Haileybury celebrated National Reconciliation Week, hosting an Indigenous AFL Round with Melbourne Grammar School on Saturday, 30 May 2015.
National Reconciliation Week signifies the anniversary of the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision. To mark this occasion, special guests Mr. Allan Murray, Aboriginal Affairs Advisor to the Minister of Indigenous Affairs and Aboriginal Elder, Mr. Tony Garvey we invited along to help with proceedings.
Mr. Murray, gave an inspiring 'Welcome to Country,' a ceremony performed by a local Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander representative to welcome visitors to their traditional land. Aboriginal Elder, Mr. Garvey then commenced his opening speech by inviting Principal Derek Scott to give each team member a token of the land, in the form of an Australian gum leaf.
Whilst Melbourne Grammar went on to defeat Haileybury and end their winning streak, the spirit of the game was not lost on either team.
Congratulations to both schools on their involvement.
