Experiential Learning

Haileybury’s entire Pre-Senior cohort have spent the final two weeks of term engaged in a range of experiential learning activities at various locations around Australia and the world more broadly. Our students from Haileybury College will complete their Expeditions which are designed to be challenging from a physical, emotional and intellectual perspective. It is this level of challenge that encourages growth within our students and the ability for them to develop their personal skills, leadership skills and resilience. The Haileybury Girls College students will be out on Explore. The Explore program centres around students selecting an area of interest they wish to explore and learn more about. The Explore programs are each uniquely different and offer an experience that we believe will create a memory they will treasure for life as well as having a lasting impact on them.

Pre-Senior Term 3 update

It has been an exciting few weeks for Haileybury Pre-Seniors. On Tuesday, 19 August, all 500 Pre-Senior students came together at the Brighton campus for a vibrant day of connection and celebration. Students reunited with friends from their June Explore and Expedition programs and looked ahead to their September adventures, strengthening bonds across our One School community. Over the past fortnight, Pre-Senior students have also demonstrated their commitment to social justice, with the Brighton SRC raising almost $1,000 for Pets of the Homeless and the Keysborough Social Justice team organising a beach clean-up at Aspendale, while also fundraising to create care packages for Vinnies. Our students have been out across Victoria, Australia and around the world on their September Explore and Expedition programs. These experiences, deeply embedded in Haileybury’s values of social justice, cultural awareness and community, provide unforgettable opportunities for adventure and growth, while strengthening the peer networks that make our Pre-Senior program so special.

Cuddihy House

What an incredible morning it was at the Brighton Beach Marathon. As the sun rose over the shoreline, our community came together for a day that left everyone beaming with pride and energy. The event was a powerful reminder of just how amazing things can be when we unite for a common cause.

Despite the brisk start to the day, the atmosphere was warm with laughter and encouragement. From runners braving the course to supporters on the sidelines, every single person brought enthusiasm and heart. The camaraderie was palpable as friends old and new cheered each other on, shared high-fives, and celebrated every milestone along the way.

Our collective effort truly paid off, smashing our fundraising goal for Breast Cancer Trials. Thanks to the generosity and spirit of everyone involved, we have raised an incredible $6,270 so far. This achievement will make a real difference in the ongoing fight against breast cancer and is a testament to what we can achieve together.

But the Brighton Beach Marathon was about more than just the run. It was about friendship, encouragement, and having a great time while supporting a cause that touches so many lives. Whether you were lacing up your runners, handing out bibs, or simply cheering from the sidelines, you played a part in making the day special.

Thank you to everyone who participated, volunteered, donated, and supported the event. This is what happens when great people come together for a great cause. Here’s to many more inspiring mornings like this one.

French Exchange program

The journey began in December 2024 when two groups of students embarked on a linguistic and cultural exchange in Bordeaux and Aix-en-Provence. Strong connections were formed with their host families, and regular lessons with their VCE French teachers, alongside mainstream classes, provided a solid foundation for improving their language skills. The excursion program was diverse and immersive, featuring museum visits where students could interact with the artwork, exploring Christmas markets and iconic landmarks, and enjoying meals at renowned local restaurants.

“Going to France in Aix-en-Provence, in one of our sister schools has been a dream come true. It has also been an incredible experience for the other group who went to Bordeaux, our other sister school.

“From the first day, it seemed like being in France would be a daunting challenge, but over the weeks I have gained confidence in my French and felt more comfortable speaking and listening to it, especially with my host family. They were the sweetest family, and they looked after me so well. They made me feel at home and completely a part of their family.

Seeing the differences between Australia and France has been interesting.

“The daily lessons held by Madame Fugier-Sola and Monsieur Sola were fabulous. The excursions that we went on with them were very fun and interesting.

“The food we ate was different and delicious. My host family cooked the most amazing dishes. This experience has really been an eye opener and has set me up well for Units 3 and 4, but also for life.”

French Exchange students:

In Term 3 of 2025, the French correspondents from Bordeaux visited Haileybury, where they experienced the warm hospitality of our host families. They engaged in various incursions and excursions, and enjoyed a full immersion in the English language and Australian culture.

