Old Haileyburians Association

What a fabulous day!

The annual OHA Golf Day at Southern Golf Club in September was another sell-out event with 120 players keenly taking part.

Congratulations to Jason Ellenport (OH 1987) who won the Hattam-Metherall trophy. We also applaud our runners-up: Gary Ferguson (OH 2004), Wes Evans (current parent) and Janine Wade (current parent).

Well done to Ian Clydesdale (OH 1977) our Forty Years On winner, and to Graham Leys, our staff winner, and James Connell (OH 2022) who was named best young player. We are incredibly grateful to Mercedes-Benz Berwick for their sponsorship and to all the players for a wonderful day.

Tim Doran (OH 1984) nearly scored a hole in one and was the closest to winning a Mercedes-Benz on the par 3, 16th hole.

Don’t miss your place in the field in 2024 and be in the running for a Mercedes-Benz!

Celebrating our teachers

In this issue of Insight, we shine a spotlight on the incredible journey of Mark Harrop (OH 1987).

Mark’s story is one of passion, dedication and a touch of serendipity. From being a Haileybury student to becoming a remarkable staff member and a proud Haileybury parent, Mark’s journey is inspiring.

As a Maths and Physical Education teacher at Newlands and Castlefield, Mark’s teaching philosophy is all about forming strong relationships with students. He does this by bringing fun and humour into the classroom and by creating an environment that inspires and engages his students. One of his former students says, “I would like to mention Mark Harrop as my favourite teacher. A great teacher!”

However, Mark’s connection to Haileybury goes beyond the classroom. He met his lovely wife, Bronwyn, at the School and they are now proud parents of three children: Jazmin (OH 2022), Jack (Year 11), and Ben (Year 9).

Mark is also part of the extraordinarily sporty Harrop family along with brothers Scott (OH 1989), Dean (OH 1996) and Brett (OH 1997). Last year, there was a Harrop representing every year level from Years 7 to 12!

Mark reflects on his teaching journey, saying, “I’ve enjoyed teaching more and more each year and I am grateful for the opportunities provided to me at Haileybury. I love how every day is different.”

Currently, Mark is doing a stellar job as Acting Head of Newlands and he continues to inspire and guide the next generation of Haileybury students on their educational journey.

Please join us in congratulating Mark Harrop on his outstanding contributions to education and to the Haileybury community!
