It is breath-taking to see so many contributions under our Christmas tree in the administration foyer. Thank you to all our families for their generosity. There are still a few days left in which donations will be accepted before being sent to Anglicare to distribute prior to Christmas Day.
Team Kids will be operating programs across the summer holidays, please click here for all the details.
We look forward to welcoming students back to School on Monday, 30 January and we ask that students arrive by 8.25 am and bring all the items from their booklist. Further details will be sent out during the holidays regarding arrangements.
2022 has been a fantastic year at Castlefield. I thank our outstanding students for the dedication to their learning and their connectedness across the School. They have ensured this year will be remembered so richly in Haileybury’s history.
I thank our parents for their continued support and involvement, and our staff for the exceptional passion and care they devote to our students each and every day.
Please enjoy the festive season and have a safe and pleasant holiday break with your family. I look forward to our continued association in 2023.
As we spend time winding down, celebrating the year and looking forward to next year, it’s important to remember to be in the present. The ELC has recently added a new aquarium in the foyer for all to share. We can expand on mindful learning practices while watching the fish, swaying plant life and the constant stream of tiny bubbles oxygenating the water.
On Saturday, 26 November we warmly welcomed next year’s ELC students and parents. The meeting was an opportunity for children to meet their educators and peers and spend some time in their learning environments. It was lovely to see children eager and engaged, and each child took home a small gift to enhance their sense of belonging to their 2023 class.
After many practices in the classrooms and on stage, the ELC recently celebrated with an end of year concert in Dickinson Hall. The Reception and Pre-Prep groups did an amazing job, finishing their performance for families with a group rendition of Celebrate good times.
This week, as the School year wraps up, each group will hold a class party and the children’s learning journals will be presented — a collection of memorable moments and evidence of learning from their year in the ELC.
For some students the bus ride on the day of an excursion is a great highlight in itself! Lots of adventures have been had in the last few weeks, with the Preps meeting Prep students from each of the Melbourne campuses and visiting the zoo.
Our Year 1 students headed to Twisted Science for some great hands-on experiments and the Year 4 students explored Melbourne Museum and a show at the IMAX cinema.
We’re always proud of how our students conduct themselves in these public places — always with respect and manners that are noticed by teachers and venue coordinators.
For art this term, our Prep students have been exploring diversity and looking at what lives in our oceans. Eliza Wang chose to make an octopus in paper clay. Students experimented with clay and mosaic materials, and environments for their creatures were constructed in crayon and watercolour paint.
Year 1 students are exploring change and are looking at the weather and its influence on our lifestyle and the environment. Students have explored artworks by Vincent Van Gogh that look closely at the seasons and they constructed windsocks that they decorated using frottage, or leaf rubbing art.
With their time in the Junior School coming to a close, we congratulate all our Year 4 students as they embark on the next stage of their education and enter the Boys Middle School and Girls Middle School.
Thank you for your service to the School by running recess and lunch time clubs, for being buddies to our Prep students, speaking at assemblies and for engaging with our community in your social justice endeavours. The Graduation Assembly was a highlight and a significant milestone for each student as they passed over the Junior School bridge.
The Middle School has been a hive of activity, despite the absence of a whole Year Level. Term 1A has seen staff and students refreshed, re-engaged and invigorated on their jumpstart in to 2023. It is amazing to see how quickly students adjust, relocate their games areas and friendship groups, and move on to ‘greener pastures’.
This peaceful transition and reset occurs as soon as the Year 8s move into Pre-Senior. Congratulations to the Year 7s for their seamless move into Year 8, and to the Years 5 and 6 students who have maintained an incredibly high work ethic.
A holiday is not far away, and as we all eye off the finish line, we are reminded to focus on our technique, hold our form, finish strong and run right through the finish line.
As the year comes to an end, I wish to thank and acknowledge the leadership of Doug Bailey in his role as Head of Boys Middle School and as Senior Deputy Head of Campus. Doug’s impact on the Boys Middle School has been one of kindness and connection with the students, staff and parents.
On behalf of our whole School community, we thank Doug for the work he has done in shaping the Boys Middle School and we wish him all the best in his next venture.
Katrina Manson
Head of Castlefield (Brighton)
As we come to the end of the year, we look back and appreciate the many events we have been able to attend as students or parents — a vast difference to the past couple of years. We’ve held Year level nights at the Marine Hotel, a Mother’s Day Lunch at Encore, a Years 5 and 6 Disco, Junior School movie night, Junior School Halloween Disco and Middle School bowling nights.
These events would not run successfully without help from our wonderful parent volunteers, so thank you to those who assisted throughout the year.
Please don’t forget the Second-hand Uniform Shop (SHUS) for any uniform requirements for next year. Our final day of service this year is Thursday, 8 December from 2.00 pm – 4.00 pm.
The SHUS will be open on Tuesday, 24 and Wednesday, 25 January 2023 from 10.00 am – 1.00 pm.
We look forward to another busy year in 2023 and wish you all a merry Christmas and safe and wonderful New Year.

