Haileybury students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 completed their NAPLAN testing last week with the support of their brilliant teachers.
The results will give us a snapshot of the School’s performance in the core areas of literacy and numeracy, and of course, each family will get an understanding of how students are going at this point in time.
Across Australia, more than one million students completed over three million tests, with students in Years 5, 7 and 9 doing all elements of the test online for the first time. This will lead to a quicker turnaround of important data for schools to use as part of their improvement plans.
At Haileybury, deep analysis of NAPLAN data has been an important part of continuous school and teacher improvement since NAPLAN was introduced in 2008. Haileybury has steadily improved NAPLAN results across all levels over the past decade, reflecting stronger core skills in students.
Strengthening of students’ core skills has contributed to brilliant VCE results, which have seen the School lift from 30% of students in the top 10% in the country in 2010 to over 51% for each of the past two years.
In the Years 3 to 5 testing levels the improvement has arisen because of the explicit teaching pedagogy, the focus on phonics for teaching literacy and on mathematics mastery, and the learning of mathematical processes as part of building a deep and sound core knowledge and skill base.
In a very pleasing development for education in Australia, the use of phonics and a maths mastery approach have been strongly embedded in the junior school years of the new Australian national curriculum (Version 9) which was released last Monday.
The use of these evidence-based approaches to lift core skills are long overdue. Hopefully they will help reverse the decline in Australian student performance in core skills and problem solving, as measured by the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA).
Full disclosure at this point — NAPLAN testing and the development of the Australian Curriculum are the responsibility of the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA). I am the Chair of ACARA.

Getting Messy Matters
It is a well-known fact that young children learn best through play and open-ended messy play is one of the best ways to build children’s wellbeing and creativity. It also supports their sensory, cognitive, emotional, physical, social and language development.
Messy play ranges from sensory experiences such as playing with sand, water, mud, foam and slime, to using visual art mediums such as paint, collage, dough and clay. Cooking, gardening and outdoor play are also great ways for children to learn, so you can create and follow a recipe together, plant a seedling, or crunch the autumn leaves as you take a walk.
Messy play is a beautiful way for children to use and extend their imagination and concentration, practice their problem solving and pre-literacy skills and it brings opportunities to explore science and maths concepts. It stimulates the senses as children investigate and discover, and influences how they learn about the world around them.
The Junior School were so thrilled to welcome mums, aunties, nannas and special friends to the classrooms on Friday, 6 May. From pampering sessions to maths games, there was something for everyone. We hope the carefully selected gifts bought at the HFPC Mothers Day stall were well received and kept hidden until Sunday morning!
A Few Reminders
As the cold weather arrives this term, please ensure your child has their jumper for recess and lunch times. Blazers are not to be worn outside at these times.
There are only three places where you may pick up your Junior School child—from their classroom, at the Meeting place outside the Year 1 rooms, or from the roundabout. Junior School students are not permitted to walk outside the school property without a parent, guardian or Middle School sibling.
Smart watches and Space Talk watches should be set to school mode and not used for communication between home and school between 8:30 am and 3:30 pm.
The back playground is not to be played in after school. Please make sure your children are supervised when playing in East Quad after school.

