Athletes Excel at State Championships

Over the last two weekends, sixteen Haileybury athletes and seven Old Haileyburians excelled on the athletics stage. Competing in a range of events, they made 40 finals and took home nine gold, five silver, and nine bronze medals.

There were many multiple medallists in our junior ranks. Matty Milias (Year 7) won three gold, one silver and a bronze medal and dominated the Boys U14 age group. Jaz Firth (Year 8) made multiple finals and won a gold, silver and bronze medal in a range of events in the Girls U15 group. Julia Zaitseva (Year 7) also won silver medals in the Girls U15 100m and 200m and made finals in two hurdle events.

Most athletes who competed will represent Victoria at the National Championships in Sydney at the end of the month. Amy Bunnage (OH 2021) and Mia Scerri (Year 12) will be looking to qualify for World Junior Championships.

We wish all athletes the best of luck in their preparation and competition. We look forward to sharing news of their future successes.

Mikey’s Off and Racing

Mikey Hobart (Year 10) regularly races his mountain bike in the U19 State Enduro class competition. This is an extremely demanding discipline that requires riders to complete up to seven timed runs in a day. Mikey recently competed at Falls Creek where he performed very well against riders with much more experience than him. We wish him all the very best.

State Hockey Selection for Oliver

Oliver Thompson (Year 11) has been selected to join the U18 Victorian Hockey Team and will compete at the 2022 Australian Under 18 Hockey Championships in Cairns in April. Oliver is looking forward to the challenge of balancing his studies and training. We wish him all the best.

Will Becomes a Rugby Rebel

After four weeks of selection trials and games—and after scoring three tries in the final trial game—Will Toohey (Year 11) has been selected as wing/fullback member of the 2022 U18 Junior Academy Rebels Training Squad. It’s a wonderful accomplishment and an opportunity to play alongside the very best players in the state.