This year Barbara Zhu and her Primary School students have continued building, planting and using the on-site gardens for an integrated science, mathematics and language curriculum. They have installed a couple of new garden beds to grow soybeans, carrots, corn and to produce compost and there are also three new greenhouses. The greenhouses serve as a living laboratory to study plant needs and carry out a variety of experimental work.
In addition, students are studying the challenges and limitations of their space and brainstorming how to incorporate their garden into the School, and how to plan and expand their garden on the Haileybury grounds.
Senior School held a workshop for all students on how to better handle their emotions as part of their Wellbeing program. The workshop was conducted by Liu Shuting who has been involved in child education for 20 years. She is a senior national psychological consultant and is a special parenting expert for the Tianjin radio and television networks.
Ms Liu focused on teaching the students how to become better at managing their emotions and how to choose their reactions to bad situations. She also conducted role-plays to show students how to use different strategies to help deal with negative emotions.
The 2022 Haileybury GAP Student program concluded recently with our returning graduates having made a very positive impact on our younger students across the school. The GAP program enables our graduated students to discover a passion, build self-confidence and independence, and explore opportunities through hands-on learning within various departments across the School.
The students in our Junior School are always excited to have our GAP students return to spend a little time in their classes. The GAP students usually work a four-day week and typical duties involve classroom assistance with the Junior School English program and Year 12 classes, team teaching in art, and conducting special activities during our sports programs.
As part of the Junior School English program, our Year 6 Middle School students participated in their bi-annual debate during the past few weeks. This is an important event for the students and is a great way to showcase the students’ English skills and to keep improving their written and oral communication skills.
The debate topics centred around social media and included some excellent well-researched arguments. Congratulations to all students! The Finals for Years 7 and 9 will be held over the coming weeks and will be shared via video with our Middle School parents.

