The endeavour of some outstanding Year 12 students shines through in their academic achievements and on the athletics track, promising a bright future.
Haileybury Year 12s had their last combined day for school on Friday and today is the final day for boys with graduation events and a valedictory dinner. Tomorrow is the graduation ceremony and valedictory dinner for Haileybury girls.
It is a great pleasure to have these significant events back on our calendar and to send the graduating class off with some pomp and ceremony. These events capture the friendly, trusted relationship between the teachers and the students and acknowledge the extraordinary commitment of families.
As a part of the ceremonial events, I ask the graduates to pledge the following:
The Pledge
That your future life will be one of endeavour, of honour and with a commitment to excellence, personal fulfillment and social justice
That you will not forget those who stand with you today
That you will not forsake your links with the School and that you keep a place in your hearts for Haileybury as you will always have a place in the School.
I like the word endeavour. Its definition is simple: try hard to do or achieve something. Much of what we face in life can be overcome with endeavour.
I think this group of graduating students has already made a good start in this direction. They have shown much endeavour in working through the challenges of COVID-19 and in keeping their studies and co-curricular activities on track coming out of the many lockdowns and restrictions.
I saw a lot of this endeavour on display at the APS athletics competition last Saturday, too. The Year 12s were outstanding, but the commitment from the whole student group involved was wonderful to watch. It was the first time the APS carnival had been a combined fully co-educational event with exactly the same events held for girls and boys. It was a credit to all the 11 APS schools.
The Girls Open 3000m was won by Haileybury Year 12 student Amy Bunnage in a remarkable record time of 9.03.19. This is world-class for her age. Amy shows great endeavour.
In Year 9 she went on a Haileybury Year 9 Option to the USA which included visits to Ivy League and other leading American universities. Amy was inspired and set herself a goal to get a scholarship to one of those universities. She continued to work hard on her extraordinary running talents and made an equal commitment to her academic study. Last week Amy received a scholarship to study at Stanford University which is ranked number 3 in the world in the QS University rankings.
On Saturday, Amy showed her commitment to her School and her fellow students with her brilliant running. She lapped every competitor in the seven-and-a-half-lap 3000m race to set her record.
Amy then waited on the track and congratulated every competitor from the A and B race, that was run concurrently, as they made it to the finish line. She gave a special double high five to Haileybury’s second competitor, Libby Craig, as she crossed the line. Libby also showed great endeavour. She is in Year 6 and ran in the Open B 3000 and finished second.
It was a great day, and I was very proud of our Haileybury girls’ team who finished a close second to Caulfield Grammar and the Haileybury boys’ team who achieved an excellent sixth place. Congratulations to Wesley boys who won the APS title for the first time since 1947.

