Haileybury was once again recognised as one of the very best schools in Australia when News Corp produced their rankings of Australian Primary Schools last week.
There are just under 10,000 schools in Australia and Haileybury was ranked fourth of all primary schools in Australia and second in Victoria.
This followed on from last year’s rankings which saw Haileybury ranked as the number one co-education secondary school in Australia and number two of all schools behind Sydney Grammar.
News Corp used 2025 NAPLAN totals across all five domains at Years 3 and 5, student attendance, student teacher ratios and incorporated measures from the Index of Community Socio-Educational Advantage.
Haileybury strongly believes that developing core skills in literacy and numeracy in the primary school years is fundamental to enable students to move on to develop critical and analytical thinking as they move through their secondary schooling. Deputy Principal (Junior School) Grenville Green has been leading our explicit teaching model for more than a decade.
Grenville was quoted in the Herald Sun. “Within our primary years we embed a culture of high standards and excellence in every aspect of school life. This includes excellence through our evidence-informed academic program, where explicit teaching and quality of learning are at the forefront, but also through having high expectations for how we work together, and by respecting every member of the community.”
Grenville’s work also supports Haileybury Rendall School in Darwin who were the number one ranked primary school in the Northern Territory.
All the schools that ranked highly had strong attendance rates. Haileybury Melbourne has 94% average attendance across the year and 84% of students attend 90% or more of the time. I would like to work with families to see this last figure improve. With Haileybury’s highly focused, evidence-based approach and brilliant teachers we know and can demonstrate that high levels of attendance correlate with strong academic performance.
I congratulate Haileybury’s teachers and the whole community for the outstanding outcomes achieved. We have received the first set of school data for NAPLAN 2026, and I am pleased that once again it will see Haileybury’s students performing in literacy and numeracy amongst the very best in the country.