Being a welcoming campus means we love meeting new families. Our 2023 cohort were greeted at our King Street entrance on Up Day by our future Year 8 leaders and the Heads of School. Our new families enjoyed the City campus’ warm welcome and, before they knew it, their young person was whisked off to join their new class.
I thank Alice Johnston and the HPF City team for running our pop-up Second-hand Uniform Shop.
It was also a glorious day for our ELC families who came into the centre to see their three-year old loving the environment in the ELC. Our new Junior School students experienced an exciting day learning lots of new things in their new classroom.
A highlight was watching our new 2023 Prep cohort on the mat, commencing their Haileybury journey of learning to read. We hosted a Parent Information Session for new Prep families, and we loved sharing our tips for making Prep a success.
Our new Prep cohort have been so well prepared for the next stage in their learning journey by Rachel Pontikis, Gigi Chau and the ELC team. It was wonderful to have Jacqueline Gough and Brent Ritchie join us for the day as the new Heads of Junior and Boys Middle School.
Our Junior School Awards and Presentation Assembly was a wonderful celebration of the Junior School’s achievements in 2022. I congratulate all our Academic Award winners and thank our musicians who entertained us with their performances.
Our Middle School Speech night was a glorious celebration on the banks of the Yarra. As the sun set over the city skyline, we were uplifted by our many musical performances, our young people’s successes and the finale of every student singing the song, Somewhere Only We Know.
Our campus is a special place for us all and as the sun sets on 2022, we think with gratitude of all the great things we have achieved this year.
We were also delighted to name a trophy in memory of Mitch Williams which will be presented each year for Contribution to Girls and Boys Sport.
We are deeply grateful for our ELC Terrace with its extensive views of the city gardens, roads and skylines. It is a space where the children are able to so freely experience all their surroundings have to offer. The immediate response that children exhibit when they hear sirens and then see a police car, fire truck, or ambulance is a true testament to their connection with the world around them.
Recently, the Pre-Prep children embarked on an excursion to West Melbourne Fire Station. They were lucky enough to learn about all the features of the fire trucks, have a turn sitting in a truck and use some of its equipment. With great excitement, the children each took turns using the hose to spray one of the accommodating firefighters who was dressed in a special protective suit.
Meanwhile, Reception children have been busy learning about where they live and what this looks like on a map. Children have shown a great deal of excitement at connecting the names of places they have visited with their visual representations on maps. We will continue to look at maps of our local area and of Australia.
Our Semester 2 Social Justice Captain, Dimitri Macris, has used our 2022 goal to raise awareness for families and people who need our support this Christmas. Dimitri used our ‘Lights, Camera, Action’ phrase to light up our thinking with an engaging speech at Assembly that initiated action by finding a way to donate to Melbourne City Mission.
Our Christmas tree is standing tall at our ground floor reception area, adorned with decorations and lights. For each donation we have received, a student from that family has been able to assist in hanging a star with their name on the tree. This represents the kindness each family is showing and will result in food, clothing and necessities provided to those in need.
We have received an impressive amount of donations so far and we look forward to many more donations as we finish the term. Thank you to all our Haileybury City families for their support of this important initiative.
Our Prep students experienced a fantastic day at Melbourne Zoo during Week 8, engaging in many learning experiences. Together with their class teacher, Tracey Cronin, and supported by some parent helpers, our Preps traversed their way around the zoo and learnt so much.
Our students were privileged to engage in a Zoo Explorers session, where they were able to investigate and explore different animal habitats. They experienced a close-up encounter with a tortoise and were thrilled to see the giraffes.
One obvious highlight was seeing the new Asian elephant calf. The female calf, yet to be named, is the first natural-born elephant calf at Melbourne Zoo.
Our Prep students were grateful for the special zookeeper talk to inform them all about the elephant calf. It was a wonderful excursion involving all four Melbourne campuses. Our Prep students should be extremely proud of their learning and the behaviour they displayed. They were a credit to the Junior School.
What a fabulous end to the year we have had! We have enjoyed heading out into the CBD and using our local facilities to celebrate the end of the year, including Walking Tours of Melbourne, sporting excursions and our House Sport competitions.
Our Year 6 students headed to Adventure Park Geelong and enjoyed a day of being together and having lots of fun! Students used this day to test their problem-solving skills for different games and activities. Of course, there was lots of splashing and frolicking too!
Our Year 5 students headed to Melbourne Museum and enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about the history of our culture. They embraced the story-telling and took part in a self-guided tour, where they explored various areas of the museum. We love that the Melbourne Museum is literally on our doorstep.
Our BMS and GMS Captains for 2023 have been announced. We congratulate all students who applied and took the time to write and deliver a well-considered speech. Their confidence and careful thought about what we value in the Middle School was obvious to all our voters.
The Years 5 and 6 students took their responsibility very seriously by listening astutely to every speech and considering who was deserving of their vote. We were impressed by all applicants and wish our 2023 leaders the best of luck as they take over the reins and begin to lead our Middle Schools.
Caroline Merrick
Head of City
As we close the 2022 academic year, there is much to be proud of and grateful for. Our students have sharpened their minds academically, artistically and in their sporting pursuits and they have continued to foster kind hearts and contributed to the wider community.
Thank you to all our wonderful teaching staff who help our children grow and learn these important life skills.
On behalf of the HPF City, we wish all our students and families a wonderful festive season! Here’s hoping you enjoy some quality time with your loved ones and get some well-deserved R&R.
Wishing you a wonderful break and a terrific start to 2023.

This week I had the pleasure of chatting to three emerging and successful young authors from our Junior School: Freya Galati (6M), Zara Pease (6G) and Pippa Wren (5M). In the recent 2022 Young Territory Author Awards, Freya and Zara took out the top two individual awards.
Freya was announced as the 2022 Young Territory Author of the Year and Zara won the CBCA NT WOW Award, which is given to a book the judges think has that special ‘wow’ factor.
Pippa received a Highly Commended citation for her book. All three girls were writing in the 9-to-12-year-old section of the competition.
To enter, the girls had to create and write their own book. Freya’s book was titled June Girls and she began writing it straight after winning an award in last year’s competition. She completed this year’s entry in August after many edits and redrafts.
The judges said the following about Freya’s story: ‘A beautifully written story of three characters and their intertwining lives. The prose is concise yet distinctive and every character has a distinct voice. The judges loved how the characters were slowly revealed through their perceptions of themselves and one another. Very impressive and mature writing with memorable phrases and engaging story line.’
Zara wrote and illustrated the children’s picture book, The Diggerbees, about a family of diggers and she was inspired by the funny antics of the local orange-footed scrub fowls.
The judges said the following about Zara’s story: ‘A local picture book with gorgeous illustrations. The relationship between the illustrations and text on each page was effective and enhanced the story. The plot was well paced and the use of age-appropriate literacy and numeracy elements to support various sections was a great idea. Nature is a wonderful treasure, and this picture book has become a new favourite.’
Pippa wrote a graphic novel called Chubby Budgie and, like Zara, did all the writing and illustration herself. The girls have been writing stories and books from a young age and credit their mothers for giving them lots of support and guidance.
Anyone aged between seven and 18 can enter so hopefully our girls inspire some more budding writers for 2023.
Freya’s and Zara’s books have now been placed in the Casuarina Library in Darwin, which is a great honour.