Wellbeing
It’s that time of year again. As VCE preparation ramps up, so can your child’s emotions. So how can you help them survive and thrive during the next few months?
For thousands of students across the state, the pressure is on. VCE assessments and exams are looming and it’s natural for teenagers to feel their anxiety levels rising as they reach the pointy end of their time at school.
It can seem that years of homework, essay writing, exams, reading and revision all come down to this – a busy VCE examination timetable with no relief in sight for some until the final exams draw to a close at 4.15pm on Wednesday, 16 November.
If you have a teenager who is completing VCE this year, be prepared for some rocky and challenging moments, and during those more emotionally-charged or emotionally-draining episodes, remind yourself that, as it does every year, the stress will pass and there is life after VCE.
In the meantime, what can a parent say or do to try and ease some of the VCE pressures for their child?
Here, Diane Furusho, Deputy Principal – Student Wellbeing and Maria Bailey, Haileybury Director of Counselling Services, share their professional – and personal – insights of helping teenagers navigate VCE stress.
“Don’t trivialise VCE by saying ‘it’s only an exam or it’s only Year 12’. Don’t tell them it’s not the end of the world if they don’t do well,” says Diane. “For your teenager, this may be the biggest situation they’ve had to deal with, so don’t make light of it.”
“One of the best things you can do as a parent is to be quiet and just listen. Often, if you try and offer a comment or advise, there may be unfavourable reactions and you will get your head bitten off! If you try and share your own similar experiences when you were at school, you’re likely to be told it was different or easier in your day and you have no idea what it’s like. So let your child express their frustrations and feelings and just listen,” adds Diane. The one thing that you can say to them in those moments are those three special words ‘I love you’.
Provide practical support by focusing on basics, says Maria. “Encourage them to sleep well, to go to bed at a reasonable time and to keep up regular exercise routines. Keep the fridge and pantry stocked with healthy snacks, too,” she says.
If your child has been in their room studying for a while, take them in a drink or some fruit and even some chocolate as a treat. Let them know you noticed they’ve been at their desk for some time and you thought they might be hungry or thirsty.
Help your child do some intentional planning. Create a calendar that lists when their VCE assessments and exams are and help them work backwards and plan what they need to do each week or day to be prepared for those dates.
“At this time of the year, teenagers can start experiencing automatic negative self-talk. If you hear them starting to talk negatively about their efforts and expectations for exams, help them counter that by reminding them what they have done so far to prepare and encourage some self-compassion,” says Maria.
When your child does have a break from study, make sure it’s a time when they can relax. Don’t ask them if they’ve done this or that chore yet. Let them mentally relax and switch off.
Remind them that there will be life beyond VCE. “There will be three or four weeks of exams and during that time, a lot of students won’t go out,” says Diane. “But during moments when your child is taking a break, ask them about what they’re looking forward to doing when exams are done. It helps to remind them that there is an endpoint to VCE and the stress that they might be experiencing right now won’t last forever.”
Enjoy the final moments of celebrations and graduations together and well done to every parent for supporting your child through their educational journey. It will be time for everyone to have a break soon!

Back to Brighton
We recently farewelled our graduating class of Year 12 and we held a special assembly to mark this event. As a School and as a staff, it is with tremendous pride that we contribute to the growth and development of our students and their achievements, successes and accomplishments. It is wonderful to be able to celebrate the graduates’ lives at Haileybury, at the campus where they began.
Melbourne Cup Holiday
I’d like to remind families that Monday, 31 October, is a student-free day and students will not be required at School on this day. Tuesday, 1 November is the Melbourne Cup holiday.

Nairm Marr (Bayside)
Haileybury Castlefield and many of our ELC community reside in Bayside or Nairm Marr in Boonwurrung language, which has a deep connection to Port Phillip Bay (Nairm).
Unfortunately, due to the recent weather conditions we changed the planned Ricketts Point adventure and invited Andrew Wegener, wild life expert to bring nature to us. The children enjoyed the hands-on learning experiences as they discussed the marine habitats, investigated the native and introduced species, and considered the impact of human activity on Nairm. It was a wonderful opportunity to deepen knowledge and understanding of their local beach environment and how sustainable practices are making a difference to the ocean and sea life.
A family outing to the Ricketts Point rock pools would provide an extension to your child’s learning and an opportunity to share their learnt knowledge and a great way to utilise this beautiful local resource.

Out and About
Ivy Aitken, Avigail Batzli and Sara Dutta (all Year 4) took up Jodie McInnes’ maths challenge and rose to the occasion! Their reward was a hot chocolate and catch up in Katrina Manson’s office.
Mrs Manson spoke to the girls about their hard work on their maths and they also asked some great questions. Out in the playground, Year 2 students built their own fairy garden among the bushes. It’s great to see the creative play that happens during recess and lunch.
Our SunSmart terms have kicked off and there has been a sea of sunhats out in the yard and in PE classes. Well done to all students for remembering to look after your skin during the warmer terms!

Term 4 Begins
Spring has brought back some long-awaited sunshine and we were delighted to welcome our students back for Term 4. Seeing our community happy and refreshed from the break is always a wonderful sight. Knowing our students are rewarded with time and rest in the shape of holidays four times a year is a great reminder that this also allows students to feel ready and motivated for all that’s ahead.
Our first assembly was our all-important Culture of Learning Assembly. The Middle School students re-connected with the four stages of our learning cycle: Prepared, Ready, Engaged and Reflective.
We ask our students to live by these principles each day in how they approach their schooling, studies and in the community as a Castlefield student. Our Years 7 and 8 students are using this cycle to prepare for their end of year exams and we wish them all the best for their studies.
Year 6 Camp
Last week our Year 6 girls stepped back in time and ventured off to Ballarat and Bendigo for a four-day camp. This rewarding experience saw the girls immerse themselves in the history of Sovereign Hill where they watched a light show, explored a deep mine, rode old-fashioned trams and stayed in the iconic Kryal Castle.
We cannot underestimate the value of these out-of-class experiences and what they mean for a young person’s development.

