How glorious it was to see Haileybury students participating in a full round of sports and physical activities last week.
More than 2,800 Haileybury students took the opportunity to participate in the 19 sports activities on offer and there were smiles all round as the energy and enthusiasm that physical activities bring took hold.
Haileybury makes a huge commitment to the sports activity program, knowing that it makes a significant difference to the health and wellbeing of our young people. Collaboration, teamwork and, of course, learning to win with humility and to lose with grace are all important skills that are learnt from the program.
I’d like to particularly express my appreciation to the Haileybury teaching staff involved in the program—283 staff members were out on the weekend ensuring that students enjoyed their activities and there were an impressive 175 teams representing the School.
We are also fortunate to be part of two very fine school sport organisations—the Associated Public Schools (APS) and Associated Grammar Schools of Victoria (AGSV). Most of our sports are played in the APS/AGSV combined competition for girls and in the APS competition for boys.
We are committed to continuing to expand our sport options for students so that every student has an activity that they can enjoy.
I note also the extraordinary commitment of parents to support the activities of your daughters and sons.
The outcome of this great collaboration between the School, students, staff and families is better physical and mental health for our students.

An Excellent Start
Our new school year began brilliantly on Day 1 with parents and students entering the school grounds with excitement and nervousness. Just over a week later, the students are still smiling and have settled into the routines and rigours of our academic program.
Information Sessions
Information sessions have been conducted across the schools, giving our parents the opportunity to meet the Heads of Schools, Homeroom Teachers and Lead Educators. Many questions were asked and answered and we appreciate the partnership we have with our families.
Knowing Your Child
On Wednesday, 2 February, and Thursday, 3 February, students from Years 1–8 participated in ACER testing. These internal assessments give us a benchmark for where your child sits across certain elements of their learning and we use this data to ensure we provide challenges and support in the areas where children most need this.
Our Parent Teacher Interviews have given us a further opportunity to know your child. Thank you for sharing your important insights about your child with us.
Parking
At times, parking around the School is difficult. Our priority is the safety and wellbeing of our Haileybury community. When parents leave via the South Road exit, please take care turning onto South Road as the pedestrian crossing is so close to the exit.
Remember that all exits from the School to Villeroy and Rouen Streets close at 6.00 pm. If you are attending an evening function, we encourage you to park on South Road and enter through the front gate.
There are clearly signed 2-minute parking spaces outside the Villeroy Street gate and this is to be used as a ‘kiss and go’ zone, rather than parents leaving their car.
Please be considerate of the residents in the streets surrounding our School.
Early Learning Centre
A Joyful Beginning
There has been a mix of emotions as students start a new year in the Early Learning Centre—anticipation, excitement and joy have all been part of the experience for children, families and educators as we begin a new school year.
During Term One we focus on building relationships and fostering a sense of safety, security and belonging. The children are settling well and getting to know their peers, educators and the learning environments that make up their Haileybury ELC community.
We look forward to many joyful moments as we all embark on a year of learning and development.
Anaphylaxis and Food Allergies
Several children in the ELC have food allergies and are anaphylactic, so we ask that you please be mindful of the foods packed for your child’s morning tea and lunch. If you have any queries about this, please speak with your class educators. It is important that we are aware of any potential risks for effective management and we appreciate your assistance with this important matter.
Communication
We stay connected with families in many ways, including our recent Parent Information Sessions and Parent Teacher Interviews via Zoom. The Haileybury ELC app is an essential regular communication channel, so please ensure you have this and are receiving important updates and precious moments.
Junior School
Our Preps Thrive
Our youngest Junior School students have settled into their new routines quickly and easily. While it takes a little while to build ‘school fitness’, our Preps adapted well to their day. During the course of the first week, all grades attend two PE lessons and an Art, Drama, Music, CDT and Library class with different teachers and in different spaces across the School. It’s amazing to see how our children take on these challenges with such enthusiasm!
Junior School House Captains
We’re super proud of our Year 4 leaders for semester 1. Introducing Clements leaders: Scarlett Cai, Georgia Humphris, Matthew Braun, Nathan Gong, Elena Chen, Eden Collin,
and Evan Yu. Jackson leaders: Abigail Wang-Ward, Myles Thom, Marlowe Tiley, Charlotte Ogilvie, Alison Harris and Evan Li. Kennedy leaders: Mabel Hillier, Emmanuel Gioutlou, Elle Schaeffer, Elizabeth Ren
and Olivia Milani. Russell leaders: Magnus Goulopoulos, Arjan Saraw, Siena Story, Francesca Morley, Charlie Sinclair and Jacob Lloyd.
Some Housekeeping Reminders
If your child’s hair can be tied back, it must be tied back.
No nail polish or jewellery, apart from small religious necklaces, are allowed.
Black sunhats are worn during any outdoor activity in Terms 1 and 4—No hat, no play.
PE uniforms are worn on the two days that your child’s class is timetabled for PE.
Water bottles must be brought to school each day.
Sunscreen should be applied at home each morning. Please put a small personal roll-on in your child’s bag so they can reapply throughout the day.
Middle School
First Day Back
The first day of the school year is one of our favourite days. Nervous excitement is in the air as the school begins to fill with students, staff and families. The school buildings, which have sat empty for the break, return to the core purpose of educating young men and women. Old friendships are re-kindled and new ones begin to form as our students embark on a new year level in a new environment with a new group of students.
Everyone is out of their comfort zone and everyone must dig deep and find a way to move forward and thrive in their unfamiliar environment. As a school, it is our role to welcome and nurture your child while challenging them and finding and presenting opportunities to place them outside their comfort zone and to help them develop life skills to cope with changing demands.
Our Middle Schools have had an amazing start to 2022, beginning with a thorough induction program for Years 5–8. Expectations were outlined, questions answered and the journey has begun …

