Foster critical skills and an understanding of aesthetics

Haileybury's Visual Arts Department is a dynamic learning community committed to enriching students' educational experiences through cultivating their creativity, self-expression, critical thinking, project management, and problem-solving skills to develop the foundation of a life rich with cultural understanding and contribution. Studying art, design and media encourages young people to communicate in a variety of ways using their unique voice, develops practical skills and knowledge that are valuable in many fields, and provides students with an opportunity to engage with cultural and societal issues through by gaining understanding of different perspectives and ways of thinking to broaden their knowledge and appreciation of different cultures.

Our exceptional Visual Arts program offers four subjects - Art Making and Exhibiting, Media, Product Design and Technology, and Visual Communication Design - for Senior School students in Year 9 to VCE. These subjects offer a unique opportunity for students to develop skills that are highly valued by universities and the job market. Our program focuses on nurturing the ability to think creatively and communicate visually - qualities that employers are looking for in graduates. By undertaking long-term folio-based work, students in our program develop essential skills such as project management, critical thinking, problem-solving, and self-expression. These skills are fundamental for success in the workplace. In addition, universities are seeking graduates who have completed creative subjects at VCE level, as these subjects provide students with unique skills and perspectives that are highly valuable in a range of fields.

Creative subjects allow students to develop their capacity for innovation, collaborate effectively, and present their ideas with confidence. These transferable skills can be applied in a range of industries, from design and media to marketing and advertising. Our Visual Arts program also offers students the opportunity to work alongside professionals in the creative industries through partnerships with industry organizations, such as the Victorian Artists Society and the artist in residence program. These partnerships provide students with valuable insights into the world of art and design, as well as opportunities for work experience and mentorship. Students who participate in our program can look forward to exciting career opportunities in a range of fields, as well as the chance to develop a lifelong love for art and design.