Happy Halloween
Please note in your diaries that the Junior School Halloween Disco is on Wednesday, 26 October. Students are encouraged to dress up and have fun in Dickinson Hall where there will be a professional DJ spinning the hits.
We will be inviting parents to coffee mornings again this November so keep an eye out for dates and times.
Finally, a reminder that the Secondhand Uniform Shop is having a 20% off sale this week. It is open on Wednesday from 8.15 am –10.15 am and Thursday from 2.00 pm – 4.00 pm.
As is traditional in China, after 26 days of their first school year our Junior School held a Year One initiation ceremony. It was organised by the Chinese Department, our Year One teachers and the calligraphy staff. The aim of the ceremony was to lead students on to the path of learning and enlightenment. As part of the ceremony, the students performed a traditional dance and recited a famous education oath.
Senior School - Parent/Teacher Interviews
Senior School recently held Parent–Teacher Interviews to provide feedback to parents. Haileybury values the relationships that we build with parents and these interviews are extremely important to ensure parents are kept up to date with how their children are performing and how they can improve.
The online Parent–Teacher Interviews gave parents an opportunity to review the first six weeks of school and for the Year 12 students completing VAT subjects, it was a good chance to review what they need to work on for the November examinations.
Understanding Friendships and Boundaries
Recently, our Haileybury Tianjin psychologists, Mia Su and Shawna Sun, gave two wellbeing workshops to our Years 5 and 6 students. The first part of the workshop focused on Boundaries and students were introduced to the concept of healthy relationships and why boundaries are important in healthy relationships.
The second part of the workshop focused on Friendships and how students can use certain skills to improve their relationships with a wider circle of friends.

Music and the Arts
At City, we love the arts and so our location in the cultural centre of the City of Melbourne is the perfect setting for our students and families. When I speak with parents, one of their biggest regrets is that they didn’t have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument. This is not the case at Haileybury.
A love of music starts in our ELC where, each week, our students are taught music by a specialist teacher. From Prep to Year 4, students continue to be taught music and there are also class choirs.
This term we will be entertained by every Junior School student at our Sing-Celebration on Monday, 5 December, at 2.00 pm. This will be a chance to hear our sweet songbirds sing their little hearts out.
Our Year 2 students learn a stringed instrument and have the opportunity to continue in the Scrolls program for Years 3 and 4. This term, we have two performances at Keysborough with our other campuses. It is going to be an amazing event!
In Year 5, our students join the band program and move into a new set of instruments from the woodwind and brass families. There is also the opportunity to join ensembles in Middle School that further develop musical skillsets and provide opportunities to perform.
Assemblies are another wonderful opportunity for our students to perform and we are a very respectful and appreciative audience.
By the end of Middle School, our students are well underway in their musical journey with many playing multiple instruments. The long-awaited performance each year is our City vocal, string, band and pipes and drums ensembles and the massed singing at Speech Night. It is a very special occasion when every student from Years 5–8 sings.
Our City students also love expressing themselves in art and this year they have all created pieces that will form our City Art Show. We look forward to welcoming our community to our pop-up City Art Gallery on Thursday, 1 December, from 3.30 pm – 5.00 pm. Seeing their child’s artwork proudly displayed is always a highlight for our families.
There is so much happening in Term 4 so please be aware of the Key Dates on the myHaileybury app and be sure to diarise these wonderful occasions to celebrate with your child.
Speech Night
Parents of Years 5–8 students are reminded that all students will attend Speech Night on Friday, 25 November, at 6.00 pm at Deakin Edge in Federation Square. It is a wonderful celebration of our students’ success across all aspects of our City Middle School. More details will follow closer to the time.