Welcome Back!
We hope everyone is settling in nicely to the start of Term 1. The HPFC are looking forward to resuming our events with the school community soon.
If you would like to volunteer to be on the HPFC committee, please reach out to me at hpfc.presidentexec@gmail.com.
Our students and families recently celebrated the Chinese New Year (CNY) with the traditional greeting—Kung Hei Fat Choi. The CNY is also called the Lunar New Year or Spring Festival and is the most important celebration in the Chinese Calendar. It marks the first moon of the lunisolar calendars that are regulated by the cycles of the moon and sun and that are traditional to China and many east Asian countries.
CNY was celebrated by visits to family and friends, special meals, fireworks and gifts. In Chinese tradition, each year is named after one of 12 animals that feature in the Chinese zodiac: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. This is the Year of the Tiger.
The Tiger is the third of all the zodiac animals and in ancient Chinese culture, it was valued because of its power, speed, and vigour. Chinese people regard those born under the Year of the Tiger as possessing the traditional values of courage, strength and confidence. Tigers are seen as hardworking and someone on whom family, friends and colleagues can always depend. They are popular because of their reliability and strong sense of justice, they are excellent at giving advice and never hesitate to offer help where it is needed.
I look forward to hearing how staff and students celebrated CNY with traditional firecrackers and fireworks, the giving of red envelopes, a family reunion dinner and the many other rituals that prepare them for prosperity, good luck and happiness in the new year.
Coronavirus Update
The Haileybury community would be aware of the increased outbreak of the novel coronavirus over the last month in parts of China. This forced the early closure of HIST for Semester 1.
HIST has been working closely with government officials and the education bureaus within Wuqing and Tianjin to provide as much information to staff while they are on their CNY break.
I am pleased to inform the wider Haileybury community that we have been in contact with all staff, parents and students and they all are safe and healthy.