Mothers Day Celebrations
This week the Middle School honoured our wonderful mums. Our Years 5 and 6 parents spent time in the classroom with their boys, challenging them at UNO, drinking cups of tea and spending quality time in their class.
Across the oval, our mums and girls danced away the morning during a high energy ‘Mumba’ session run by Mrs Wittels. Our Years 7 and 8 students filled the hall and there was a packed house of mums in the balcony who were entertained by a comedy act from our Middle School Captains and some heartfelt and genuine student tributes to their mums. What a lovely opportunity to see our community celebrate such important people in our lives. Happy Mothers Day!
Thriving and Changing
In Term 1, our Year 7 Thrive students learnt all about what it means and takes to be Global Changemakers. As a result, they are now working towards raising enough money to build a library for Pokhara School in Nepal. Later this term, the students will hold a series of fundraisers to help raise the funds for this inspiring project.
Our students have also created an online presence to draw attention to this project and there are lots of household items for sale, such as toilet paper, handwash and dishwashing detergents. All these items are 100 per cent sustainable and eco-friendly and profits from every item sold helps fund the Pokhara School project!
Please support our Year 7 Global Changemakers by clicking on the link below and buying some items.
The Mothers Day Luncheon was a huge success. Liz Dawes spoke to us about the Robert Connor Dawes Foundation that supports paediatric brain cancer research and care and there was not a dry eye in the beautiful Encore venue.
As Sarah Cavalier revealed, a Haileybury Castlefield team has been organised for families to participate in Connor’s Run this year. Please click on the link to make a donation or to join the event!
Student leadership is an important part of the Haileybury program and the process in selecting School Captains, Vice Captains, Sport Vice Captains and House Captains is an in-depth process.
Student leaders at Haileybury are given a great opportunity to build their leadership, communication and advocacy skills, and to develop their ability to work within a team, foster confidence, serve others and form relationships with their peers.
The Head of Year 12 and Student Leadership selection process began this week with students preparing a three-minute video speech, participating in a formal panel interview, preparing a written application and undergoing an election process. We will announce the Haileybury student leaders next month.
Junior School Gardening Project
I had the pleasure of joining our primary school students for their Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) garden project last week. Under the direction of Barbara Zhu and with the help of our school gardeners, the students have designed and built a food garden to grow vegetables for the summer. The project is now in its third year and is an important part of our STEM curriculum.
UK University Pathways and University Workshop
Haileybury’s Deputy Principal (Education Research and International) Dr Stephan Muller held an online workshop for Senior School students that focused on the critical skills needed in applying to UK universities. Dr Muller discussed the types of references that students will need, how to prepare for interviews and he outlined how to write a good personal letter. Dr Muller will follow up this online workshop with individual sessions to help students with their applications over the next few months.
Mother's Day
Haileybury students were unable to enjoy their usual Mother's Day activities due to the pandemic restrictions, however, this did not stop them from showing the immense love and appreciation they feel for their mothers. This year, students and staff shared creative ideas and brainstormed different activities to carry out on Mother's Day, such as video messages, arts and crafts and sharing stories.
Activity and Sports Day
During the past few weekends, all sub-schools have organised activity and sports days to help students relax while they have been under closed management and unable to go home because of COVID restrictions. Students have been performing songs and dancing, taking part in science experiments, playing basketball and table tennis and watching the latest movies on the big screen.

Celebrating Our Mothers and Significant Women
Mothers and significant women enjoyed a variety of events and spent time with their children and young people at our City campus. I thank the Heads of School for organising the wonderful activities and thank you also to our Middle School student leaders who led the Middle School ‘Crafternoon’ Tea.
It was heartbreaking to see photos of the piles of library books that had to be thrown away after the Lismore floods. Thousands of books were lost.
Our Teacher Librarian, Allie Kuhne, visited Lismore during the school holidays and identified a primary school that was flooded twice and that would now benefit from our kind hearts and sharp minds.
The school’s staff were providing food, clothing and support to their families and now they are looking to rebuild their library and equip students with stationery. So, we aim to ‘MAY-ke a difference’ this May and encourage our community to be generous in supporting our book and stationery drive and to share the love of reading with our fellow students in Lismore.

Discovering the Beauty of Nature Together
It was wonderful to see the ELC alive with activity for our Mothers and Special Friends morning.
After carefully decorating their pots, Reception and Pre-Preps enjoyed planting a specially chosen flower with their mother or special friend to bring a little colour from the ELC into each home. They were all very excited to share their interests and knowledge in caring for the land and to make such a meaningful keepsake to celebrate Mothers Day.
Speech and Language Development
Families in the ELC came together virtually to attend our recent Speech and Language Parent Information Session with Julie Liptak. Julie gave some wonderful insights into ways in which we can support language development at home.
From the benefits of crunchy and chewy food in developing mouth muscles to encouraging discussion and vocabulary development using board games, the session provided practical and useful tips for all.
For families who were unable to attend, the slides from this session have been provided via our Moments app.