Sincere thanks to the students, staff and families for the way we have worked together to ensure our campus is a wonderful community. I am incredibly proud of our students for their hard work and dedication to their learning, as well as the way they treat each other kindly and with respect.
Thank you to the parents for their steadfast support and assistance in making Edrington a warm and welcoming place for all. I am also incredibly grateful to all staff for their tireless efforts in providing an outstanding education for the students, and for their collegiality and their commitment to our School.
I wish you all a very happy and safe holiday season with family and friends and I look forward to seeing you in 2023.
Speech Night was a wonderful celebration of the year. It is the first in-person Speech Night we have held in three years, and it was filled with music, ceremony and an acknowledgement of our students’ achievements.
Congratulations to all award recipients including the Dux of Haileybury College Alan Xia, Dux of Haileybury Girls College Angela Li, Dux Proximus of Haileybury College Vedant Gupta, and Dux Proximus of Haileybury Girls College Prisha Shantharahavan.

This year’s Art Exhibition was an outstanding event and showcased the considerable artistic talents of students in ELC to Year 9.
Orientation signals the beginning of a new year ahead. What an exciting time for all the children moving on to their next stage of learning and for the new children starting their schooling adventure.
It was wonderful to meet all the new families joining our community on Saturday, 19 November. We welcome you and look forward to continuing our journey together. It was lovely to see the children interacting in their new environment and the confidence of the new Pre-Prep classes who are looking forward to their next chapter in school.
Thank you to the Haileybury Parents and Friends Edrington for providing access to the second-hand uniform sop. Please keep this service in mind for future purchases. This is a great and sustainable way to purchase your child’s uniforms.
Thank you too to all the families who attended our ELC Parent Information session. What a fantastic display of our ELC community and we hope you made the most of your chance to meet our new Head of ELC, Sara Hall, and your child’s educators for 2023.
What an amazing year it has been! We have been at School for every single day and our students across Prep to Year 4 have had many firsts; walking across the stage to receive an award, incursions and excursions, and performing live at their Strings and Scrolls Concert.
Of course, there are also the many normal things that occur at School, such as playing with friends and learning face to face. We are very proud of all our students and the diligence they have shown in the classroom with their learning.
Thank you to our community — our parents, guardians, grandparents and special friends. Your support is invaluable to us. Thank you to all our staff at Edrington — you make each day incredible for each individual child at our school! We wish everyone a merry Christmas and wonderful New Year. See you in 2023.
Congratulations to all Middle School students who were acknowledged at Speech Night for their diligence and effort during 2022. It was a wonderful occasion and an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of many students and to recognise a busy and successful year at Edrington.
The 2023 Middle School Leadership Team has been announced. The leadership application process was rigorous and competitive and positions were voted on by staff and students.
The new Captains will be inducted at a Leadership Assembly in Term 1, 2023. Congratulations to the following students who will lead the Middle School in 2023.

Congratulations to the 2022 Human Powered Vehicle team who had a fantastic week. Every student gave their all and Haileybury came fifth — the highest result the School has ever achieved.
We are extremely proud of the effort of the students and staff over the past four months. Thank you to all parents who travelled with the team and proved to be such a valuable support to staff and students.

Thank you Edrington for your generosity. Your donations and gifts will go a long way towards making Christmas a beautiful day for families in need. The support of our community blows us away!
We have over 300 followers on our Facebook and Insta pages now! Thank you to all our new followers for jumping onboard. Tracy and I would also like to welcome Kate Haakman and Georgia Scanlan to the HPFE.
Kate and Georgia will keep you all updated via our socials about all things regarding the Edrington Community and they will help Di and Kelly put together a roster system for the Uniform Shop. If you have an hour to spare once a term, please get in contact with them so we can get a calendar together of volunteers for 2023.
Make sure you send Kate and Georgia pictures of your gingerbread house creations. We can’t wait to see them!