Where Do They Live?
Reception children have had an ongoing interest in bugs and they have been exploring where certain bugs live. The children’s observations of snails and their gradual understanding of why we only see snails when it has been raining has been fascinating.
Further investigations will continue as we develop an understanding of these habitats and an awareness of how we care for our environment. Sustainable practices will continue to be embedded into the program as we look at the effect our actions have on the habitats of different small creatures.
Our ELC families will be spending a lot of time observing bugs in their native habitat at home with their resident young entomologist!
Our Cultural Identity
An emerging interest in the importance of culture has been the focus in Pre-Prep. This has been extended as we share our families’ histories and cultures and some words from different languages.
Children have been given opportunities to share their cultural background with their peers and educators. Conversations will continue as children discover similarities and differences between each other and understand how everyone is different and special.
Junior School
House Arts Incursion
Our Junior School students engaged in a magnificent House Arts event which was hosted by Majeda Beatty, a proud First Nations singer, actress and dancer. All students from Prep–Year 4 participated in Majeda’s immersive performance through song, dance, stories and language.
Majeda wowed the audience and took our students on a journey of Australia’s First Nation Dreaming. They learned about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and heard Majeda’s perspective on being an Indigenous millennial woman.
It was fantastic to see our students learning songs and dances while being exposed to cultural instruments and artifacts including the importance of ochre and the significance of body paint. The students were grateful to work with such a fantastic performer to continue their focus on being ‘outward looking and future focused.’
Scrolls Workshop
Students from all four Melbourne campuses converged upon Haileybury City on Friday, 7 October, for the annual Scrolls Workshop. We love our Arts at City and our Years 3 and 4 Scrolls students filled the Level 9 space with the magnificent sound of their stringed instruments—from violas and cellos to violins and the double bass.
Guided by our superb strings team, led by Head of Junior School Strings, Ms Ho, our musicians rehearsed numerous songs which they will perform at events throughout Term 4. Our students relished the opportunity to collaborate with other students during play time and the Scrolls Workshop.
Middle School
House Athletics Carnival
On Tuesday, 11 October, our Middle School students competed in our annual House Athletics Carnival at Moonee Valley Athletics Track. Students had a wonderful time competing in the many track and field events.
Thank you to our Year 8 House Captains who inspired the House spirit and showed wonderful organisational skills throughout the day.
World Teachers' Day
Friday, 28 October, is World Teachers’ Day and it’s a day when we recognise the contributions of our wonderful Middle School staff. Below is a message from Sean Cunningham and Leah Vom, 2022 Middle School Captains, expressing their gratitude to City teachers.
‘World Teachers’ Day is a chance for us to acknowledge and celebrate the inspiring work that our teachers do every day. At Haileybury City, we are so fortunate to be educated, motivated, and mentored by the most dedicated and caring teachers. Our teachers bring their passion and expertise into every lesson. Thank you for always fostering our development with empathy and kindness. To the wonderful teachers, thank you so much.’

Upcoming Events
Term 4 is off to a flying start with the real buzz of learning and activity around the campus. Already the children are diving into their musical, sporting and academic pursuits.
The HPF City Annual General Meeting is being held on Thursday, 3 November. This is the perfect opportunity to put up your hand and get involved as we will be holding elections for all committee roles where you can make an important contribution to the fundraising and community life of the City campus. All details are available via the myHaileybury app.
Looking a bit further ahead, ‘Up Day’ is not far away. This is when the children meet their new teachers for 2023. The HPF City will be holding a Second-hand Uniform Shop that day to help kit out students in readiness for next year.
As always, we welcome your contributions and ideas. Should you wish to contact us please email hpfcity@haileybury.edu.au
It was a great experience for 16 of our Year 9 students and three of our teaching staff to spend a week in Melbourne recently. This was the first organised student trip from Haileybury Rendall School to Haileybury Melbourne since the start of 2020.
The idea of a Year 9 journey to Melbourne during Term 3 school holidays had been planned for nearly three years but each time it was thwarted by the COVID-19 pandemic. This time, under the leadership and drive of our Head of Middle School, Brendan Evans, we finally made it.
Our students had to nominate to attend and due to the ongoing COVID risks we limited numbers to 16. The timing of the visit meant it was undertaken during the second week of holidays in the Northern Territory but during the first week of Term 4 in Melbourne, so students had the opportunity to attend classes, take part in School activities and still have time to take in some tourist attractions.
Accommodation for the trip was spent partly in a city hotel but a highlight for our students was staying with Year 9 Haileybury families for two nights. We greatly appreciate the generosity of the Melbourne families who hosted our students and helped them enjoy their experience at the Keysborough and City campuses.
Our students had a full tour of the Haileybury City campus — a school like no other that our students have seen. They also enjoyed a guided city walk, a visit to Melbourne Museum and the State Library and a visit to Luna Park in St Kilda. A trip to Phillip Island to witness the penguin parade was memorable and an adventure that cannot be witnessed in the Northern Territory!
At the Keysborough campus our students toured the entire site and visited classes. It was great for some of our students to catch up with Year 9 boys and girls who visited Haileybury Rendall School earlier in the year at the end of their Northern Territory options.
We are very grateful to all the Melbourne students, families and staff who supported this visit and we believe many relationships and connections will continue through to Year 12. We look forward to this activity continuing next year and beyond.