Back to School
Our City students have been delighted to see each other, to meet their teachers and to get started on their learning. Our brilliant teachers have done so much to prepare for the start of the year to ensure it is highly engaging for students.
Our 2022 City Goal
We continue to focus on growth and celebrate each important step on our learning journey as we work towards our 2022 Haileybury City goal—to be outward looking and future focused.
It was lovely to see our parent community online at our recent Parent Information Afternoon and Night for ELC, Junior and Middle Schools. We enjoyed sharing the learning we have planned for 2022 and our goals as a campus, school and year group. Your engagement in the learning program and in how we develop and nurture your child’s abilities and skills academically, socially, emotionally and physically is always appreciated.
Early Learning Centre
Bright Smiles and Bags
Reception children have settled into the routines of the ELC. From the moment they arrive with a bright smile and their bag on their back to the engaging conversations throughout the day, our Reception children are already displaying a strong sense of belonging within their new environment.
As new routines are established, so are new friendships. ELC has an explicit focus on supporting each child’s social interactions and emotional development through our Social Thinking curriculum. Families may have heard ELC staff or their child discuss ‘the Zones’ or ‘Group Plans’ and we look forward to hosting a Parent Information Session with Social Thinking expert, Ms Julie Liptak.
This will provide a common language for you and your child when identifying emotions and, importantly, it will provide learning tools for your child to support their emotional regulation. Information will be forwarded through the myHaileybury app and we invite all families to attend.
Wonder World
The Pre-Prep year has commenced with a healthy dose of wonder and curiosity as children question the world around them. Our curriculum is taking shape as children’s interests guide their learning. A focus on caring for each other and for animals has been woven throughout discussions and interactions so far.
It is with great excitement and with thanks to Mr Renard Vardy, a Junior School parent, that we have welcomed caterpillars to the Pre-Prep room. We look forward to understanding how to care for our small friends and watching their transformation.
Junior School
Respectful Relationships
Our students have immersed themselves in some interesting learning experiences. Each class has worked together to explore our Respectful Relationships pillar through the lens of Care, Learn and Play. In Year 3, students worked in groups to brainstorm ways to show empathy, respect, kindness, trust and honesty. They collaborated to create a sentence for their given word with the sentences then shared in class.
“It was interesting to hear what other people’s opinions were.” —Will Weir
(Year 3)
“I did like to do further work around the definitions. It gave me a few things to learn. I liked working in groups.” —Sonny Lim
(Year 3)
Lights, Camera, Action
Our 2022 goal for City Junior School students relies on the phrase ‘Lights, Camera, Action’ to encourage young people to be outward looking and future focused. In assembly and in class, students have been ‘lighting up their thinking’ using various talking points. We focused on wheelchair tennis champion, Dylan Alcott, and how his thinking about opportunities for disabled people was sparked.
In terms of ‘Camera’, we are encouraging students to open up their lens to those around them. Dylan Alcott opened up his lens by thinking about how he could provide more opportunities for people with a disability.
Lastly, our students are encouraged to take ‘Action’ and do something that will have impact for others. Dylan Alcott created The Dylan Alcott Foundation, which assists young Australians with disabilities to overcome entry barriers to sport and education. We look forward to seeing the brilliant ideas that our Junior School students come up with this year.
Middle School
Off to a Great Start
We would like to congratulate our Middle School students for a very successful start to the year. Our Induction Days on Thursday, 27 January, and Friday, 28 January, provided students with a solid grounding. The LEAP and STEM showcase allowed students to hear about the amazing opportunities that are part of the Curious Minds program. For more information about Curious Minds, contact STEM co-ordinator, Louise Elletson or LEAP co-ordinator, Kelsey Collins.
Middle School Visions
Our Boys Middle School and Girls Middle School have crafted their 2022 visions and have begun workshopping how they can live these messages every day.
The BMS is focusing on Habits of Mind, particularly excellence, empathy and creativity. Work in the GMS will centre around a message—’We rise by lifting others’. It encourages students to look beyond themselves and to see how they can contribute to Haileybury and the broader communities.
We look forward to working with our Middle School students on these important messages.

