National awards and recognition underscore the brilliant teaching and dedication of Haileybury educators and the significant progress that has been made to elevate Haileybury Rendall School in Darwin.
Haileybury’s continued focus on student education outcomes has been recognised once again at the Australian Education Awards by winning the Primary School of the Year (non-government).
Haileybury Rendall School won Australian Boarding School of the Year.
Haileybury also won Excellence Awards in Secondary School of the Year (non-government), as well as Innovation in Curriculum Design.
Haileybury’s Junior School program represents the very best practice in curriculum, pedagogy, assessment and student well-being and this is the fourth time that Haileybury has been named Primary School of the Year (non-government).
To be shortlisted and given Excellence Awards for Secondary School of the Year (non-government) and Innovation in Curriculum Design also highlights the very best of the School’s programs.
This recognises our focused delivery on student education outcomes through brilliant teaching and combining the best of evidence-based practice. It also acknowledges our sharp lens on innovation and enterprise to ensure that students are ready for life after school.
Haileybury has also been selected by The Age as a School that Excels, a title that recognises schools that have had an outstanding improvement in their VCE results over the last ten years.
It was also a great privilege for Haileybury Rendall School to win Australian Boarding School of the Year.
In 2017, when we worked with the Northern Territory and Federal governments to start Haileybury Rendall School (HRS), we were committed to turning the boarding house with more than 80 Indigenous students from remote communities into an Indigenous centre of excellence.
We were also determined to develop the best day school in northern Australia. Opening with 380 students in 2018, the school now has 880 students and has just opened a new senior school boarding house, Madjirra (meaning bird).
I am delighted that engagement between students in Melbourne and Darwin has recommenced this year following COVID-19. We have had groups of Year 9 students visit the school in Darwin, HRS Year 9s are about to visit Melbourne, and VCE Outdoor and Environmental Studies students have enjoyed a Mt Buller experience together.
We look forward to further developing student engagement opportunities.
I congratulate and thank all the staff at Haileybury Melbourne and HRS (Darwin) for their outstanding work, which has once again been acknowledged at a national level.

Connecting Through Parent-Teacher Interviews
Both our Culture of Learning and our Culture of Connectedness come into play when we start thinking about Parent-Teacher Interviews. These are a wonderful opportunity for the partnership between school and home to be fostered while discussing the progress, goals, strengths and challenges of each child.
Our Parent-Teacher Interviews are being held for ELC to Year 8 parents on Monday, 29 August, and Thursday, 31 August. These will be held via Zoom and we ask that parents note the times of their interviews and ensure they are in a quiet place ready to talk to our staff.
More Than Meets the Eye to STEM Week
Congratulations to our Curious Minds team who provided many opportunities for our students to be immersed in STEM during National Science Week. With the theme of Glass: More than meets the eye, a range of activities were on offer like working with microscopes, breaking glass with your voice and creating stained glass windows. Mr Lam’s Prince Rupert drop presentation was certainly a smash!
Book Week
On Monday, 22 August, attention turns to Book Week which this year has a theme of Dreaming with eyes open… As part of the event, the library team has organised visits from authors including Declan Fay, Chris Kennett, Adrian Beck, Kim Kane and Nova Weetman.
Our Pre-Prep and JS Book Week Dress Up Day will be held in East Quad on Friday, 26 August, and we cannot wait to see all the fabulous book characters!

Dental Health Week
To mark Dental Health Week, dentists from our parent community visited the Reception and Pre-Prep classes to discuss oral hygiene.
Dr Rachel, Dr Vivian and Dr Alex spoke about the types of foods and drink that are good for our teeth, the importance of brushing teeth and how to do it properly, and they described what happens when you go to the dentist.
Thank you, dentists! We are so lucky to have such a wonderful community who contribute to our curriculum. The children certainly learnt from your interesting and informative sessions.
Joyful Jumping
During our Environmental Learning and Out and About ventures, the ELC children have enjoyed jumping for joy in puddles while building their gross motor skills and wellbeing.
There were squeals of delight as the children jumped and splashed so much that there was no water left in the puddles!
It was so much fun that Katrina Manson couldn’t help but pull on her gumboots and join in, too.