Mental Health Week
Our campus focus last week was about Mental Health and ways we can stay mentally well. There was a music concert, visiting animal farm, a pledge canvas, and many other activities.
Back to Berwick
A highlight of the year for our Year 12 students is their final assembly at Berwick. Some of our students have 'known no other school' and each were presented with a gift from a Prep student. We wish all of our Year 12 students all the very best for the future.
Showing Their Artistic Side
Children and young people from across Victoria can take part in the Young Archie portrait competition. They must choose a significant person in their life and then create a portrait of them on paper.
This year more than 2400 young people took part, and 70 artists were selected as finalists and displayed in a special exhibition.
Two Edrington Middle School students have had their works included in the exhibition. Sunny Wu (Year 5) produced a creative portrait of her dad using collage and watercolour painting techniques. TianiJayasena (Year 8) produced a portrait of her grandfather using acrylic paint on paper. Congratulations to them both.

Our Sunflowers are Growing!
Spring has sprung in the ELC! The Reception classes planted sunflower seeds towards the end of Term 3 and they have now sprouted into seedlings. Children are curious about the inside of a sunflower seed and the germination process and they are using measurement tools and units to measure the growth of the seedlings and plot that on a simple graph each week.
At the moment, Pre-Prep children have a creative focus in their programs. Pre-Prep D children have explored the art form of pointillism. They were encouraged to plan their work first and, as a group, discussed different techniques to create larger or smaller dots on paper depending on how much pressure they applied with their painting tool. After learning about the works of famous artists, children trialed the same techniques in their own paintings.
In Pre-Prep C, children have been inspired by realism in art and by spring blossoms, particularly lavender. They closely observed a lavender plant in bloom and created a detailed painting of it from real life. Realism offers children a starting point and they can then launch themselves into different artistic styles as they grow.

Living and Growing Program
To support our Health Curriculum in 2022, SEA Australia will deliver a program called Living and Growing to Year 4 students. This three-week program is designed to help schools implement particular aspects of the Health Curriculum including the physical, social and emotional changes during puberty.
The approach is age-appropriate, simple, straight forward and sensitive and covers a range of topics:
Basic male and female reproductive anatomy
Personal safety and body safety rules
What it means to be in a family
Introduction to changes of puberty.
Our Year 4 parents are invited to attend an information session on Wednesday, 19 October, at 7.00 pm via Zoom.
Middle School
A Busy Term Ahead
The Middle School students have had a busy start to the final term of the year.
Our Year 6 girls had a fantastic time on camp in Ballarat and Bendigo. They enjoyed exploring Sovereign Hill, sifting for gold, visiting local wildlife and venturing into mine shafts. A highlight was AURA, an immersive theatre experience at night that follows the journey of gold from its creation to the present day.
The Years 5 and 6 Middle School play will be performed next week and the students are busily rehearsing. Fairy Tale Misfits is sure to be a crowd-pleaser with students of all ages, so be sure to come along. Tickets are still available through the myHaileybury app.
The Girls School has officially launched their sustainability initiative, led by our Captain, Isabelle Tomah (Year 8). A planter box has been built for each year level and the girls began planting everything from flowers to strawberries and even some basil! We look forward to watching these grow over the spring.
A reminder that the two-week transition period for uniform has ended and all students are now required to be in full summer uniform, with hats compulsory at recess and lunch.