Starting Our Fifth Year with High Expectations
After weeks of preparation, Haileybury Rendall School opened its doors to all students on Monday, 31 January. The biggest ever cohort of over 860 students began their 2022 learning journey with excitement and enthusiasm.
Excited to start the School year
The start to this school year will be like no other for the Northern Territory. When we finished school on Friday, 10 December 2021, the COVID pandemic was still being held at bay up north. Now, just seven weeks later, the COVID-19 landscape has changed as the virus has taken a foothold.
Recently, the Northern Territory's daily case numbers have been in the hundreds. To give some context, the day the Northern Territory topped 1,000 cases was approximately equivalent to recording 25,000 cases in Victoria.
Despite this we are well-prepared and ready for the challenges that will come. We have drawn on the detailed experiences of our colleagues in Haileybury Melbourne and have appreciated their support and advice.
Our staff preparation days and new student induction sessions have run very smoothly. As our enrolment numbers grow, we have welcomed a wonderful and talented group of new staff to our School and it has been rewarding to see everyone embracing the start of the year with vigour and passion.
Clearly, our students have relished getting back to study and catching up with their friends. There has been a very positive vibe as students move up a year level, meet new teachers and enjoy the improved facilities that have been updated across the Christmas break.
As the beautifully cooling monsoonal rains continue to contribute to our wet season, we send our best wishes to everyone affected by the COVID-19 pandemic across Australia, and we look forward with hope to a new and exciting year in the Territory.

Thank you to all ELC, Junior School and Middle School parents and family members who attended last week’s online information sessions. Many parents let us know how appreciative they are of the work done by Haileybury staff and it has also been wonderful to see how quickly new students have settled into Haileybury. We are very glad they are with us!
Thank you too for your support and patience as we work through COVID-19 issues. It is a complex situation, but we will continue to do our utmost to provide the best possible education and care for our students.

Settling In
It is wonderful to welcome our ELC families and to see so many smiling faces on the first few days of school. Over the coming weeks in Reception and Pre-Prep, the children will become familiar with their new environment, explore different learning experiences, meet new children and develop relationships with the educators in their room.
The first few weeks, particularly in Reception, can be difficult for some children as they settle in to their new environment. Your child’s educators will work with you to help make this transition into class as smooth as possible.
Play is such an important part of our program and helps children develop many new skills and practise the skills they have already learned. Play provides opportunities for children to grow social skills, cooperate with others, negotiate different roles, act out real life scenarios and build creative thinking and problem-solving skills.
“Children learn as they play. Most importantly, in play children learn how to learn,” O. Fred Donaldson, Play Specialist.
Below are some photos from our Reception and Pre-Prep classes.

Zones of Regulation and Bucket Fillers
We will be continuing our Wellbeing Programs—The Zones of Regulation and Bucket Fillers—to help students with emotional awareness and self-regulation.
The Zones of Regulation helps children learn to recognise and communicate how they are feeling. Everyone experiences different emotions throughout the day and Zones of Regulation teaches children that this is perfectly normal. It teaches children how to regulate their emotions and then act in an appropriate way and it gives them strategies to get them back into their green zone.
The zones are:
Blue zone: a state of low alertness where our brains are sluggish or moving slowly.
Green zone: our regulated state of alertness where we are ready for anything and can do our best learning and socialising. This is the ideal zone to be in.
Yellow zone: we are in a heightened state of alertness and losing some control.
Red zone: we are not in control of our body and are having very intense feelings.
The Bucket Filler Program teaches children to grow in kindness, self-control, resilience and forgiveness which lead to a happier life. The Program says there are three rules:
Be a bucket filler. Be kind.
Do your best not to dip. Don’t be mean.
Use your lid—protect your bucket and the buckets of others.

