Holistic student wellbeing and School sport – hand-in-hand

At Haileybury, we believe that genuine holistic wellbeing sits at the heart of a flourishing School community.

We nurture students’ wellbeing through our work in classrooms, specific targeted programs and through the quality of our respectful, positive relationships. This is our culture and it’s strong.

We also nurture students’ wellbeing through the many different vibrant experiences that bring our students together. One of the most powerful expressions of this is our commitment to APS/AGSV School sport, a feature of Haileybury life that inspires connection, joy and personal growth in our students.

Participation in APS/AGSV School sport offers far more than competition. Our sports program provides students with a space to belong, to challenge themselves and to experience the satisfaction of contributing to a team. Sports is of course about physical health, and it’s also about relationships, contribution, leadership and community.

Whether on the field, court, track, dance studio, or in the pool, the participation of students in our School sport programs help to build confidence and resilience - qualities that are fundamental to their overall wellbeing.

The feeling that comes from striving alongside peers, the discipline of regular training, and the pride of representing Haileybury all contribute to a deep sense of purpose and identity.

Here at Haileybury, we encourage our students to participate in sport in a way that’s right for them. Some students are striving for elite future pathways, others play to be with their friends; some are focused on holistic wellness, others may still be ‘finding their thing’. All different sporting abilities and interests matter to us – every student matters every day.

Why does sport matter so much for our wellbeing?

  • Physically, sport promotes fitness, strength and healthy habits that often last a lifetime.
  • Mentally, sports can provide an outlet for managing stress, improving focus and fostering a positive mindset.
  • Emotionally, sport can help students navigate both success and disappointment, teaching both resilience and self-reflection.
  • Socially, sport can build lasting friendships and strengthen connections across year levels, our campuses and the broader Haileybury community.

The joy of APS/AGSV sport is also found in our shared experiences. Early morning trainings, Saturday games, spirited sideline support and the traditions that accompany competition all contribute to a sense of unity and School pride.

These moments create memories that will often stay with students long after their time at School has ended. They remind us that sport is not just about outcomes, but about the journey and the relationships formed along the way.

It is important to remember that participation at all levels is what truly matters.

Each student who steps forward to represent Haileybury, whether in a First Team Blazer Team or a development squad, is contributing to something larger than themselves. When students participate, they strengthen their own wellbeing and the collective wellbeing of our School.

I encourage all families to positively support your children’s involvement in APS/AGSV sport. It is a commitment we make at Haileybury, and your encouragement, presence and partnership play such an important role in helping students embrace the opportunities that sport offers.

Together, we can ensure that your child, and every student, feels empowered to engage, to grow and to thrive.

At Haileybury, School sport is not an optional extra. It is an integral and valued part of School life. It reflects our commitment to developing well-rounded young people who are healthy, connected and resilient.

The power and joy of APS/AGSV sport remind us that wellbeing is not something experienced in isolation. We nurture students’ wellbeing in a range of important ways at Haileybury, and School sport is a key part of our shared work.

As the winter season progresses, I look forward to seeing our students continue to compete with integrity, support each other with positive team spirit and experience the joy of the opportunity to represent Haileybury.