JS Footy Colours Day
Junior School recently enjoyed Footy Colours Day. Students could wear their favourite sporting colours and enjoy the excitement of this annual event.
Each year level enjoyed an AFL Football Clinic with some AFLW and AFL stars! The Junior School welcomed Bradley Hill from St Kilda, Luke Cleary from the Western Bulldogs, Eliza James from Collingwood and Charlotte Taylor from Collingwood.
On Fisher Oval, the students practised their hand balling and kicking and finished each skills session with set shots on goal and some Q & A time. Each Year level went into a raffle to win a football signed by our wonderful guests and the lucky recipients were over the moon
Year 3 Camp
Excited Year 3 students attended their first camp at Forest Edge. Although the weather was a bit drizzly, they all had a lot of fun with activities including the flying fox, low ropes, crate climb and archery.
Students enjoyed relaxing in their cabins with friends and spending quality time together outside on the trampoline and in the soccer dome. During the evenings, they took part in a trivia competition and enjoyed a popcorn movie night.
Camp taught them a lot about teamwork, persistence and resilience and Newlands students established many new friendships with students from the Edrington campus. They are now eagerly awaiting their next camp to Portsea in Year 4.

Volunteering is fun! We would love to hear from you if you are able to volunteer in the HPFK Uniform Shop. It’s a great way to connect with your community, meet new people and it enables us to provide this wonderful service for our families.
Haileybury HPFK Facebook Page
We did it! We reached 1,000 Haileybury HPFK Facebook Group members!
Our new target is now 1,100. If you would like to connect with our community, please join our Facebook page.
I hope that the time away from classes has given students an opportunity to get some well-earned rest and to spend some time on examination preparation.
Revision sessions have been running throughout the holidays and were planned in a way that students could meet their individual needs to revise and have some time away from screens.
The last few days for Year 12 students are often filled with mixed emotions. Excitement at beginning life away from school have to be contained by a strong commitment to finishing the year well and preparing for examinations.
All staff have only positive things to say about the way our Year 12s have persevered during the last three years, and they have earned the life-long admiration of all who have worked with them.
My best wishes and sincere thanks to you all.
Australian Pipe Band Championship
Haileybury’s Pipes & Drums Band is supported by a wonderful community of staff, parents and past pipers and drummers. At the recent National Championships in Sydney, Pipe Majors from multiple generations attended to support the Band. Pipes & Drums are part of the great tradition of Haileybury and we thank our past players for their ongoing support.

Haileybury Rendall School Melbourne Visit
Senior School was thrilled to see Year 9 students from Haileybury Rendall School visit Melbourne in the first week of Term 4.
The Pre-Senior staff and students at Keysborough enjoyed hearing about Rendall and participating in a scavenger hunt that included a visit to Senior School office and to Wendall, our Koala that was decorated by the Rendall School ELC students and purchased for Senior School by Keysborough Parents and Friends.
Our thanks to the Heads of Pre-Senior, Samone Davidson and Daniel Bradley, and to our Coordinator of Pre-Senior Options/Expeditions, Marco Cudizio, who organised the Melbourne logistics of the trip.
2022 Victorian School Secondary State Final - Northern Star Chess Tournament
On Wednesday, 5 October, Chloe Fan (Year 9) competed at the 2022 Northern Star Chess State Final. After some very intense and challenging games, Chloe triumphed in her division. She played exceptionally well throughout the day, winning six out of her seven games. Chloe won gold and is the 2022 NSC Victorian Schools State top player in the Years 9–10 Girls Division.
Chloe said the tournament was fun and it gave her the opportunity to meet students from other schools while playing chess. She competed against students of different chess levels, with some matches being quite social while others were more challenging.
Haileybury congratulates Chloe on her tremendous achievement and wishes her and the Senior School Chess team good luck at the Open Secondary School State Final later in October.
If you are a Senior School student interested in playing chess, you can do so through Haileybury’s Curious Minds program. Please contact your campus STEM coordinator for more information.