Inquiry Lessons Come to Life
Sitting alongside our English and Mathematics curriculum is Inquiry, where students explore concepts by researching, collaborating with peers and presenting information. In Prep, the central idea for Term 3 is The food that we eat is grown on farms.
Prep students visited Myuna Farm and had a ball learning about the animals and taking part in milking and feeding the goats.
In Year 1, the central idea is How do different cultures share stories? Didgeridoo Australia visited and shared how our Indigenous cultures share stories through music, art and dance.
“I learnt how to find an emu egg by playing an instrument that makes the emus pop up their heads, so you know where they are.”
Amelia
“I loved the didgeridoo because of all the sounds it can make, some sound like animals”
Ethan
Science Hits
Years 3 and 4 students had an incursion called ‘The Lab’ that was a chemical sciences extravaganza filled with experiments and hands-on learning opportunities.
Students developed key skills in teamwork, critical thinking, problem solving, creativity, financial literacy, digital literacy, communication and presentation. As a highlight of The Lab, our Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 students visited a pop-up planetarium to discover the wonders of the night sky.

Respectful Relationships
Each term our Year 8 House leaders share the responsibility of planning and running a House Assembly centred around our Respectful Relationships pillar. This term’s assembly focused on empathy and the power of understanding what it means to walk in somebody else’s shoes.
Our leaders took a moment to publicly acknowledge their peers who demonstrate empathy towards others each day. It was a lovely moment in celebrating a trait that we value deeply within our Middle School.
Within our Wellbeing Program we are continually focusing on how to best equip our young students with skills to navigate relationships, challenges and personal growth. In the past few weeks, there have been a number of incursions from Man Cave, Enlighten Education, Toolbox Education and Elephant Ed.
They have helped students foster essential skills, build knowledge and opened up an ongoing positive conversation around growing up as a teen.

Celebrating Dads
I hope you have all enjoyed your term so far. It’s great to see social activities and camps happening around the School.
Just a reminder that on Friday, 2 September, we will be holding our Dad’s Night at the Marine Hotel. Come along for a few drinks while watching the footy finals.
We also have our upcoming Fathers Day stall on Wednesday, 31 August, and Thursday, 1 September. We will put out a call for volunteers very soon.
As we fast approach the end of our summer break, Haileybury will welcome 24 new staff members in the new academic year. They will be involved in all aspects of the School—from logistics and boarding to welfare and the academic.
We will also continue our relationship with the teaching department of Changchun Normal University and receive 17 interns whom we will mentor in our Junior and Senior Schools.
All new staff have been involved in our comprehensive onboarding process and will complete a two-day induction program this week. This will include hearing keynote speeches from school leaders where they will be given an overview of the school systems and process, the academic programs within each sub-school, and the key goals and objectives for the upcoming year.
Each new staff member will be assigned a mentor who will assist them in the first month and oversee their induction program checklist. We are very excited to welcome our new staff members to the Haileybury community.
Meet the New Head of Junior School English
Our Junior School English program encompasses Primary School and Middle School, and our goal is to provide a comprehensive and immersive program that improves student reading, writing, speaking, listening, spelling and handwriting. In short, it prepares them for the transition into the VCE English program.
Recently we welcomed Simon Tatler as the new Head of Junior School English at Haileybury Tianjin.
Simon became a Senior Teacher in 2015 and has led bilingual and international academic teams as a Director of Studies and Senior Director of Studies in Tianjin. In this role he provided leadership in the development, implementation and evaluation of the English as a Second Language program.
Simon has trained, mentored and coached many teachers, leaders and managers in English training schools in Tianjin and has more than 10 years’ experience teaching English. He holds a Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA), a Diploma in TESOL from Trinity College London and a Masters in TESOL from Stirling University.
Simon enjoys reading, keeping fit, music and board games. He is married with two children.

