A Warm Welcome

Welcome to all our new and returning City families. We look forward to a wonderful 2022 and to seeing our students learning and growing. We’re sure students are eager to walk through the gates, to see all their friends and to make some new ones. Our staff have been working hard on planning some great learning experiences and they are very excited to spend their first day with students on Thursday, 27 January.

During the holiday break, the City campus has been busy and lots of work has been done to prepare for our students. Early Learning Centre (ELC) staff and families have already been learning for a few weeks and Mrs Rachel Pontikis and her team have been happily leading the children’s indoor and outdoor play.

There is always an extra special buzz of excitement in the building on the first day of term. We look forward to welcoming our Prep to Year 12 students on Thursday, 27 January.

Congratulations to our City Graduates of 2021

Despite the challenges faced by students, our City graduates finished the year as strongly as they started. They were focused, determined and worked hard throughout the pandemic and our staff were outstanding at teaching, challenging, supporting and caring for every student, every day at Haileybury City.

We were thrilled with the excellent results achieved in the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) exams by our graduates and there were many success stories from this cohort. In particular, we congratulate Daniel Greenham and Samarth Ram Raghavendra on achieving an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) of 99.95—such an incredible achievement by these City students.

Samarth was elected by his peers to lead City campus as our Senior Prefect and he did so with commitment and respect, while maintaining strong academic results and contributing to the Co-Curricular Program and our School Tours. Daniel attended Brighton campus from Prep until he transferred to City campus when we opened. He proudly knows no school other than Haileybury!

We also congratulate Samarth who achieved a perfect study score of 50 in English and Jiaqi Lu who achieved a perfect study score of 50 in Mathematical Methods. Our Haileybury pillar of academic excellence stands strong as we start 2022 and we are so proud of every City graduate from the class of 2021.

I look forward to seeing you all online at our upcoming ELC, JS and MS Parent Information Sessions.

Early Learning Centre

Welcome to 2022 in the ELC

We have started the new year with smiling faces, new friends and a sense of belonging within the ELC. The principle of ‘belonging’ within our Early Years Framework is of huge importance, as children ease into a new year and new routines.

As Reception children settle into their learning environment, morning routines have provided opportunities for them to develop their skills in independence. Children have shown great pride when carrying their own school bag and placing these into their locker each morning.

Family photos on each locker and located throughout the room provide a sense of connection and belonging for children within their new environment. Pre-Prep have welcomed back old friends and, excitingly, met some new friends. Our Pre-Prep children continue to develop a sense of belonging as they learn more about their peers, establish or strengthen new and existing friendships and engage with their environment.

ELC Information Session

We invite all parents to attend the upcoming Parent Information Session on Tuesday, 1 February at 2.00 pm on Zoom. The session outlines key components of our program at Haileybury City ELC. Please look for more information via the myHaileybury app in coming weeks.

Junior School

Strengthening Connections

The summer holiday break no doubt proved an opportune time for families to connect with each other. Connection can look different from family to family and holidays allow you to try lots of new or different activities together. Whether it’s playing cards or board games, swimming or playing beach games, going for bushwalks or helping out around the house—these opportunities to spend more time together as a family are what makes the summer holiday break so special.

As well as enjoying beach time on the NSW South Coast, Mr Tim Naughton’s family enjoyed the summer holiday break and time to read together. Shared reading experiences foster positive attitudes towards reading and enrich our students’ vocabulary. Children’s punctuation, fluency and oral reading skills are also enhanced through regular shared reading with their family. We look forward to Mr Naughton sharing his holiday reading experiences with our Junior School students.

As we welcome students back, the focus will be on connection. Re-connecting with peers and friends forms an important part of the first week of each new year. Welcoming our new students and getting to know your new teacher are also focal points at the start of Term 1.

All our staff can’t wait to see the smiling faces of students in their summer uniform on Day 1. In Term 1, students wear their full summer uniform, including their blazer to and from school and they must bring their Haileybury sun hat and water bottle each day. Now is a good time to try on uniforms and to check that everything is ready. Please also ensure your child applies sunscreen before school when the UV level is 3 and above.

Junior School Parent Information Night

We look forward to seeing our Junior School families at our upcoming Information Night on Thursday, 3 February. During the Zoom session you will hear about our Academic Program and pastoral care, as well as our ‘Care, Learn, Play’ philosophy.

There is a lot to look forward to in Junior School. We hope families have enjoyed the holidays as we prepare to come together once more to Care, Learn and Play.

Middle School

Welcome to the Middle School

A very warm welcome back to our returning families in Middle School (MS) and also to new families joining us in 2022. The start of the year and the holiday period may have looked a little different to what we originally imagined, however, we are very much looking forward to an exciting and busy term ahead.

Induction Days

To ensure that students are well equipped and prepared for the year ahead, all students in Middle School take part in two Induction Days at the beginning of the academic year. This is an opportunity for new students to collect and become familiar with their devices and for current students to learn about new programs and resources for 2022.

All Middle School students also participate in Camp briefings to prepare them for their outdoor experience and to engage in a series of workshops based on respectful relationships.

We’d like to remind families of our 2022 Camp dates:

Setting Goals for 2022

The start of the year brings a wonderful sense of renewed enthusiasm and the chance to set new goals. As the school year starts, please remember that:

  • Academic rigour is important. Set goals for your learning and commit to working hard to achieve them. There are many people who will support you, including your parents and family.

  • Be curious about the world around you. Ask questions and interrogate answers. Approach opportunity with a gung-ho attitude and a growth mindset. This is your year to try something new and when the going gets tough, know that you are resilient and capable. With an open mind, you will achieve great things.

  • Treating others with kindness will make your world a better place—that is a responsibility of being a member of our Haileybury community.

  • Smile and find joy in what you do because there is no greater reward.

MS Parent Information Evening

Parents are invited to attend our MS Parent Information Evening on Zoom on Thursday, 3 February at 6.30 pm. This will be an opportunity to meet your student’s Homeroom Teacher for 2022 and hear important information from the Heads of Middle School and other School leaders. Please put this date in your diary and stay tuned for further information on the myHaileybury app.