Lismore Book and Stationery Drive
At our recent Junior School
Assembly, our Social Justice Captain, Sophie
Hallam (Year 4), showed an image of the flood-affected Lismore Library.
Sophie talked about how Lismore South Public School has lost all its books and
stationery and promoted our Book and Stationery Drive that will run throughout
May.
Our Haileybury City families have responded in an emphatic
manner, with a large number of books purchased at the Book Fair organised by
Allie Kuhne. In addition to this, students have brought in an impressive amount
of brand new stationery to donate thus far. We are proud of the way our
community is getting behind this great cause and showing empathy for Lismore
South Public School.
Cross Country
Congratulations to all of our
Junior School students for eagerly participating in our Junior School Cross
Country at Flagstaff Gardens. On a beautiful sunny Autumn morning, all of our
students made their way around the course in earnest, spurred on by the large
crowd of parents and supporters. Well done to Newton House for claiming the
House Cross Country Cup and to all students and staff who made this a wonderful
event.
Middle School
Term 2 is in full swing with students enjoying extra-curricular opportunities and chances to get fit and active. At City campus, Middle School students can access facilities at Flagstaff, Level 1, Keysborough Campus and Inside Out court. It has been fantastic to see our students embracing all that is offered to them.
Netfit
As part of our Years 5 and 6 Netball training, we use the Netfit program, which is an enjoyable and holistic community approach to netball that focuses on fitness skills and coaching.
Netfit continues through to the Senior Netball teams and is a great introduction to the sport. It runs at our Inside Out court which is also a wonderful facility to host the Vixen players.
Dance and Aerobics Night Success
Our Aerobics and Dance teams presented their routines to a full house at the Drum Theatre on Tuesday, 3 May. Our City teams worked hard training after school and at lunchtimes and we are so proud of everyone involved and how far they have come since the start of the year.
We wish all competitors luck in the upcoming regional competitions. Special thanks to Carolyn Mansour, Christine Stephenson, Catherine McNamara and all our dance and aerobics coaches. It was a very strong team effort.