Building Confidence in Our Young People
Public speaking seems to be one of those topics that can send shivers down an adult’s spine. How many times have you heard someone say ‘No way, I’m not good at public speaking’?
We want to avoid that mindset in our students so we start encouraging public speaking skills in our youngest Haileyburians by helping them to develop these skills as they progress through the School.
Our ELC children can confidently speak about their learning and present to their adoring families. Our Prep to Year 4 students are regular speakers at Assemblies and on special occasions, such as the 100 Days of Prep or their Celebration of Learning.
Our Middle School students regularly showcase their thoughts and ideas in their classrooms and on Levels 4 and 5 to further build confidence in front of a big audience of their peers and the whole of Middle School.
Our Drama department, led by Philippa Bell, provides many rehearsed and impromptu opportunities and our Middle School students also have the opportunity to join our Debating Club and the many Curious Minds activities that promote public speaking skills.
These are further developed in Senior School, in the classroom, through our LEAP and STEM activities and through our many leadership opportunities.
Practising Public Speaking
At City, we value confidence and we look for every opportunity to challenge our students to take on things that need practice and that grow their confidence.
Recently, students from Years 4 to 12 showed prospective parents around our campus, sharing their experiences, pointing out the great facilities that we have, listening carefully to questions and responding with confidence.
The feedback from visiting families was overwhelmingly positive. They were simply blown away by the quiet confidence of our students and praised their genuine interest and warmth, as well as their passion for Haileybury.
We were delighted to hear this praise and we know a positive mindset and the important skill of being able to speak in front of a new audience will last a lifetime!

Teachable Moments
As we continue to support children with their social interactions and emotional regulation, it is important to remember that these skills are learnt by children as they observe and engage with the world around them. Acknowledging and discussing a range of emotions and zones supports children in their understanding of themselves and others.
It is unreasonable for anyone to be in the ‘green zone’ all the time, nor is this expected. When you find yourself in the ‘red zone’, embrace this as a ‘teachable moment’ to discuss your emotions with your child. Modelling ‘self-talk’ as you outline to your child how you calm yourself provides an opportunity for your child to acknowledge emotions and equip themselves with tools to help them regulate those emotions.
Welcome to the Tinker Table
The ELC were excited to see the arrival of our new Tinker Table on the Level 3 terrace. It provides hands-on opportunities for children to explore different resources and materials to construct and de-construct, while developing their fine-motor and problem-solving skills.
We are looking forward to an upcoming workshop with our Buildings and Grounds Supervisor, Gabe Di Martino. A familiar and friendly face in our ELC, Mr Di Martino and his team will join us in coming weeks to work with children on how to safely use tools on the new Tinker Table, like hammers, tape measures and screwdrivers.
These will be available for children to use with educators as they build and create using wood and other natural materials.
We look forward to the exciting opportunities and creations our Tinker Table will provide children in the ELC.

Creation Stories
Based on a central idea that ‘All Cultures Share Stories’, our Year 1 students immersed themselves in the storytelling of Ganga, an Indigenous speaker from Didgeridoo Australia.
Throughout this Inquiry unit, our Year 1 students are exploring diversity and reflection. Sharing and appreciating their own stories in the classroom enabled the students to be outward looking and future focused as they reflected on the perspectives of other cultures.
Ganga engaged the students through music, movement and storytelling. Our students were able to interact with items used in Indigenous culture such as a boomerang, didgeridoo and a variety of animal skins. It was a superb opportunity for our students to connect their learning with a new experience.
“It was really exciting because we got to hear music and were the first people to hear his new song. We were also taught how to collect emu eggs.”
Hamilton Binnie-Garcia
“I enjoyed it when he played the didgeridoo. I learned that in Wurundjeri time, they used nature as their shops”

Australiana Book Week Parade
The Children’s Book Council have drawn inspiration from the Indigenous Dreamtime and there is an Australian theme to Book Week in 2022. Allie Kuhne, Head of Library, has organised a range of learning experiences for our Junior School students to engage in.
From our Australiana Book Week Parade and theme-based craft activities to author visits, our students will be able to indulge in books and activities as we celebrate reading at Haileybury City.
Adrian Beck, author of the Derek Dool, Stuff Happens and Total Quack Up series will visit the Junior School students this week to talk about reading. We look forward to seeing the creative costumes and to see our students celebrating reading.