Ten years ago, I commenced in my role as Head of Campus at Newlands. My aim was to intentionally create a professional environment of collaboration, growth and academic rigour. The word ‘intentionally’ was deliberate. It means to act with an awareness of what one is doing, with planning, purpose and conscious intent.
Over time, Newlands has become known for its intentionally welcoming culture where the tone of the campus, and its pride in the history of the School, all lean to an implicit expectation of high standards for all.
Newlands has been my home for ten years. As my time comes to an end as the Head of Campus, I look forward to my new role as Acting Deputy Principal in 2023.
With Mark Harrop at the helm as Acting Head of Campus, and the outstanding executive team and brilliant teachers as champions for our students, Newlands will continue to flourish.
Our reputation as the place you want to be — for families and staff — makes me exceedingly proud. We have long wait lists, outstanding academic results and students who will make the world a better place when they enter the workforce. I couldn’t ask for a better legacy.
I wish you all a happy and safe Christmas.
TeamKids have another amazing SUMMER Holiday program planned!
Learn new skills and make new friends under the supervision of qualified educators. Children will enjoy a digital detox with the no screens policy and delicious and nutritious morning and afternoon snacks are provided. TeamKids is also CCS-approved care.
Head to their website to secure your spot!
Haileybury is proud of its heritage and traditions and these are reflected in the School uniform.
A recent survey was conducted regarding the school uniform.
In preparedness for the new year, please view the updated Haileybury Uniform Policy which applies to all genders.
In 2023 we look forward to sharing and continuing our collaboration with you regarding further developments of the School uniform.
With the conclusion of the year the ELC children are very excited to be taking their Learning Journals home. These books are a celebration of your child’s progress throughout the year and document learning from the perspective of educators, children and their families. The children demonstrate their connection and sense of belonging by referring to the Learning Journal.
Each year we conduct an annual survey on the ELC and the service it provides. The Survey has been sent to each family through the Haileybury ELC App. The link may also be found here.
We would greatly appreciate you allocating 10 minutes to complete the survey and provide us with your feedback. The responses are confidential and assist us in evaluating the service to help us determine future goals and ensure we continue to improve and reflect our community’s needs. Your contribution as a user of the service is invaluable.
The ELC children recently presented their annual Christmas Concert to family and friends in the ELC MPR. Reception and Pre-Prep children enthusiastically performed a number of songs and dances. The concert was an opportunity to showcase the children’s musical abilities in front of a captive and appreciative audience.
The Junior School had a thrilling Orientation Day on Tuesday, 22 November. Excitement filled the air that morning as the students anxiously waited to see what class they would be in for 2023. Students completed a variety of tasks throughout the day and celebrated at lunch with a Zooper Dooper and a range of lunch time activities in the Quad.
As part of the Worawa Aboriginal College Leadership & Mindfulness Program offered by Haileybury and Equestrian Australia, Worawa VCAL students finished the practical part of their program with a visit to Newlands. The Worawa students planned and ran a game-based activity program for our Year 4 students.
Worawa students participated in an eight-week program designed to explore practical aspects of leadership and communication. The program also has a mindfulness focus and the students visited a Holistic Equitation business and participated in a Horses for Healing experience with horses, a donkey, chickens and dogs.
This is the follow up from our Year 4 students visiting Worawa in Term 2 as part of their Sports Reconciliation Day.
The 2022 Newlands Year 4 students will officially graduate from Junior School and embark on their journey in to Middle School for 2023 on Tuesday, 6 December. During this time, students, teachers and families can reflect on the many memories created throughout their time in Junior School.
During the ceremony, the audience will view a photo journey, listen to student reflections and watch as the Year 4 students walk over a bridge to signify their transition away from Junior School and into Middle School.
Awaiting them on the other side to officially welcome them will be Mark Harrop Head of Middle School (Boys) and Sandra Tiepermann Head of Middle School (Girls). To end the morning, students will receive a graduation pin and bear to be signed by teachers and peers.
Please join us and celebrate the end of the school year with melody and song!
Each year level will present a musical item they have been learning in their Junior School Choir lessons.
Following this event, the HPFK invites you to join us for the Twilight Picnic.
Congratulations to Jazmin Firth (Year 8), Alana McDuff (Year 8), Samantha Tan (Year 8), Rachel Yu (Year 8), Jessica Lam (Year 8), Keira Jordan (Year 7), Chloe Nguyen (Year 7), Alice Taberner (Year 7), Ella Zhang (Year 6), Pia Cincotta (Year 5), Zara Tiepermann (Year 5), and Willow Lubin (Year 5) for their contribution to our Girls Middle School ‘BE inspiring’ initiative.
These girls upheld the integrity of the GMS by following their passions and demonstrating their own values. Their photos were made into posters to inspire the other students in the Girls Middle School.
Our Girls Middle School is full of talented young women and this initiative promotes our students as positive role models — inspiring others to get out there, take on opportunities and to be kind. We thank them for showing great leadership and for getting involved.
We know there are many more of you out there doing amazing things and we would love more students to be involved in our 2023 campaign. Students are encouraged to email Sally Green and please make sure you have your parents’ permission to participate.
This year we had a number of students participate in the National History Challenge. Students selected a topic based on their individual interests, conducted independent research and then constructed a historical essay using primary and secondary evidence and examining the theme of Cause and Consequence.
Congratulations to Zachary Lim (Year 8) for his selection as a finalist and for proceeding to National judging. Zachary was awarded a Young Historian Silver Award in the special category ‘Asia Australian Relationships’.
Congratulations to Haveesh Surendran (Year 7) on being awarded the overall 2022 Year 7 Victorian Young Historian Gold award. He also won the Young Historian Gold Award in the special category ‘Indigenous History’.
Congratulations to both of these students for their hard work and dedication. Students interested in entering the National History Challenge in 2023 should look for an announcement regarding information and sign up at the end of Term 1 2023.