Thank you to the Newlands community for the smooth start to the year. Despite the excessive heat, humidity and flooding rain, our students and staff have settled into the routine on campus. It has been wonderful to see our families reconnecting with each other.
We plan to optimise every opportunity we have at Newlands to run events, assemblies, information nights and performances on campus. If COVID has taught us anything, it is how to be flexible. QR codes, RATs, masks and social distancing may still be part of our lives, but we will make every effort to continue to engage our families at Newlands this year.
Medals for Writing
During the holidays we learned that three Newlands students had achieved some outstanding ICAS 2021 Writing results. Students with the top score in each year level, in each subject, are awarded an ICAS medal and a medal winner’s certificate.
Congratulations to Amara Naing (Year 3), Mishka Shah (Year 5) and Andre Beyer (Year 7) on their outstanding achievements.

Lids 4 Kids
The ELC children are involved in a sustainability project called Lids 4 Kids and they are asking families and the wider Haileybury community to collect bottle top lids to bring to the ELC. The Pre-Prep T class are leading this project and do counting and colour sorting activities with the lids before the Lids 4 Kids volunteers collect them for Envision.
Envision is an Australian not-for-profit group that trains disadvantaged people to process the bottle tops and turn them into ink. The ink is used in 3D printers that make prosthetic limbs for child amputees. Your plastic bottle tops can be placed in a collection bin outside the ELC.
Our Reconciliation Action Plan
Newlands ELC has a formal commitment to support national reconciliation and the Newlands Reconciliation Action Plan is registered on the Narragunnawali platform. Each morning, children are invited to recite an acknowledgement of country, and they are learning how to care for the land, the water and the sky and how to work and play as sustainably as possible. We look forward to working in partnership with the Bunurong Land Council to support the children’s understanding and learning about Aboriginal perspectives.
Junior School
First Week of Firsts
The Preps have had a successful beginning to their Junior School journey. They have loved playing in the Junior School playground with the rest of the older students at lunchtime and experiencing new and wonderful activities and subjects. An exciting part of their time in Prep so far has been developing their independence by unpacking their bags in their very own locker. We are all very proud of how the children have settled in to Prep life.
Young Scientists
Year 1 students began the year looking at the role of scientists in society and our communities. The students were very inquisitive about the varied work they do and enjoyed completing experiments—as any young scientist would!
Year 2 Routines
The Year 2 students have settled beautifully into their new routines in the first week of 2022. Their teachers were very excited to welcome everyone back and to settle into the new year level. The students are eagerly awaiting their first Strings lesson, which will be the first instrumental experience for many of them. It promises to be a big year and the students are ready to take it on with tremendous enthusiasm!
Growth Mindset For Year 3
In Year 3, we have started 2022 with a big focus on growth mindset and setting goals. We had lots of fun planting our own succulents and look forward to helping them grow—as we will, too.
Year 4’s Fabulous Start
Last but not least, Year 4 also had a fabulous start to the year. The students enjoyed setting up their new classrooms and sharing stories about their holidays. They reviewed class routines and rules and met some of their specialist teachers. In Year 4, all students are looking forward to becoming leaders of the Junior School, not only in name, but in how they conduct themselves and the example they set to all Junior School students.
Middle School
What a Start!
All Middle School students began 2022 with a new Induction Program that helped students transition to Haileybury and develop skills to assist them with their new devices. It was also a nice way to ease into school life once again.
The Program included all important homeroom activities, so students become more familiar with their peer group and each teacher responsible for their learning this year. All students from Years 5–8 engaged in four important digital learning sessions designed for each year level. They learned about the history of Haileybury and enjoyed tours of the School and Sport facilities.
Year 8 students also immersed themselves in a team building session at Melbourne Cable Park, pushing the limits and working together to achieve impressive physical feats high above the ground and in the water.
The Tripod company worked with students to investigate leadership and examine the qualities of great leaders, and the Induction Program ended with Haileybury’s Deputy Principal, Ms Diane Furusho, talking about Respectful Relationships and Consent. She encouraged students to be themselves throughout their Haileybury journey, to be respectful to all members of our community and beyond, and to call out poor behaviour and disrespect if it surfaces. So many relevant and important activities in just two days—what a start to the year…
Newlands GMS Year 5 will attend camp at Phillip Island from Wednesday, 9 February to Friday, 11 February. It will be an action-packed few days, and a chance to form those important new connections and to push comfort zones during an array of activities. For many students, this will be their first camp due to missing out over the past two years. Travel safe, Year 5 girls! We know they will have an amazing time.
Encouraging Curious Minds
Curious Minds, Haileybury’s extra-curricular program, is full of incredible opportunities for students to hone their passions and build important ‘future-ready’ skills. Programs include Astronomy Club, Haileybury Mini-Masterchef, Debating, Chess, Drama Club and Tournament of the Minds, to name a few. Please check the myHaileybury app and look for the Curious Minds icon to find out more about the selection of programs available. Students were also given an overview of Curious Minds during the first House Meeting of the year.
Oliver Has the Magic Touch
Oliver Toohey (Year 8) has just returned from a successful interstate Touch Rugby tournament. Oliver was a member of the U14s team that drew a series against the South Australian U14s team and competed socially against some adult teams, too. Oliver is touted as being one of our most promising Touch Rugby players and has a bright future ahead.