Dance and Aerobics Nationals
Congratulations to all our City campus students who represented Haileybury at the 2022 Dance Star and School Aerobics National Championships at the weekend. It was wonderful to see our students’ hard work and commitment pay off on the stage.
Thank you to our aerobics coaches, Ella Wright-Wood (OHA 2020) and Sophia Grigoriadis (OHA 2018) for their time and encouragement. It has been a very successful year for our Middle School students in these programs.
City Middle School Play
Excitement is mounting for our upcoming Middle School show, Alices in Wonderland. After all, why have only one Alice when you can have four at City campus? Every Monday and Wednesday afternoon our Middle School cast have been busily learning their lines and perfecting their craft.
We look forward to welcoming parents to the promenade theatre-style show in which each audience member is allocated a card suit and will progress through the levels of City campus, viewing a short excerpt of Alice’s adventures on each of these levels.
Thank you to the staff involved in putting this amazing show together, in particular the dedication of Philippa Bell, Head of Drama (City). We look forward to seeing our Middle School students shine.
The wintery chill continues to hit but our school spirit burns bright as we support our Hearts and Bloods at the start of the spring sporting season. It is so wonderful to see our City parents on the sidelines as our students take on the other APS schools.
There is so much excitement ahead with the Middle School musical and the HPF City is looking forward to a screening of its own with a Magenta Screening at The Village Coburg Drive In on Friday, 9 September.
There will be a separate invitation in the myHaileybury app but there will be two screenings available for families. Final bookings must be made by Monday, 5 September.
A G/PG rated movie from 6.00 pm – 6:30 pm suitable for Junior School
An M rated movie from 7:00 pm suitable for some Middle School/Senior School families
Tickets will be $40 per car and you will receive a Haileybury lolly bag on entry.
Movie titles won’t be available until the week of the screening, but don’t let that put you off. Pack up the car or SUV with doonas and pillows, grab your popcorn and thermos and park up next to another Magenta family for a chat through the windows.
Richard Winkett (HPF Middle School Executive member) has kindly arranged this outing for us and can testify that his kids love a night out at the drive-in.
We hope to see you there!
Term 3 Events and Goals
Friday, 16 September, is the last day of Term 3 and it feels like we have only just gotten started! However, as we move into the warmer months, it’s time to check the fit of those summer uniforms.
We will be having our Pop-Up Second-hand Uniform stall on this day and you will have the opportunity to purchase some items for students who have miraculously grown during the winter. Again, please check myHaileybury for further details.
We are grateful to our City Campus for arranging Fathers Day activities for the fathers and special men in our children’s lives. Whether you have ELC or Senior school students, these events are precious memories. Please check the myHaileybury to see what your school has organised.
Again, a huge thank you to our Haileybury parent community. We are so grateful for your support as we continue to achieve our fundraising goals. The HPF City is contributing towards the Haileybury City Gym works and we look forward to sharing our contribution with you. Thanks to Melissa Tolani (HPF Senior School executive member) for assisting with assessing the gym items to be purchased.
We would also love you to consider supporting a student who may not otherwise be able to attend our amazing school. Please click the link below to support the HPFC student scholarship.
Have a wonderful fortnight everyone and please feel free to reach out and chat with us anytime about what matters to you in your school community at hpfcity@haileybury.vic.edu.au.

Campus News
I am writing this article after being in Sydney where Head of Boarding, Dennis Nowak, and I attended the 2022 Australian Education Awards with colleagues from Haileybury Melbourne.
We are very pleased to inform you that we won the Australian Boarding School of the Year award, which is recognition of the outstanding work we have done to provide a safe and nurturing environment for the 90 boarders who have resided with us this year.
Our detailed organisation and effective ongoing response to COVID that allowed our boarding school to stay open all year while managing the health of our students was highly regarded by the judging panel.
The award also recognises the challenges we have successfully faced and managed to help our remote boarders navigate the differences between life in community and life at HRS. This success reflects the contributions of all staff at HRS including the School Executive, boarding staff, teaching staff, wellbeing, support and corporate staff. It is a great team effort.
We also recognise and congratulate our wonderful boarding students—without them, nothing is possible.
We also held a very successful NAIDOC Week last week. For me, the highlight was when approximately 900 staff and students attended an open-air whole school assembly on the natural amphitheatre below the newly refurbished Building 8.
It was the first time we have been able to bring the school together from ELC to Year 12.
The assembly was opened by our Indigenous Family Liaison Officer, Latisha Marranytya, while the didgeridoo was played and then local Larrakia Elder, Bilawara Lee or Aunty B, performed the Welcome to Country.
Our Indigenous Transition Officer, Braedon McLean, then did the Acknowledgment of Country and introduced our special guest, Minister Ngaree Ah Kit, who spoke of her journey, struggles and successes as a proud Indigenous woman.
The Garramilla dancers performed a traditional dance before asking the crowd if anyone wanted to join them. About 100 boys and girls of all ages came down the hill and joined in the next dance.
The assembly ended with the chance for every community member to be part of a smoking ceremony conducted by Larrakia man, Trent Lee.
Well done to all members of our community for joining in and contributing to the celebrations.