I would like to thank all Haileybury staff and students for the way in which they have begun the 2023 academic year. Term 1A is a chance for students to begin their 2023 studies early and to become comfortable in their new classes, before heading off on an extended summer break.
It takes an enormous amount of organisation and effort to ensure that a new school year is ready to go in November of the previous year. However, Haileybury believes that getting a head start on the new year is of great benefit to our students, particularly those undertaking VCE Units 3 and 4 studies.
As the academic year concludes, I would like to sincerely thank you all for your ongoing support of Haileybury.
My best wishes to you all for a safe and happy time away from the usual school routine.
A large number of Haileybury students and families gathered on the evening of Friday, 2 December to celebrate another successful year at Haileybury. The night also featured prize giving for our very best sportspeople, performers and academics.
The quality of the musical performances on the night were outstanding, bearing testament to the strength of Haileybury’s Performing Arts program.
Charlotte Hendrie (Year 12), who was recently selected to attend Haileybury UK as part of the scholarship program, arrived safe and sound in London. Charlotte has spent time with Stephan Muller and his family doing some ‘must-see’ bits of London. This is her first time in Europe and she was pretty awestruck — London is looking resplendent in the Christmas lights.
Charlotte arrived at Haileybury UK to the warmest of welcomes and settling into her single room in a Year 11/12 corridor, which was decked out with fairy lights for her.
We wish Charlotte all the best on this adventure and look forward to her sharing her experiences on her return.
It was great to see so many Haileybury students participate in our Art Competition. Congratulations to Kendrick Goy (Year 12) for winning the Senior School entry.
Congratulations to Edward Johnstone (Year 12) whose vector thrust control has been shortlisted for entry into the Top Designs 2023 exhibit at Melbourne Museum.
We would like to congratulate Locklyn Luu (Year 10) on being accepted into the Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars Program for 2023.
The Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars Program is an academic enrichment program that supports high achieving Victorian Year 11, Year 12 and select secondary students living close to the New South Wales and South Australian borders.
Congratulations to Divyan Bhasin (Year 10) on completing their Bronze Level and Ishi Jajpura (Year 12) on completing their Silver Level Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
Our Coordinator of Duke of Edinburgh Program, Tamsin Visick, attended Melbourne Town Hall for the presentation of the Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards to seven Haileybury students who have achieved this outstanding level in this prestigious award.

Rehearsals have begun for the Senior School City Play, Brainstorm by Ned Glasier. The passionate group of West Melburnians meet twice weekly to develop the production ready to perform in March 2023.
Brainstorm is a script like few others as it relies on those who are producing the play to decide on many elements of the script and performance. It was developed in collaboration with neuroscientists Professor Sarah-Jayne Blakemore and Dr Kate Mills and is designed to be created and performed by teenagers, drawing directly on their personal experiences.
These rehearsals are run by Director Jane Marshall with the ensemble working together to develop a brand-new version of this fascinating play.
The 2023 Years 9–12 Senior Musical SpongeBob auditions ran in late November with a great turnout from our excited thespians. Each person was put through their creative paces as they sang, danced and acted together to create the exaggerated, comical and fantastical world of Bikini Bottom.
Students from City, Brighton, Berwick and Keysborough worked collaboratively to bring to life cartoonish sea creatures and calamitous choreography. The cast will be announced soon as we prepare for our May performances!
Huge thanks to 2022 Drama Captains Sam Prins and Kim Petley, and 2023 Drama Captains Thanh Vu, Laura Burns, Geneveive Gray and Harry Jones for supporting the day and encouraging others.

On Thursday 10th November, 300 Prep to Grade 6 students from all four of Haileybury’s Melbourne campuses participated in the 2022 Haileybury Dance Gala. This event has been unable to take place since 2019, so the night was extra special for all involved.
The end of year Dance Gala is always a memorable and special event on our school calendar and a chance to celebrate our after-school dance students and their fabulous work throughout the year.
The Prep to Grade 6 after school dance class students worked tirelessly on multiple items for the Dance Gala evening which explored various dance genres such as jazz, hip hop, lyrical and theatrical. The night was colourful, energetic and fun filled. All students had a wonderful time, beaming with pride as they came off stage. Congratulations to all students who were involved and thank you to all parents and friends who came along to support the event
The success of this program is largely due to the hard work, time and efforts of our fabulous campus coordinators and coaches. These members of staff and past Haileybury students are very much invested in their classes and students and do a myriad of work each week to ensure the very best outcomes. Their dedication, time and effort is greatly appreciated and it certainly showed on Thursday evening.
We look forward to the after-school dance classes occurring again in 2023. Enrolments will open in late January, please check the myHaileybury app for details.

