GENERAL NEWS
With Semester 2 now underway for the Middle School, and Interim Reports becoming
available for Middle School students on Thursday, 18 June, and Junior School
students on Friday, 19 June, this is an important time to take stock. Edrington moves into an interruption-free week
for all students from Tuesday, 9 June. These
interruption-free weeks are crucial to the success of Haileybury's academic
program as they provide the teachers with a defined block of time when they
know there are no co-curricular events that will take their students out of
normal classes. Haileybury's teaching
staff, Homeroom teachers and Heads of School have been carefully reviewing your
child/children's Semester 1 results over the past few weeks. I would encourage you to do likewise once
reports are released and contact your son or daughter's teachers if you have
any concerns.
In the final week of Term 2, Edrington will hold its biannual Whole
School Assembly, which will see all Junior School and Middle School students come
together to celebrate the achievements of Edrington students throughout
Semester 1. The assembly will run during
the final session of the day on Friday, 19 June. If parents are available to attend, you are
more than welcome to come along. The
assembly will be held in John Twist Hall from 2.00 pm until the conclusion of
the School day.
EARLY
LEARNING CENTRE
Social
Justice Event – PJ Breakfast
Haileybury Junior School and Middle School students
have a long and proud history of involvement in Social Justice projects. The Early Learning Centre students are also
encouraged to participate in this element of the Haileybury program each
year. For 2015, ELC educators have decided
to support an organisation called SecondBite.
SecondBite redistributes surplus fresh food
to community food programs, which support families in our community who need
support. To tie in with this Social Justice
event, the ELC students are invited to come to School in their PJs for a
special breakfast on Tuesday, 16 June.
Children's wellbeing will also be explored on this day as we have a
range of extra-curricular activities planned.
A local dentist has kindly offered to visit us to discuss oral hygiene
and the importance of good food for children's bodies and teeth. In addition to this, we have a fitness session
planned for the afternoon. We thank
families in advance for supporting these initiatives.
Always
Striving
As part of the ELC Quality Improvement Plan, we
would like to encourage parents to provide us with feedback on our programs. Please feel free to use the feedback cards in
the ELC foyer or to contact staff directly regarding any suggestions you may
have to improve our centre, or to provide comments about what you like about
the Edrington ELC. The level of parent
participation was commented on favourably within our recent National Quality
Assessment and this is certainly something we wish to continue.
JUNIOR
SCHOOL
Everyday Hero
Last Thursday
was filled with colour as the Junior School dressed up as superheroes to
celebrate our Social Justice Day. We
asked students to reflect on those children in our community who have been
diagnosed with cancer and how we, as a community, can be their 'heroes'. The students were asked to attain a series of
sponsors and then complete a set of challenges, which required them to
demonstrate their persistence and grit to complete all activities. If all students could collect and then return
their sponsor's donations to School by Friday, 12 June, it would be greatly
appreciated.
House Sport
To further
embrace House spirit, we will be holding a Junior School House Sport afternoon
on Friday, 12 June, in place of our assembly.
Students will be in multi-age group teams led by our Year 4 House
Captains. All students will need to
bring their sports uniform to School for the afternoon.
Term 2 Junior School Presentation Assembly
On the last day
of Term 2, Junior School students will be involved in our End-of-Term Assembly. We will celebrate our achievements and share
highlights at each year level. Nominated
students will also be presented with awards to acknowledge their outstanding
contribution to the Junior School throughout the term. Parents are invited to attend this assembly
at 8.45 am in John Twist Hall.
MIDDLE
SCHOOL
Middle
School students have shown their continued commitment to our Social Justice
initiatives by raising over $1,200 on Social Justice Day. The charities that will receive the benefits
of this hard work are One Girl and Beyond Blue.
The excellent presentations from our Social Justice Captains, Stephanie Meade, Chaya Quinn, Liam Sheehan
and Vineth Jayasuriya Arachch,
ensured that our focus remains on education, awareness and understanding, while
raising these much needed funds.
Our Year
8 students followed this by spending time in the main street of Berwick,
raising money for the Salvation Army's Red Shield Appeal. Haileybury has been supporting the Salvation
Army for eight years and over this time has raised in excess of $7,000.
Congratulations
to all musicians who displayed their musical talent and prowess, entertaining
many at the Berwick Concert last night.
Music is an integral component of our program and provides many
opportunities for our students to shine.
Congratulations to Music Captains Caitlin
De Silva and Jesse Laughlin-Jones
for the outstanding manner in which they hosted this event.
The Girls
and Boys Middle School will hold separate assemblies on Friday, 12 June. Year 7 boys and girls will host the
assemblies, reflecting on the busy semester and celebrating the many
achievements of the students within each School. Finally, on Friday, 19June, all
Middle School students will travel to Keysborough for an end-of-semester Chapel
Service.