The Importance of Reading
Educators in the ELC regularly share reading experiences with children in large and small groups. Story time is one of the most enjoyable segments of the day where we gather together, immerse ourselves in books and allow our imaginations to flow.
Through picture books, educators help children see the connections between words and pictures, and this leads to interesting conversations that help develop children’s self-confidence and communication skills. Picture books help children to regulate their emotions and teach them new facts about their world which is essential for social, emotional, linguistic and intellectual development.
Book Week Celebrations Begin
This year’s theme for Book Week is Dreaming with Eyes Open and Book Week celebrations begin on Monday, 22 August, until Friday, 26 August.
During the week the children will have a storytelling session with Coral Vass, an award-winning Australian children’s author. During this session there will also be a focus on story telling with dress-ups and puppets.
On Friday, 26 August, the children will come to school dressed as a character from a book and participate in the Book Week Parade with the Junior School.

Term 3 Activities
It’s hard to believe we are more than half-way through Term 3. With so many events and activities, the students have been keeping themselves very busy.
Last week, our Years 7 and 8 students went to Keysborough to hear from Eddie Betts. Through his career in AFL, Eddie shared stories of the relationships he formed and the experiences he had—both positive and negative. The students walked away with an understanding of the importance of resilience and perseverance in challenging times.
Last week also saw our Curious Minds program host a fantastic STEM Week. Students participated in activities such as making Wizz Fizz, creating periscopes, competing in Kahoot quizzes and treasure hunts. Thank you to all the teachers who facilitated these fun opportunities.
We have also had our Tournament of Minds team and Lions Public Speaking participants compete in their respective competitions over the past two weekends—congratulations to all involved.
This week is Book Week and the students are looking forward to the various author talks and activities arranged by our library team. Our Middle School students will be hearing from Amie Kaufman, author of the Aurora Rising trilogy and The World Between Blinks.
Parent-Teacher Interviews are next Monday and Wednesday. Bookings have opened via the myHaileybury app.

Haileybury Newlands celebrated Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics during STEM Week. This year, the week coincided with National Science Week and the theme was Glass: More Than Meets the Eye.
Students took part in a broad range of activities that explored the unique qualities and extensive uses of glass. From lenses to view the world and its use as a building material to its role in connecting the world and its breathtaking beauty in art, students discovered that glass is a defining material of the human age.
What a sight! Newlands staff and students wore a sea of denim in support of Jeans for Genes Day to raise funds for the Children’s Medical Research Institute.
Congratulations and thank you to everyone for raising a grand total of $1,456.20.
Fathers Day is a special occasion and at the ELC the students look forward to the opportunity to spend uninterrupted time with their dad or special visitor by showing them around, reading stories and doing activities together.
This year ELC students have invited their fathers or special guests to visit them at the ELC on Tuesday, 30 August (Reception S and N, PPK,) and Friday, 1 September (Reception W, Pre-Prep P and Pre-Prep T) from 2.30 pm – 3.30 pm.
Design a Water Wall
Newlands ELC has invited budding young scientists in our Girls and Boys Middle School to design a water wall for the ELC students so they can experiment with the effects of gravity on waterflow.
Winners of the competition will have their creation built in the ELC playground and will win a prize. Lisa Langenfelds, Senior Science Technician, is coordinating the competition entries in Middle School.
Celebrating Early Childhood
National Early Childhood Educator’s Day takes place on Wednesday, 7 September. At Haileybury, we highly value the hard work and commitment of our early childhood educators in providing the children with enriching learning experiences.
We invite you to tell the early childhood educators how much you value their input through comment notes in the ELC foyer on this day.
Recently the ELC also hosted the Health and Human Development VCE students (Units 1 and 2) who visited to discuss healthy development in young children. It was also an opportunity for the students to consider a career in early childhood.
Over the next 10 years there will be an expected shortfall of 11,000 educators in the early childhood sector. There has never been a greater time to acknowledge the valuable work of our workforce.