2022 has been a very successful year for the instrumental Music Department and I am confident the year has been a rewarding experience for students and parents who committed to our exciting journey of creative endeavor. The high level of engagement and artistic growth across the year has been most pleasing.
Haileybury can now boast that more than 1,000 students will receive a weekly instrumental music lesson in 2023. In the last month alone more than 80 families have enrolled for lessons. As available places in the program are filling fast and with several instruments already now having waitlists, I encourage families hoping to secure a 2023 place to look at the Instrumental Music Handbook ASAP.
The music culture at every campus now sees more than one in four students carry a musical instrument to and from school during the week. Music plays a high-profile role at Haileybury.
For Senior School, 2022 highlights included the Twilight Concert, Aria Night, Annual Concert, Jazz Nights, Chamber in the Chapel and recent outstanding performances at Senior School Speech Night.
For Middle School, the Term 2 concert series was simply outstanding. Audience numbers were large and all students did themselves proud. This year’s combined Spring Concert also saw more than 1,500 guests enjoy performances by combined one-school concert bands, percussion ensemble, brass ensemble, string orchestras, choir and guitar orchestra.
At the Junior School level, the recent Year 2 String Concert and Scrolls Concert demonstrated what can be achieved when an outstanding department combines with an abundance of Junior School enthusiasm.
The department’s final performance for 2022 will be Haileybury Carols held this Thursday, 8 December at St Paul’s Cathedral in the heart of Melbourne. It would be wonderful to see as many families as possible celebrate the season of Christmas in a non-religious, culturally diverse end to the school year.
The event will run from 7.00 pm – 8.00 pm. I strongly encourage families to arrive by 6.30 pm to avoid any potential traffic and parking congestion issues.
Well done to everyone and thanks for a most enjoyable year!

Director of Performing Arts & Head of Haileybury Music
Units 3 and 4 Media students got some experience in the field last week during an excursion to Docklands Studios. Students from all four campuses got the chance to peer behind the curtain and take part in the filming of Channel 9’s Millionaire Hot Seat as part of the live studio audience.
After being forced to surrender their electronic devices at the door to ensure a fair competition — a traumatic event for all involved and especially Peter Aumann — the Haileybury cohort were ushered into Studio 5.
They were able to ask the producer and the host, Eddie McGuire, questions in between takes and ad-breaks and learned that it takes a crew of nearly 100 to produce a show the scale of Millionaire. This crew includes two Old Haileyburians and former media students!
After several hours of enthusiastic clapping and cheering, students got the chance to go on set and chat with Eddie about what it’s like to be at the helm of one of the longest running game-shows in Australian television history. The students walked away with a new-found understanding of the complexity and collaboration required to create a professional media production.

The final get-together for the Pipes & Drums community took place on Saturday, 26 November. The event was arranged by our wonderful Parents and Friends of the Pipes & Drums organisation.
Our end-of-year celebrations attracted over 120 guests and was filled with music from our entire Pipes & Drums program, who performed some of their repertoires for parents. What a day to wrap up 2022!
Our competition teams will be working hard to get their 2023 competition material ready for the Victorian Pipe Band Association season starting in February 2023.
Student leaderships will be announced before the end of the term.
We wish everyone a happy holiday and a wonderful new year!

Haileybury Foundation has enjoyed an extraordinary year thanks to the incredible support from within the Haileybury community.
In 2022, over $1 million has been raised to support Haileybury Foundation’s three funds: Building, Library and Scholarship.
These funds have had, and will have, a major impact on education, resources and buildings and our vision of assisting every student to achieve their very best.
We are delighted that 29 students, including two students at Haileybury Rendall School, will commence or continue their education at Haileybury in 2023 thanks to the generosity of a Haileybury Foundation Scholarship.
Our donors are changing lives forever.
Parents who have children graduating from Haileybury at the end of this year will have a wonderful opportunity to stay connected with Haileybury.
In 2023, the Haileybury Society will invite members to a range of events including:
Just as their children can stay engaged through the Old Haileyburians Association, former parents of Haileybury can remain in touch through the Haileybury Society.
Membership to the Haileybury Society is free and open to any parent who has had a child graduate from Haileybury and who wishes to remain connected with the School and fellow parents. Membership includes invitations to society events, School events and sporting fixtures, and a range of other membership benefits.
Parents wishing to stay connected through the Haileybury Society are encouraged to register their preferences here.
Donations to Haileybury Foundation continue to stream in. Our students are incredibly fortunate to be in receipt of such a high-quality education that would otherwise be out of their reach.
All gifts to Haileybury Foundation are tax deductible. Our donors are having enormous impact and we have been delighted with the involvement of our community, from past parents, alumni and staff to current parents and former staff.
Donations can be made on our website.
Thank you.