Get Ready for SpongeBob SquarePants in 2023
Following a student survey and weeks of speculation we are thrilled to announce that next year our Years 9–12 musical will be a Victorian school first. We are putting on the Tony Award-winning SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical!
It is going to be bigger, crazier, funnier and more ridiculous than ever as we bring to life this all-dancing, heart-warming tale of disaster, fake-news and friendship. This show has more roles, more songs and simply more moreness than any Haileybury musical in recent memory!
We are also excited that the Senior Musical will include Year 9 students. So, any student in Years 9–12 (2023) who can commit to the rehearsal and performance season can be part of this major Performing Arts event. Auditions are on Tuesday, 22 November at Keysborough Campus and students are invited to audition for the ensemble or one of the lead roles.
Audition and rehearsal information will be emailed to all current Years 8–11 students on Friday, 14 October, so watch your inbox! Until then, put the Broadway soundtrack on repeat, stream some classic episodes and get into the SpongeBob spirit because this show is going to make a splash.
Rehearsals will be held every Friday from 4.00 pm – 6.30 pm and on Sundays from 10.00 am – 4.00 pm in Keysborough throughout Terms 1 and 2. There will also be holiday rehearsal days in late January and April. Transport is provided from Berwick, Brighton and City for Friday rehearsals.
Grab a Krabby Patty, put on your jet-pack and get ready to hail Patrick Star because Bikini Bottom is coming to Haileybury!
Speculation, anticipation and debate grew over the last few weeks as we revealed the winner of each round before the final announcement.

Music
Our Musicians Continue to Deliver
Events such as Twilight Concert, Annual Concert, Middle School Concerts, Aria Night, Soiree afternoons, Jazz Nights, Junior School String concerts, musicals, VCE performance nights and Chamber in the Chapel provide a diverse array of performance opportunities for students.
Having attended these events, I am proud that each opportunity adds a unique and exciting dimension to the broader music program.
This Sunday we will hold one of the Music Department’s largest concerts, the combined Middle School Spring Concert, in Aikman Hall.
It will feature a staggering 620 students from Years 5–8 and the concert has become so big that it has been divided into two events on the same day. The Concert Band and Percussion ensembles will perform in Concert 1 at 12.00 noon, while the Strings, Choir and Guitar Orchestra will perform at 3.30 pm. We expect more than 1700 parents will attend the day.
Before each concert, students will travel to Keysborough for a final sound-check, rehearsal and staging run-through. This logistical feat has been masterfully coordinated by Roslyn Rodgers, the Music Department’s Performing Arts Coordinator. Many thanks to Ms Rodgers.
My heartfelt thanks also go to the instrumental staff who give their time, expertise and unwavering passion to ensure our concerts provide the highest quality musical experiences.

Success at the Young Archie Competition
Over the past few months, children and young people from across Victoria were invited to participate in the Young Archie portrait competition. Across four age categories, students were asked to choose a person who was significant in their life and to create a portrait of them on paper.
This year more than 2400 young people took part, and 70 artists were selected as finalists and displayed in a special exhibition. Two of our Middle School students from Edrington had their works chosen.
Congratulations to Sunny Wu (Year 5) who produced a creative portrait of her dad using collage and watercolour painting techniques. Congratulations also to TianiJayasena (Year 8) who produced a portrait of her grandfather using acrylic paint on paper.