“My name is Cooper , I am studying Units 1 and 2 French in Year 11 currently and have been given the incredible opportunity to be selected for the French exchange program. I recently finished hosting my exchange student, Théo, from L’Assomption Sainte Clotilde school in Bordeaux, who stayed with us for three weeks. During these past three weeks I have found that not only has my French ability drastically increased by being able to speak with a native speaker, but also my knowledge of the country and culture within France, which has unlocked a whole new part of the language that I hadn’t even considered before. Not only that, but the friendships and connections I have made with Théo and the other French exchange students and hosts will be something I can cherish for the rest of my life. Théo had so much fun experiencing Melbourne and an Australian school with me, as did I in hosting him. In December, me and all the other Haileybury students involved in the French exchange program will visit Bordeaux to stay with our hosts for five weeks over the Christmas break with our head of French, Madame Fugier-Sola, which I am so excited to do, and I get to continue my experience of indulging myself in the French language, culture and making more overseas friends and memories. I highly encourage anyone planning on studying and learning French for VCE to consider applying for the exchange program, as you will learn and make so many lifelong memories and friends that you can take with you wherever you go in life.”

Term 4 logistics

While the September break offers some time for Senior School students to relax and unwind it is also an important time for revision and preparation. Haileybury academic staff will run a series of revision activities for Units 3 and 4 studies throughout the September school holidays. While attendance at these sessions is not compulsory, families may want to take this into account when planning holidays. A timetable which details the times for these revision lectures will be made available to students through myHaileybury.

Summer uniform

Summer uniform may be worn in Term 4, 1A and 2.  No scarves permitted.

Year 12s are required to wear full winter uniform for Graduation.

Last day of school – Year 12

Friday, 17 October will be the last day when all our Year 12 students are at school together. Berwick, Brighton and City students will all travel to Keysborough to participate in the final Whole School Assembly.

Graduation Ceremonies

It is Haileybury tradition that our Year 12 cohorts have separate final day celebrations along with individual graduation ceremonies and valedictory dinners. Our Haileybury College Year 12 students graduate on Monday, 20 October, so all Haileybury College students from Years 10–12 will go to Keysborough on that day (there are no Haileybury Girls College Years 10–12 students at school that day). Our Haileybury Girls College Year 12 students graduate on Tuesday, 21 October, so all Haileybury Girls College students from Years 10–12 will go to Keysborough on that day (there are no Haileybury College Years 10–12 students at school that day).

Exams and new academic year

Following these celebratory days, all students will move into internal Haileybury examination periods or preparations for Units 3 and 4 VCE examinations.

Term 1A (new academic year) will begin on Monday, 17 November with all students starting their 2026 academic program.

Tertiary pathways information for Years 9 and 10 students

As students move into the VCE years both students and their families often have questions about how their academic pathways at Haileybury match up against university pre-requisites in the coming years. In the past, each Year 10 student has received a copy of a VTAC Year 10 Guide to help with this planning. VTAC has now moved all information contained within this guide to their website. This website contains information about VCE subject selection, scaling of VCE study scores and a section called prerequisite and course explorer which provides information on tertiary entry requirements for students who will enter universities or other tertiary institutions. While Haileybury will continue to provide both students and parents with information about subject selection and university entrance throughout the next three years, this guide is an effective way for Years 9 and 10 families to familiarise themselves with the jargon associated with the VCE and tertiary entrance.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Australia

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is a youth development program run by Haileybury that empowers young people to expand their horizons and provides them with new opportunities. Throughout the program, students develop their resilience, creativity, courage and independence. This year, four students have achieved the remarkable Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award, which requires at least 52 weeks of skills development, physical recreation and voluntary work.

We are delighted to recognise the outstanding achievements of Hamish and Ronit , who have both successfully completed the prestigious gold level of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. This accomplishment reflects their dedication, resilience, and commitment to personal growth.

A special mention goes to Hamish , who has completed all three levels of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award — bronze, silver and gold. This is a remarkable achievement that demonstrates sustained effort and an ongoing willingness to challenge himself over several years.

Well done to both Hamish and Ronit on this significant milestone. Your school community is incredibly proud of your hard work and determination.