I would like to thank the students and academic staff of Senior School who have seamlessly and effectively transitioned back to school life over the past week. One of the biggest advantages of Haileybury’s Term 1A program is that the settling in period that is part of any new school year is completed in the previous November. This allows our students and teachers to begin working hard from day one of the new school year.
I would particularly like to welcome students and families who have started within our Senior Schools. I hope you feel that you are part of the Haileybury community already and I look forward to meeting many of you at functions in the coming months.
Prepare for Parent-Teacher Interviews
Parent-Teacher interviews for Brighton, Berwick, City and Keysborough students in Years 9–12 will be held via Zoom on Tuesday, 8 March. Students will finish their formal classes for the day at 1.00 pm.
Online bookings for interviews will open at 12.00 pm on Monday, 14 February, and close at 12.00 pm on Tuesday, 8 March. Zoom interviews run for five minutes and we recommend you leave time between interviews to allow you to move from one teacher to another.
All staff will have waiting rooms so please wait for staff to let you in for your interview at the scheduled time. You must enter your first and last name when logging in to enable teachers to recognise you in their waiting room.
Once the system opens, if you require assistance with your booking, please call the Senior School Office at any of the campuses: Keysborough: 9904 6003, Brighton: 9904 6005, City: 9904 6008 or Berwick: 9904 6007.
Designs on Sustainability
The pictured lamp was designed and made from recycled Red Gum by Srinithi Katarey (Year 11 Keysborough) as part of her VCE Product Design and Technology study in 2021.
The focus is on learning how to develop and apply innovative and creative design practice to design and produce functional and sustainable products. Srinithi developed her design using hand drawn and digital drawing techniques. This image shows her checking the accuracy of her wood turned form using a template generated from her computer-aided design work.
Our Memories of Our Duke of Edinburgh Trip
We are very lucky to have a passionate advocate for the outdoors in Ms Tamsin Visick who coordinates our Duke of Edinburgh program. Ms Visick is a great adventurer who has done many exciting trips, including kayaking across Bass Strait. She is a great role model for our students.
At the end of their experience, students who complete the trips that Ms Visick organises take time to reflect and here we share excerpts from Year 11 students Charlie Bamford and Michael Krol who participated at the end of 2021. It’s clear that the experience was meaningful and echoes the sentiments expressed in the article from The Age published recently.
“Whilst not being the best distraction to pain, the panoramic views made the hike all worth it. Watching the ocean waves crash onto the sand, observing rock faces that have been carved out over thousands of years—they were the reason I came on this journey and it was definitely the reason I pushed on.
Long journeys were not exactly what I expected when coming on this trip but what I found was something far better. I have thoroughly enjoyed this trip and hope that the friends and lessons I gained along the way will stick by me as I continue my schooling journey, and further into the future.”
Michael Krol (Year 11 Keysborough)
“But the thing I enjoyed most about the trip by far was the environment. The incredible views of the ocean, the remote beaches that stretch for kilometres in the hiking part; but also, the impressive cliff faces, the sheer amount of growth and the little caves along the river. I was fully immersed in the environment. It was beautiful.”
Charlie Bamford (Year 11 Keysborough)
50 Questions to Ask Your Teens
I read with interest the attached extract from Daisy Turnbull’s new book, 50 Questions to Ask Your Teens: A Guide to Fostering Communication and Confidence in Young Adults. Schools take on much of the responsibility for the sex education of our students, however, families bear the major responsibility for helping young people better understand themselves and the way they relate to others.