John-Paul (JP) Borghouts (OH 1994), also known as Sergeant Borghouts, is in the Royal Australian Army active Reserves. He has worked in the Army for 24 years — 10 years full-time and 14 years in the active Reserve. He hopes to be promoted to Warrant Officer Class 2 (WO2) in the future.
While in active reserve, JP has worked as a police officer, mainly with the NSW Police Highway as a patrol officer.
JP’s brother, Peter (OH 1991) joined the Army in 1992 and he inspired JP to follow the same career path.
JP has served in Darwin, Townsville, Brisbane, Sydney and Victoria (Puckapunyal). In 2001, he was deployed to Border Force to assist with securing borders at a time when Australia faced major challenges with managing illegal boats and immigrants.
He has also been an investigator in the Royal Australian Corps of Military Police. In this role he had to deal with road-related trauma and is passionate about preventing road trauma since a friend from the Army was involved in a serious crash with a drunk driver.
While JP missed out on overseas deployment, the highlight of his career is the mateship that comes with the job.
He has been happily married for 14 years and has two teenage children. He still feels connected to Haileybury and he and Peter enjoyed attending the Canberra Chapter dinner in 2019. He says his children would have attended Haileybury had they been living in Melbourne.
Thanks, JP, for staying connected and for your continued service to our great country.
David Deitz (OH 1994) joined the Army in 1995 as part of the Ready Reserve scheme, which involved completing one full-time year of basic training and learning a particular employment skill, then returning home to study for four years.
David chose infantry and studied accounting which came with a requirement to work 50 –100 days a year as a part time reservist. After only a year, David realised he wanted to return to the Army full-time and he moved to Brisbane’s Enoggera Barracks.
He was posted to multiple units at Enoggera, 8/9 RAR, 2/14 LHR and 6 RAR. With 6 RAR, he deployed overseas on multiple occasions. In 2000 and from 2006 to 2007, David deployed to Timor as a specialist in reconnaissance, sniping and tracking.
“They were interesting experiences, following footprints or broken twigs, tracking pro-Indonesian militia supported by Indonesian military who were causing disruption with local people across the border between East and West Timor,” he says.
In 2006 –2007, David deployed to provide security and stabilisation to the area after the elections and civil unrest as the country transitioned from East Timor to Timor-Leste.
David then studied nursing part time after becoming a patrol medic for two years while still serving. He stepped away from infantry for a short break and assisted the medical unit teams with health assessments, pre-employment checks and immunisations.
In 2008, David was deployed to Afghanistan and was a bush master driver for a reconstruction task force. He helped local Afghani people by building girl’s schools, women’s hospitals and patrol bases for Australian soldiers to provide security to Tarin Kowt in the Uruzgan Province.
He completed another stint in Afghanistan in 2010 where he was located for nine months in a patrol base and mentored Afghani soldiers so they could learn how to provide security for their own country and people. While in that location his unit improved electricity and water supplies and pumps. They also provided women's health hubs run by female doctors and nurses from the ADF once a month. Despite the tragic loss of six mates on this tour, David witnessed the positive change for locals while they were there.
Upon returning home, David gained a Defence Force scholarship to complete a Bachelor of Nursing full-time and spent two years working in the peri-operative department at North West Private Hospital in Brisbane. He was then posted to 2nd General Hospital Battalion in Brisbane and was part of the field surgical unit in the deployable hospital.
David is currently looking after his wife and boys and is appreciating every moment with them. He loves playing football with an over 45’s team and is proud of what he has accomplished over 25 years of Army service and seeing the difference he and his fellow soldiers were able to make.
Thank you for attending the recent OHA Brisbane Chapter dinner and staying connected, David. More importantly, thank you for your service to your country.

Pictures: the auditionees were split into three groups and were given a dance, acting and singing auditions led by Nick Waxman, Emma Ford, Nicole Smith and Robert Latham.

Rod Marshall

Stephanie Shen (Year 4) has just been nominated as a member of the Australian National Fencing Squad. She will visit the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra and participate in the National Fencing training camp organised by the Australian Fencing Federation.
Stephanie is very close to her dream of representing her country. We wish her all the very best!
Blake Connors (Year 12) took home three silver and two gold medals at the National School Diving Championships where he represented Victoria. Blake is Haileybury’s Diving Captain and we look forward to him displaying his skills in the 2022/23 APS summer season.
Head Haileybury Swim Coach, Kelly Stubbins, has been selected to attend the National (Swimming) Event Camp on the Gold Coast in February 2023.
Kelly is going to be coaching well-known Australian athletes who are focusing on the 200m events, such as Mack Horton, Zac Stubblety-Cook and Mitch Larkin.
No doubt what Kelly learns while working with these athletes will greatly benefit our swimmers. We wish Kelly all the best.