Fathers Day Celebrations
We are overjoyed to be able to host this special event on school grounds and face-to-face finally! There is a real buzz among the students as they prepare for this fabulous Junior School event.
The celebration will begin with fathers and special friends meeting for refreshments on the lawn outside the Resource Centre at 11.00 am.
They will then collect their children from classrooms to walk around the school and take part in a wide variety of games and activities. It is sure to be an enjoyable and memorable day.
All Cultures Share Stories
As part of our Year 1 Inquiry unit, All Cultures Share Stories, we were fortunate to have a visit from Didgeridoo Australia.
Students were immersed in Indigenous storytelling through music, dance and word. We heard the creation story of the didgeridoo and were captivated by the sounds and music that it could produce.
Ganda, our Indigenous presenter, kept us engaged with dance, music and stories and we had a wonderful time celebrating Indigenous culture and stories.

Big Science Competition
This year over 55,000 students took part in the international Big Science Competition and 64 of them were Haileybury Years 9 and 10 students.

City Campus After School Study
It has been great to see City Senior School students working with Daniel Greenham (OH 2021/99.95 ATAR) and staff as they get ready for the business end of the year and a busy period of SAC tasks and trial exams in the weeks ahead.
VCE Trial Examinations and Revision Sessions
For students studying Units 3 and 4 VCE, Haileybury will conduct a series of trial examinations beginning Friday, 2 September, to Friday, 9 September. A copy of the trial examination timetable is available to students and parents via the myHaileybury app.
Families should also be aware that Haileybury academic staff will run a series of revision workshops for Units 3 and 4 studies throughout the September school holidays. While attendance at these sessions is not compulsory, families may want to take this into account when planning holidays.
Tertiary Pathways Information for Years 9 and 10
As students move into the VCE years, they and their families often have questions about how their academic pathways at Haileybury match up against university pre-requisites.
In the past, each Year 10 student has received a copy of a VTAC Year 10 Guide to help with this planning. VTAC has now moved all information contained within this guide to their website.
This website contains information about VCE subject selection, scaling of VCE study scores and a section called prerequisite and course explorer which provides information on tertiary entry requirements for students who will enter universities or other tertiary institutions.
Haileybury will continue to provide students and parents with information about subject selection and university entrance throughout the next three years, however, this guide is a good way for Years 9 and 10 families to familiarise themselves with VCE and Tertiary entrance jargon.

Congratulations to the cast, crew and creative team who brought A Little Bit of a Much Ado About Nothing to life over three sold-out shows!
It was an absolute treat watching the audience laugh, gasp and beam during the 80 minutes of fast-paced Shakespearian foolery.
Many thanks to Nicole Smith for directing the show with vision and energy, and to Tim Peatman (OH 2021) for his technical support under the leadership of Matthew Sanderson.
The Years 11 and 12 students did themselves proud as they delivered performances with nuance and wit.
Curiouser and curiouser…Don’t miss the Alice in Wonderland experience! Be immersed in this unique theatrical extravaganza that has been created to showcase the city’s unique architecture.
The Haileybury concert calendar offers a diverse range of performance opportunities to all our developing musicians and within the concert program every effort is made to feature Junior, Middle and Senior students across classical to contemporary music styles.
This year we have enjoyed Twilight Concert, the Senior School Musical – Matilda, a large ensemble Middle School concert series across all sites, Junior School string concerts, soirees, Aria Night and our Annual Concert. Just last fortnight the department also hosted two jazz nights at the MEMO Music Hall venue in St. Kilda.
With such a busy program, it is rare to introduce an entirely new whole-school concert. So, I am thrilled to announce the inaugural Chamber in the Chapel concert taking place in the David Bradshaw Chapel at Keysborough on Thursday, 1 September.
Similar to Aria Night, which was introduced in 2013 to showcase solo classical voice, this concert will solely focus on classical repertoire performed by our most accomplished Senior School string, woodwind, piano, brass and choral chamber groups.
The Chapel will be decorated with lush drapery and featured lighting, guests will be greeted with light refreshments and performers will be dressed smartly wearing their all-black concert attire and special music department tie.
The concert will begin at 7.30 pm and finish soon after 8.30 pm.
I warmly invite all families and friends, particularly those with Middle School students in the Music program, to enjoy the performances of our talented and dedicated senior music students.

