Hearts on Fire Webinar

Hearts on Fire is Haileybury’s newest leadership group providing girls with a space to learn more about professional life.

Created by current Haileybury Girls College student Brigitte Shill (Year 12-Senior school), Hearts on Fire focuses on issues women are facing in the workforce and aims to provide girls with strategies on how best to thrive within their chosen profession.

With already 170 members taking part in the discussion, our students are supporting each others’ goals, questions and stories, and taking charge of their future.

The group is hosting a webinar series, interviewing Old Haileyburians who have made great strides in their career. The latest interview features Amy Dowel - Haileybury's first female engineer.

Graduating in 2007, Amy was part of Haileybury’s first female class and went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from Monash University.

Amy now works as a Senior Project Engineer with experience on many large scale projects, including the Westgate Tunnel. She offered our girls great insight into her role in the construction industry and how she navigates a male-dominated field.

When asked for her advice for future engineers, Amy said:

“It’s going to be hard, so you need to go in determined. If you love maths and the idea of building something…then go for it. It’s fun and its rewarding."
