General: Prof Whitwell has had a long career in senior leadership roles in some of Australia’s most pre-eminent universities. Prof Whitwell has a lifelong commitment to the transformative power of education through innovative and engaging teaching methods and through research aimed at better understanding how economies function. Prof Whitwell advocates the importance of interdisciplinary study and incorporates multiple perspectives on societal challenges. Prof Whitwell has long been a champion of diversity, equity and inclusivity.

Academic: Prof Whitwell graduated from Monash University with a Bachelor of Economics Degree (first class honours, top of class in economic history) and a PhD from The University of Melbourne. He is a recipient of the Academy of the Social Science in Australia Medal for Scholarship.

Career and professional activities: Prior to Prof Whitwell’s retirement at the end of 2022, he was Dean of the University of Sydney Business School. He was also Chair of CEMS, a global alliance of leading business schools, multinational companies and NGOs. Prior positions included Senior Deputy Dean at UNSW Business School and Deputy Dean and Director of the Graduate School, Faculty of Business and Economics at The University of Melbourne.

Board experience: During his term at the University of Sydney, Prof Whitwell was a non-executive director of Xi Su Commercial Consulting Company Ltd and a non-executive director of A14 Holdings Pty Ltd. Prof Whitwell was also on the AACSB International Board of Directors and AACSB’s Asia Pacific Advisory Council. During his term at UNSW, Prof Whitwell was a member of AIESEC’s National Board of Advisors. During his time at The University of Melbourne, Prof Whitwell was Chair of the Academic Senate of U21 Global, Chair of the Board of Management of the University of Melbourne Bookshop, and an inaugural member of the Universidad de los Andes PhD International Advisory Board.

Connection to Haileybury: Prof Whitwell attended Haileybury Keysborough for his secondary education. He was Head Boy of the Middle School, a Prefect and Captain of Sholto Black.

Values: Prof Whitwell believes you must follow your passions, but always act with integrity and humility and treat others with respect and empathy. He thinks that you should always challenge the status quo, not just for the sake of being critical but to see if there is not a better way of doing things. He believes that creativity and a willingness to try new things and embrace multiple perspectives should be encouraged in every student.