Visual Arts
It’s wonderful to share the journey our students take in building their skills and art practice from the youngest years to the Senior School. Here, we highlight the drawing development of our Years 4 and 8 students.
Real-World Media Experience
On Thursday, 28 July, the Units 3 and 4 Media students were lucky enough to experience the real-world inner workings of an international media broadcaster, Gravity Media.
Students were taken through the production process and spoke with industry professionals, including producers, directors, audio engineers and on-screen talent.
They gained insights into how Gravity Media produced and broadcast sporting events like the Tokyo Olympics and the Australian Open for Channel 7, and they toured the Docklands studio where Better Man, the Robbie Williams feature-film, was shot in one of the largest studio spaces in the Southern hemisphere.
Students got the chance to produce their own ‘live’ performance, taking turns to be camera operators, directors, audio engineers and on-screen talent themselves, and they saw how their media studies can take them in a myriad of career directions.
Over the weekend of Friday, 12 to Sunday, 14 August, Pipes & Drums students from our Senior A Band travelled to Mount Evelyn for a two-day ensemble music camp.
The camp aimed to help students hone their skills ready for the Australian Championships in October when they will face fierce competition from Scots College and Knox College in Sydney, Scotch College in Melbourne, and other bands in the open section.
The band will enter the Novice Juvenile A section to compete for under-18 accolades and will also enter the open Grade 4A section, which is an adult grade.
Students arrived at Oasis Camp in Mount Evelyn on Friday afternoon and spent the two days attending rehearsals and playing games. The World Pipe Band Championships (WPBC) in Glasgow were scheduled for the same weekend and students were excited to stay up and watch the live stream of the world’s leading performers playing for the ultimate prize of winning the Grade 1 WPBC.
What a great way to inspire our Haileybury students!
The ‘Camp Royal’ tradition continued where student-led groups performed their competition repertoire in a mini band concert and competition format. Pipe Corr led by Pipe Major Ryan Corr (Year 12) won the Medley element, and Field Marshal McBrodie led by Pipe Major Brodie Nash (Year 12) won the MSR element. Field Marshal McBrodie also took the top spot at this year’s Camp Royal.
The past week has been an incredibly successful one for Haileybury Foundation.
We started with an intimate Cocktail Party for more than 50 people to thank loyal supporters of the Foundation, many of whom have supported us since 2010.
Haileybury Foundation Chairman, Neil Sutcliffe, spoke of the progress made, particularly over the past five years. He also outlined the aspirations for the Foundation, including establishing 50 full funded scholarships by 2030.
The Cocktail Party also enabled us to launch the Haileybury Foundation Giving Day that was held on Thursday, 11 August.
Our aim is always to engage with more members of the Haileybury community and to tell the story of the great work of the Foundation to more people within our community and as part of this, the Haileybury Foundation Giving Day was a resounding success.
To have 207 donors on our first ever Giving Day was a wonderful result. The donations will enable the Foundation to provide two fully funded scholarships to students who would otherwise never have been able to attend our School.
The gift of an education is one of the best gifts that anyone can provide and we look forward to sharing news of the successful students in the weeks to come.
Special thanks to our matching donors whose vision and generosity allowed all donations on the day to be doubled.
From Monday, 22 to Friday, 26 August, the School will celebrate OHA Week. This is an opportunity for Middle, Pre-Senior and Senior School students to learn more about our alumni and to engage with the alumni network through activities, presentations and events.
On Tuesday we will announce the Outstanding Young Alumni Awards at the Senior School Assembly. These awards are presented to multiple recipients each year across five fields of expertise: Arts, Business, Sport, STEM and Community.
Nominees must have graduated from Haileybury within the past 12 years, have made significant achievements in their field of endeavour locally, nationally or internationally and exemplify the best attributes of youth in today’s world.
They must also have exceptional human values that inspire others and have given excellent and sustained service to the OHA or its alumni community. Some former winners will join us on stage for the presentation.
Senior School students will be treated to a mini lunchtime carnival at the Keysborough campus with food trucks, a DJ and activities such as Bubble Soccer, Sport Simulators and Mini Golf. The activities will run thanks to the assistance of our dedicated OHA Clubs.
Pre-Senior students will participate in their regular afternoon spring sport training or an activity they have signed up to. Most of these activities will be run by our OHA Clubs or our incredible alumni, and include Jewellery Design, Lawn Bowls, Learn to Draw Caricatures, Martial Arts, Stand Up Comedy, Yoga or a Masterclass with some of our AFL/AFLW superstars.
The Week culminates on the Friday with Middle School students treated at their home campuses to delicious lunchtime BBQs and presentations.
We look forward to sharing some happy snaps in the next edition of Insight!
The Winter season concluded at the weekend. Haileybury boasts the largest number of students participating in the APS/AGSV Winter Sport every Saturday.
Students and coaches have battled through COVID-19, colds and flu to maintain a very impressive attendance rate of 95%. This statistic is a credit to all families, students and coaching staff.
All-Australian Football Selection
Congratulations to Tairon Ah-Mu (Year 9) who was named in the All-Australian Under 16 Football team. The team was selected from young players from across the country who participated in the State Schools Victoria carnival in Albury.
Success in the Swimming Pool
Tommy Lane (Year 10) continues his blistering form in the pool. Recently, Tommy represented Haileybury Aquatic at the State Swimming Championships and won the 400m and 800m freestyle events. He came 2nd in the 200m and 3rd in the 100m freestyle.
It was a very successful weekend for Tommy and for Haileybury Aquatic. Congratulations.
Going in to Bat for Cricket
Katherine Dekel (Year 11), Inakshi Sehgal (Year 9) and Thivyaa
Mahendran (Year 10) have been selected for Cricket Victoria’s Development
and Female Emerging Players programs.
This is a wonderful achievement as women’s cricket continues
to grow and provide opportunities for young players to develop their skills.