It might have been our first week back but rehearsals began in earnest for the Senior School musical, Matilda: The Musical, featuring more than 70 students from across our Melbourne campuses.
Director Mr Nick Waxman, Musical Director Mr Robert Latham and alumni choreographers Ms Teri Batis and Ms Cassie Peele, led the first COVIDSsafe rehearsal. The cast did a read-through of the hilarious, Tony Award-winning Australian production and even learned some moves for the opening number. It was a delight to be in the rehearsal room to see this incredible show start to come to life.
The Senior Play, These Bridges, and our City Play, Book of Everything, begin rehearsals this weekend.
The cast of Matilda bring the opening song, Miracle, to life. The Matilda cast striking the ‘Matilda Pose’.Just enough space! The Matilda cast fill Aikman Hall for the first read-through.

Making Sweet Music in 2022
The first full week back at school saw rehearsals begin in earnest. Involvement in an ensemble is fundamental to learning a musical instrument at Haileybury. Through weekly rehearsals, students practice their advancing skills together and focused group rehearsals in preparation for a concert event allow students to showcase their developing talents to an appreciative audience.
Punctual attendance at rehearsals and instrumental lessons is crucial and when a student must miss a rehearsal or instrumental lesson, could parents please ensure that relevant Music staff are informed.
This year, more than 800 students will enjoy individual instrumental music lessons on a weekly basis and will participate in one or more of the 50-plus ensembles available at Haileybury. It is heartening to know that our broader school community acknowledges the value of music within a balanced and refined education.
First Concert for 2022
Our first performance at Senior School, Twilight Concert, will be held on Thursday, 17 March. A relaxed outdoor event, it will take place in the Senior School Quadrangle in front of Wings Café at Senior School Keysborough. The concert begins at 5.30 pm and will end at approximately 7.00 pm. Light refreshments will be provided.

Congratulations Lila Ni
Congratulations to Lila Ni (Year 12) who has been selected to exhibit her VET: Creative and Digital Media final at the Top Designs 2022 Exhibition.
VCE VET Creative and Digital Media students produce digital works that encompass web development, games and multimedia design, content writing, audio, film and video, photography, static design and animation. The works selected for Top Designs demonstrate a range of capabilities—from traditional creative skills to use of the latest technology and concepts.
As part of her portfolio, Lila had to produce a 45-second movie trailer based on a fairy tale or novel. After some extensive planning that involved creating a press release, research documents and storyboards, Lila produced a stunning 2D animation inspired by Little Red Riding Hood. Each frame was beautifully drawn using digital methods and was brought to life using Adobe Animate, striking title sequences, original sounds and special effects.
Well done and good luck with the Exhibition, Lila.
Top Designs 2022 opens on Friday, 1 April, at Melbourne Museum.

