can ask questions and discuss topics that matter, such as how to foster respectful relationships. Wellbeing lessons are further supported by professional external providers who utilise their expertise to deliver a range of programs across key wellbeing areas.

Wellbeing in Senior School

The later school years present unique challenges as young adults embark on a VCE pathway and more intense study. The Senior School Wellbeing program ensures each student receives the timely practical and emotional support they need, so they can thrive and succeed while maintaining a balanced lifestyle.

From Year 10, students join a tutor group that provides a safe and stable space to connect with other students and with their tutor. Students remain in the same tutor group with the same tutor for the remainder of their time at Haileybury. Tutor groups are also supported by a Head of House and dedicated pastoral care experts who offer bespoke guidance and support.

The Senior School curriculum also includes sessions that cover key topics such as how to build healthy and respectful relationships, consent, emotional intelligence, personal values, positive mental health, digital citizenship and inclusivity.

Physical, emotional and social wellbeing are paramount for young people to learn, move forward and lead fulfilling and happy lives, which is why wellbeing is as much a part of the fabric of Haileybury as our focus on outstanding academic achievement and opportunity.

Every student matters every day.