New Boarding House Broadens Our Horizons
This week, the new Boarding House at Haileybury Rendall School was transferred to our possession and became our newest school asset.
The facility was commissioned and funded with the Government as part of a 2018 agreement with Haileybury when the School took over from the previous Kormilda College institution. After years of planning and design, it has finally become a reality.
We already have over 90 boarders at our School, with the vast majority being Indigenous students from remote communities who are in Years 7 to 12. They reside in either Gumimba (boys) or Dewarra (girls).
The new facility will be open to international boarders from across south-east Asia and to domestic boarders from northern Australia who might otherwise travel south to boarding schools in Melbourne, Adelaide or Perth.
We will also welcome boarders from Melbourne who wish to enjoy a unique Haileybury VCE experience in the most beautiful part of Australia. Places will be available in the Secondary School for the start of 2023.
With the opening of the new 60-bed facility we have begun showcasing Haileybury Rendall School to the rest of the world. As we all know, Darwin is a great place to live and attend school. The attraction of the Northern Territory, closeness to Asia, and our reputation for providing excellent academic results via the VCE and excellent ATAR scores should generate great interest. Our extra-curricular programs and broad range of activities also deliver an all-round educational package.
Our School will be enhanced and enriched by motivated and determined students from across the globe who will benefit from our great teachers, robust learning programs and our welcoming community. Our projection of an increased number of students in the Senior School will also allow us to provide more subject choices and options for all.
We look forward to further celebrating our successes on the global stage.
Congratulations to Pearl Hodson (Year 7), who recently competed in the Victorian Interschool Equestrian State Championships. Pearl competed in several events and came first in the Combined Training event, which includes dressage and show jumping. She will now head to Sydney in August to represent Victoria in the National Championships. Congratulations Pearl and we all wish you well!
Congratulations also to Matisse Alessio (Year 5) who was recently awarded the School Sports Victoria Award for her achievements in swimming. She received her award from Australian Olympians Anabelle Smith and Col Pearse. What a wonderful achievement!
Mothers Day Celebrations
The Edrington mothers loved every minute of campus celebrations last week, including spending time in classrooms, a morning tea and a breakfast. Thank you to everyone who attended—your children were so happy to share this time with you. A very big thank you to the HPFE for their wonderful work running the Mothers Day stalls and for providing such a beautiful array of gifts for the children to purchase. Your willingness to volunteer, and contribute to our campus, is very much appreciated.
Well done to all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 for trying their very best during NAPLAN assessments. We look forward to receiving the results and using this information to continue to enhance the learning of our students.
Parent Cyber Safety Webinar
Junior School parents are warmly invited to attend an online webinar about Cyber Safety on Wednesday, 18 May. Details and a registration link can be found below.
Edrington’s ELC is continuing its journey towards more sustainable practices. This journey began with ‘The Seeds of Sustainability’ project in 2021 that involves educators, families, children and the wider school community.
Our School has an amazing natural space that includes the creek, large and established trees, green spaces and, more recently, the beehive program. Children gain a better understanding of how to look after our amazing natural resources by being part of this program that values and explores sustainability.
We have ‘Nude Food’ days each week where minimal packaging is brought to school in children’s lunch boxes and children visit the beehives to see the cycle of ‘bee-life’. Children are encouraged to learn about what items can be recycled and this flows on to supporting families to recycle at home.
We are also currently setting up a collection point for families to contribute resources from their homes, gardens and workplaces, so we can incorporate the concept of repurposing and recycling in to the children’s creative ventures.
We will further develop our understanding over coming months and we welcome any ideas families have to share on this important journey!

Year 4s Lead with their Heart
Our Year 4 students were involved in a leadership session that explored what it takes to be a respectful, courageous and positive leader in the community. They worked on building confidence and developing their skills to become an effective leader and to lead with their heart. A range of activities put our young people out of their comfort zone so they could reflect on their strengths.
Leading with your heart means:
Helpful – looking out for everyday actions that enrich the lives of others Energetic – promoting and sharing positive energy Active and Aware – becoming more aware of personal strengths and how they can be used to take positive action as a leader Resilient – the importance of having the courage to try new things and learning to respond positively to challenging or difficult situations Team player – the importance of working with others in an encouraging and supportive environment.

Middle School Examinations
Years 7 and 8 students will complete their end of Semester 1 examinations from Friday, 20 May, to Monday, 23 May. The exam timetable has been sent home and we wish our students well as they prepare and revise.
It has been pleasing to see the commitment and initiative of the Year 8 students as they work towards their second examination period while Year 7 students will sit their first examination on Friday, 20 May, to complete their studies in geography. Staff are working hard to teach students about the most efficient and effective ways to prepare for and sit examinations.

