Excited and Ready

Happy New Year. I extend a warm welcome to the entire Newlands community as Term 1 begins. We are looking forward to our students returning on Thursday, 27 January. We are excited about classes and events proceeding and, of course, all protocols for keeping our community safe will be strictly adhered to.

We will keep you up to date via the whole-school myHaileybury app and with notices from Vice-Principal Mr Scott Doran and myself. All information for parents from the School is sent via myHaileybury, so please ensure it is installed and that you can access information. The myHaileybury user guide is below.

myHaileybury app

Please ensure you have downloaded the myHaileybury app before the term begins. This is our main communication tool and provides updates on events, year level notices and calendar information from the School. All student absences must also be notified to the School through the myHaileybury app > Absent/Late.

Medical Information

It is very important that all medical information about your child is updated regularly.

Consent2Go allows parents/guardians and the School to accurately and securely record health information about students. It can also be used for online excursion approvals, risk management and online permissions for school activities.

This can be accessed via myHaileybury app > myPortal > update myDetails. If you cannot login to the myHaileybury app or require technical assistance, please email servicecentral@haileybury.vic.edu.au.

Early Learning Centre

An Exciting Start

Our educators are delighted to welcome each child to the Early Learning Centre (ELC) and some quality interaction time has ensured that children have settled into their new learning environment. During the first weeks of term, the children are given opportunities to explore their play environments and begin to share their interest areas. The focus is on developing a sense of connection and belonging to their new classroom, classmates and educators.

Early Childhood Language

This year, Newlands ELC is one of the few Victorian early childhood services to receive funding from the Department of Education and Training for a Chinese Language Program for Pre-Prep children.

Mrs Silvia Wang, a qualified kindergarten teacher, will deliver the program which allows for three hours of Mandarin language teaching embedded in our daily program. The introduction of Mandarin in Pre-Prep exposes children to the language that will be part of their weekly program in the Junior School.

Parent Information Evening

ELC parents are invited to attend the ELC/Junior School Information Night on Tuesday, 31 January, from 6.00 – 7.00 pm. Lead educators will discuss the ELC curriculum, clarify day-to-day procedures in the classroom and will answer any questions from parents. Details will be communicated via myHaileybury closer to the date.

Junior School

Summer Uniform

During Term 1, students should wear their summer uniform as indicated on the myHaileybury app under ‘Uniform’. During recess and lunch outside, Junior School students must wear a Haileybury sun hat.

ELC and Junior School Information Evening

Our 2022 ELC and Junior School Information Evening will be held on Monday, 31 January from 6.00 – 7.00 pm. Information will be sent via myHaileybury.

The evening provides detailed information about the Junior School Program and is an opportunity for parents to find out specific information relevant to their child’s year level and class. Following the initial introduction, parents will move to the ELC and allocated Junior School classrooms.

Meet and Greet

Junior School teachers look forward to meeting you at our Parent–Teacher Interviews on Wednesday, 9 February. Like last year, these will be conducted via Zoom. The ‘meet and greet’-style meetings are an ideal opportunity for teachers and parents to share important information about their child early in the school year. Families will receive a link to make a booking via myHaileybury.

Australian Education Awards Success

The Australian Education Awards were announced at the end of 2021. Once again, Haileybury was recognised as Australia’s Primary School of the Year – Non-Government. This recognises the collaboration between Haileybury students, teachers and families during the many challenges created by COVID-19.

While this award acknowledges our great School, the most rewarding aspect of 2020 and 2021 was seeing students, staff and the whole Haileybury community come together for the benefit of our students.

Thank you for all your efforts and we look forward to exciting opportunities in 2022.

Middle School

Welcome Back Students

A very big welcome to our new students in Years 5, 6 and 7. We hope you enjoy your experience at Haileybury and that you make the most of the opportunities on offer to you all.

A great deal of support is available to meet the academic and pastoral needs of Middle School students. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to your Homeroom Teacher if you have questions.

In 2022, we are adding a fourth Year 7 class to the Girls Middle School family—7D—and we are thrilled that Miss Sophie Elliot will be the Homeroom Teacher.

Newlands Transition Program

The first two days of school will be slightly different as students will be involved in the Newlands Transition Program. This will include extended homeroom sessions to help build classroom connections and sessions to introduce our Digital Learning platforms and to set expectations for ICT use and academic requirements. There will also be sessions to help students familiarise themselves with the many choices available at Haileybury.

Uniforms and Hats

We take great pride in how our students present themselves and hope you will support this by ensuring that your child wears the correct uniform at all times. The full summer uniform is recommended during Term 1 and blazers are to be worn to and from school.

Some allowances are made on extreme weather days and these will be communicated to students.

During Terms 1 and 4, all students must also wear a Haileybury hat at recess and lunchtime to protect them from the sun.