Junior School
Middle School

When: Every Tuesday
Time: 8:05 am
Location: Newlands Green
Students must wear Haileybury PE uniform and comfortable running shoes and are encouraged to bring a water bottle. The morning run finishes at 8:25 am which allows time for students to get changed into school uniform before home room commences.
We aim to have as many students as possible join us for a nice morning trot.
Middle School Movie Night
Save the Date! On Friday, 9 September, all Middle School students and their families are invited to join an after-school outdoor cinema experience. BYO picnic blankets, bean bags and picnic dinner. Enjoy some music and snacks from the HPFK and a movie as the sun goes down. Details to come.
Middle School Cyber Safety Webinar
Please join the Middle and Senior School parent webinar on Wednesday, 7 September. Through the lenses of an online gamer will be presented by The Cyber Safety Project.
Fathers and special friends are invited to an afternoon of lawn bowling with their Middle School children. The event will be held at the Keysborough Lawn Bowls Club on Friday, 2 September. Food and drinks will be available and everyone will be able to bowl on the immaculate greens in bare feet or flat soled shoes.
Fathers are asked to meet their children at the club at 2.00 pm and students will be driven to the club from Newlands. Students can then leave for home with their fathers or special friends.
Please note that this event is only for Middle School students.
We are so very lucky to have amazing parents and friends who take time out of their day to assist with fundraising for the Very Special Kids BBQ. Congratulations to all.

This year over 55,000 students took part in the international Big Science Competition and 64 of them were Haileybury Years 9 and 10 students.
To achieve a High Distinction or a Distinction award requires an exceptional understanding of a broad range of scientific disciplines and is a remarkable achievement.
Congratulations to all our award recipients on their outstanding achievements.

Haileybury HPFK Facebook Page
This year our target is to reach 1,000 Haileybury HPFK Facebook Group members. If you would like to connect with our community, please join our Facebook page.

Director of Performing Arts & Head of Haileybury Music
