From ELC to Year 12, International Outlook is woven through every part of a Haileybury education.
By learning a new language, embracing cultural exchanges, and participating in global youth forums and expeditions, our students develop empathy, adaptability and the confidence to engage with the world beyond our gates.
Our innovative approach to language education and global experiences helps Haileybury students grow into responsible, respectful and globally minded citizens.
In ELC, our youngest students celebrate the cultural diversity within their own classrooms and school community by immersing themselves in cultural festivities such as Diwali and the Lunar New Year. These joyful celebrations help children appreciate that our differences are what makes us stronger, and that kindness, curiosity and respect are truly universal.
The Languages and Cultures specialist subject sparks curiosity about how languages work and celebrates the fascinating cultures within our school community and beyond. Students build global connections through creative class projects that match them with a buddy class in another country, helping each student to realise they are part of a much bigger world.
From Year 5, Languages becomes a core part of each student’s academic journey, opening doors to language and cultural exchanges with partner schools in Mauritius, France, China and Japan.
Students represent Haileybury in global youth forums and international events, such as the World Scholars Cup that brings together young people from 60 countries, and the Ethics Olympiad which encourages students from many nations to brainstorm ethical global issues. Our annual Languages and Cultures Week also celebrates the many benefits of learning a new language and discovering new cultures.
In Year 9, Haileybury’s Explore and Expeditions Program takes learning across borders by combining language study with purposefully-designed, immersive cultural experiences.
Each trip includes a social justice component. Social justice is one of Haileybury’s core pillars and whether young people witness homelessness or the impacts of climate change on a country’s fragile ecosystem, students are encouraged to reflect and to challenge assumptions and biases as they step outside their comfort zone.
From Year 10, students can join our International Outlook Club which hosts international visitors, represents Haileybury at global youth forums and leads activities for younger students during Languages and Cultures Week. Students become International Outlook ambassadors and continue to develop global competence and leadership skills.
Our Senior School students can study a language at VCE and become part of our successful International Debating Society – competing in Chinese and English. Some students travel to Haileybury UK on exchange, join language immersion and co-curricular trips abroad and host visiting students from our partner schools.
Looking beyond Haileybury, our experienced Careers Counsellors guide and support students who aim to continue their education at international universities in the US, UK and many other countries.
Today’s young people will live in a world with very different cultural, economic and professional boundaries and interactions. Our intentional and research-based International Outlook program prepares them for success in this changing world, delivering much more than essential language skills.
Future employers in every industry seek graduates who can work confidently across different countries and cultures. They want young people who think beyond their own lived experience and who can challenge and disrupt assumptions and stereotypes. They want young minds that can analyse issues from multiple angles, think critically and problem-solve.
A global mindset is not a luxury – it is a competitive advantage.
International Outlook at Haileybury fosters that global mindset that ensures Haileybury’s students succeed no matter where they are in the world.
