A core element of the Haileybury experience is fostering an international outlook in every student. This is achieved through the deliberate development of global competence from the Early Learning Centre through to the Senior School.
Global competence is about helping students to look beyond the ‘school bubble’ and develop the knowledge, skills and respect for other cultures that enable them to travel, work and live anywhere in the world.
The activities offered at Haileybury are based on the School’s extensive and decades-long global experience and expertise, and on rigorous worldwide research conducted by Global Competence Associates, which resulted in the Global Competence Model™. Importantly, this model informs Haileybury’s focus on both the ‘internal readiness’ (self-awareness and disposition) of our students, as well as their ‘external readiness’ (skills and knowledge), which fosters global preparedness.
Early Learning Centre (ELC)
In the ELC, children learn about Australia’s neighbours in the Indo-Pacific through the Travelling Teddy and Culture in a Box exchanges. Our ELCs also actively learn about festivals such as Diwali, Ramadan and Lunar New Year, celebrating our diverse Haileybury community.
Junior School
In the Junior School, students undertake a specialist subject called “Languages and Cultures.” As part of this curriculum, students explore the linguistic and cultural diversity of the school community and beyond and participate in the International Buddy Class Project, through which they gain insight into the lives and cultures of primary school children from Asia to the Americas. To date, Haileybury has partnered with schools in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste, Mexico, Ecuador, Argentina and Chile.
Middle School
The Middle School years present students with expanded opportunities to become globally competent. Compulsory Languages programs facilitate international connections with partner schools in China, Japan and France, and Year 8 students are provided the opportunity to embark on an overseas Language trip to enrich their skills and cultural knowledge. Middle School students also engage with International News of the Week through Home Room and opportunities such as the International Book Club.
Senior School
Haileybury’s unique Pre-Senior Program sees Year 9 students undertake two Explore and Expedition trips, during which students are challenged to push their boundaries through a range of travel – both domestic and international. An international outlook is inculcated across the Pre-Senior Program through a process of preparatory research, experiential learning and reflection, which are paired with all Explore and Expedition travel.
As students grow closer to graduating from Haileybury, the Senior School offers tailored opportunities to develop global capabilities. The International Outlook Club focuses on equipping students with intercultural communication skills by connecting with peers around the Asia-Pacific region. Students also have the opportunity to engage in international competition through participation in Chinese Debating, Model United Nations, and Linguistics Club.
The Senior School community is enriched by annual visits and cultural exchanges with our sister schools in Japan, France and China, which also sees many of our Languages students complete enrichment programs overseas. Haileybury also offers opportunities to participate in prestigious exchange programs with Haileybury UK, including the Haileybury Organ Scholar and General Excellence Scholar.
A global mindset is not a luxury, it is a competitive advantage.
Today’s young people will live in a world with very different cultural, economic and professional boundaries and interactions. Future employers in every industry seek graduates who can work confidently across different countries and cultures; they want young people who think beyond their own lived experience and can challenge and disrupt assumptions and stereotypes.
Cultivating an international outlook is therefore a pillar of the Haileybury experience that ensures our students succeed, no matter where they are in the world.