Meet Two Inspirational Donors
Haileybury Foundation is blessed to have a large number of donors who, through their long association with Haileybury, love giving back to the School.
Roger Holding (’66) has long been a highly engaged member of the Haileybury community.
Mr Holding, a retired Chartered Accountant, has moved back to Melbourne after spending much of his working life in Geelong. He and his wife, Debra, a former President of the Old Geelong Collegians Association, met at a combined alumni dinner many years ago. Mr Holding is a former President of the Old Haileyburians Association and served as Haileybury’s representative on the APS Past Students Golf Committee for many years.
He says that he maintains his connections with Haileybury due to “watching a school expand its culture and be at the forefront of providing an unequalled educational experience.” He is impressed by the development of the City campus and Haileybury’s unique work in Beijing.
Mr Holding is a member of the 1892 Circle and the Winged Heart Society. While contributing an annual gift to the Haileybury Scholarship Fund (1892 Scholarship), he has also decided to leave a bequest to Haileybury Foundation to “help those who have the ability but not the opportunity.”
Mr Holding wants to see young people achieve their potential and enjoy the incredible experiences that a Haileybury education offers.
Dr Douglas Travis (’74), a semi-retired urologist, has carved an impressive clinical career combining business, management and outstanding medical services. He has also held roles such as Director of Surgery at one of Melbourne’s largest public hospitals, run his own private practice and held the position of Victorian President of the Australian Medical Association (AMA).
Dr Travis is proudly supporting three students who are beneficiaries of the Douglas Travis Scholarships. The inaugural recipient was Vinith Imayavasan (Year 11, Berwick) with more recent recipients being, Bhanu Mahendran (Year 8, Newlands) and Makenzie Edwards
(Year 7, City).
Dr Travis spent considerable time with Haileybury Foundation staff interviewing potential candidates for the scholarships. He hopes that students will be able to find their tomorrow with a life-changing Haileybury education.
“It is attitude, mixed with aptitude that will determine your altitude,” he says.
“I have seen many a patient who could have carved out a brilliant career, but the inability to afford an education at a leading private school denied them the opportunity to nurture and grow their brilliance into something that could transform the ordinary into greatness.”
We are incredibly grateful for the contribution that Dr Travis makes and we have no doubt that he is making a significant difference to those students he is supporting and to Haileybury and society as a whole.

Australia Day Athletics
The Zatopek:10, Australia’s premier middle distance track meet, brought together many Haileybury athletes on Australia Day. Despite hot and humid conditions, Amy Bunnage (Year 12) was superb in winning the U20 Ondieki 3000m in 9.37.63, with Lucinda Rourke (OH ‘21) running second. Amy led and ran with the pack, only to kick well clear with a lap to go. This effort was just short of the World Junior Qualifying mark.
Charlie Rogers (Year 12) ran in the U20 de Castella Men’s 3000m and finished 15th, just shy of his Personal Best.
Mia Scerri (Year 12) competed in the Open Long, recording a massive 6.14m which was 2nd on countback. The jump was a World Junior Qualifier but didn’t count due to an excessive tailwind.
Plenty of Haileybury relay runners all competed strongly too including Ben Horsey (Year 12) 4x100m, Luke Gough (Year 11)4x400m, Olu Araba 4x100m (OH ‘21) and Emily McLean 4x 100m/400m (OH ‘11).
Winning Doubles Combo
Olivia Moir (Year 11) and Shalyn Phillips (Year 10) won the U16 Doubles Victorian Schoolgirls Championships at Boroondara in late December. They were the 4th seeds in the tournament and had to overcome fierce competition. Well done!
Netball Congratulations
Congratulations to Liv Jones (Year 11) who has been selected for the U17 Victorian State Netball Squad. We wish Liv all the best with the upcoming final team selection at the end of January.
Future Swim Stars
Things are looking bright as we head into the summer season. Campbell Wilson-Moran (Year 9) has been busy at the Victorian Sprint Championships competing in a number of strokes. Campbell also recorded National Qualifying Times for the upcoming National Age Championships.
Away from the pool and in the open water, Tommy Lane (Year 11) finished 4th in Australia in the 5km event at the Australian Open Water Championships in Adelaide. This is a fantastic result and was only Tommy’s third 5km swim. I look forward to watching Tommy’s great future. He is an absolute work horse and we should see him on the podium in this event in 2023.
Touch Rugby Talents
Oliver Toohey (Year 8) and William Toohey (Year 11) have been selected and played representative touch rugby for the Melbourne Storm U14s and 16s respectively. Each team did very well. The U16s finished 3rd in the Open Men’s A grade tournament.

Campus News