Haileybury P&D are National Champions
We could not be prouder of each and every P&D member who competed in the Australian Pipe Band Championships on Saturday, 1 October and Sunday, 2 October. The students in our A and B bands have put in a lot of hard work over the past few months and they should be proud of their performance at the championships.
Both bands were the talk of the town with some bands even taking their kids’ bands to meet Haileybury to inspire their pipers and drummers.
On Saturday we performed in the Grade 4A and 4B adult grades. While the B Band didn’t place in Grade 4B where 11 bands competed, they performed amazingly and represented the P&D in fine form.
We are proud to announce that our A Band are now Grade 4A Australian Champions. They competed against nine other bands to win.
Grade 4A
1st: Haileybury Pipes & Drums #1
2nd: Scotch College Pipes & Drums (Melbourne) #1
3rd: Scots College Pipes & Drums (Sydney) #
The A band also won:
Best dressed in Grade 4A
Best march on in Grade 4A
On Sunday, the A and B bands competed in the juvenile contest and gained a credible 3rd place in Novice A and 4th place in Novice B. The band’s performances were definitely winning material, but the judges’ decisions didn’t go our way this time and the results were so close it was almost a three-way tie.
Novice Juvenile A
1st: Scotch College Pipes & Drums (Melbourne) #1
2nd: Scots College Pipes & Drums (Sydney) #1
3rd: Haileybury Pipes & Drums #1
The A band won:
Best march off in Juvi Novice A
Best dressed in Juvi Novice A
Novice Juvenile B
1st: Scotch College Pipes & Drums (Melbourne) #2
2nd: Scots College Pipes & Drums (Sydney) #2
3rd: Ballarat Grammar Pipe Band
4th: Haileybury Pipes & Drums #2
A big thank you to Susan and the Friends of the Pipes & Drums for waking up in the early hours to make breakfast for the students on Saturday and Sunday—this certainly helped them play their very best!
Thank you also to the staff for your exceptional work as always keeping the bands at such a professional level on and off the field. Finally, thank you to Rhonda Allen for joining us on the trip and for your huge help organising 50 pipers and drummers. We couldn’t have done it without you! Until next time, GO HAILEYBURY!
Watch some of the band’s winning performances from the weekend here.
Parents who have children graduating at Haileybury from the end of this year will have a wonderful opportunity to stay connected with Haileybury.
Just as their children can stay engaged through the Old Haileyburians Association, former parents of Haileybury can remain in touch through the Haileybury Society.
Membership to the Haileybury Society is free and open to any parent whose child has graduated from Haileybury and who wishes to remain connected with the School and fellow parents. Membership includes invitations to Society events, School events and sporting fixtures and a range of other membership benefits.
Further information on how parents can join will be available at the valedictory dinners for the Class of 2022, or by contacting Russell Davidson, Director of Development and Alumni Relations.

We are incredibly grateful to Mercedes-Benz Berwick for their sponsorship and to all players for a wonderful day.
Stay tuned for the date of next year’s event which will be held on 22 or 29 September at Southern Golf Club.
Oliver Thompson (Year 11) has just returned from the AIS in Canberra where he had a fantastic experience training with the National Futures squad. Oliver was one of six students selected within the elite group for specialised drag flick training—a special technique used in hockey. The VIS and U21 Australian coach, Jay Stacey, has advised they intend to develop Oliver’s skills further in this area. Very promising.
Haileybury Wins Athletics Victoria Relay Championships
Haileybury was the dominant school at the recent Athletic Victoria Track and Field Relay Championships. The girls teams were clearly the teams to beat. With 37 relay teams entered, Haileybury was impressive as they used this meet to build towards the APS Finals.
Congratulations to the athletes who competed and who achieved numerous close finishes, finals and fourth places. We also won a few medals!

CEO | Principal's Report - Issue 19

Wellbeing - Issue 19

Consent2Go
We have several excursions during the coming weeks. Students can attend these events if consent has been granted by parents. Notification of the requirement of consent comes via email and generally a reminder is also placed on the myHaileybury app. We ask parents to please be prompt with their response.
Early Learning Centre

Early Learning Matters Week
Early Learning Matters Week is celebrated nationally and recognises the importance of high-quality early childhood education for young children.
Over the past five years, Newlands ELC and community leaders have highlighted the significant learning and wellbeing outcomes of children’s involvement in an exemplary play-based, educational program.
During this week we will celebrate some of the wonderful initiatives announced by the Federal and State Governments to support the early childhood sector and young families.
Tim Richardson MP, Parliamentary Secretary for Schools and Parliamentary Secretary for Mental Health and Social Inclusion, will visit Newlands ELC on Tuesday, 18 October at 9.30 am to read to the children and enjoy morning tea.
The Hon Mark Dreyfus KC MP, Attorney-General of Australia, is visiting on Wednesday, 19 October at 11.00 am. He will have morning tea and a discussion time with the children and their educators. We are looking forward to sharing the children’s learning projects and interests with our visitors.
Pre-Prep Transition Statements
Lead Educators are currently writing the Pre-Prep Transition Learning and Development Statements (TLDS) ready for the move to Prep in 2023. This document summarises children’s learning and development, and identifies their individual approaches to learning and their abilities and interests.
The document is passed on to the children’s Prep teachers and helps the teacher to get to know each child and plan appropriate learning and teaching programs. Parents are invited to contribute to the information that is shared and families will receive a copy of the TLDS.