Hello Edrington! It’s cold outside…but not in the Pavilion! It’s Winter Warmers 2022. If you haven’t already got your tickets, get on to it quickly. You do not want to miss it because we can only host 120 people in this space and Dale will wave his magic wand to transform the Pavilion for 1 night only. There will be food, drinks, an amazing band and great company.
We would also like to say a huge thank you to our amazing Mothers Day stall volunteers: Erin, Ella, Kate, Jenelle, Joyce and Shama. We couldn’t have done it without you. It was a full-on, fast paced and fun morning.
We also donated a huge hamper of goodies for the Middle School Mothers Day breakfast. We hope you enjoyed your prize!
Exciting new work began at Newlands during the school holidays. The Gadsden Pavilion (Fisher Oval changing rooms) was demolished so a new pavilion can be constructed this year.
The new Gadsden Pavilion will be a double storey construction with new changing rooms, storage facilities, conditioning areas, offices, classrooms, function space and kitchen facilities. The expected completion date is the end of Term 1, 2023.
During this construction period every effort has been undertaken to minimise impact on the school community. Until further notice and during the renovation period, Middle School students can wear their full sports uniform (tracksuit) to and from School on the days they participate in Sport and Physical Education.
I will keep you updated on the progress of this project throughout the year.
James and the Giant Peach
Tickets are still available for the Newlands Middle School play which is Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach. Performances are on Wednesday, 18 May, and Thursday, 19 May.
Our Junior and Middle Schools enjoyed the Touch of Blue fundraising event that raised money and awareness for two very important charities. The Junior School’s funds went towards the Red Cross Flood Appeal that is supporting families devastated by the NSW and Queensland floods. The Middle School supported Beyond Blue which advocates for mental health.
Students were invited to dress in casual clothes with ‘a touch of blue’ for the two charities and made a gold coin donation. Middle School Kemp captains organised a Lolly Guessing Jar and HPFK organised a delicious BBQ that was well received by students and staff. It was wonderful to see the Newlands community working together to support this charitable cause.
Thank you to everyone involved for your support, generosity and commitment to ensuring we continue our Global Outreach and Social Justice initiatives with such success.
ELC children and educators will welcome Jaeden Williams from Bunjils Biik to the ELC during Reconciliation Week, which begins on Friday, 27 May.
Jaeden will involve the children in a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony, teach the children Boonwurrung Acknowledgements, introduce them to Boonwurrung language, culture and history and invite them to join in an interactive role-play of the Creation Story.
The children will ‘Wear a Touch of Yellow’ during Reconciliation Week and can donate a gold coin to Children’s Ground, an organisation that supports aboriginal children in their community and focuses on First Nations language and culture while incorporating western literacy and numeracy. Haileybury has an ongoing relationship with Children’s Ground and supports their important work with First Nations People.
ELC Mid-Year Music Concert
The ELC children are looking forward to presenting their Mid-Year Music Concert in early June. Details of individual concert days and times will be sent to families through Moments. Term 2 Swimming Lessons Wrap Up
Years 1, 2 and 4 students enjoyed their swimming lessons at the Grenda Aquatic Centre. They were assessed on their abilities and enjoyed learning new strokes and techniques with their peers. It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces as new skills were learnt and friendships were formed. The program concluded with a water safety lesson where students learnt about survival skills in the water.
Preps and Year 3s will have their turn in the pool early in Term 4.
Welcome to Newlands, Hordii
At the beginning of Term 2, Newlands Junior School was very excited to welcome Hordii Blinov to Haileybury. Hordii travelled from the Ukraine to Melbourne with his mother after his hometown of Kharkiv was heavily affected by recent global events.
The Weijers family of Nikolas Weijers (Year 3) extended an invitation to Hordii and his mother to stay with the them once they arrived in Melbourne.
With the help of Nikolas, Hordii has settled into the Australian culture and local customs. During the holidays he began learning English and playing his favourite sport of soccer. 3G are thrilled to have a new student and to be able to get to know Hordii. They have also enjoyed teaching him how to play Aussie Rules during lunchtimes.
We extend a warm welcome to Hordii and his mother, Iryna.

Junior School Parent Webinar
As part of the Respectful Relationships and Consent Program, we invite all parents to join the next webinar ‘Learning, connecting and Playing Safely Online'.
The annual Newlands Mothers Day Breakfast is always a wonderful event. We welcomed mothers and their children from Years 5 to 8 to join us in celebrating the wonderful women in our worlds.
This year’s guest speaker was Alice Pung OAM who is a writer, editor and lawyer. She spoke to the guests about her own mum who was a Cambodian refugee. She was illiterate but did everything she could to provide for her four children and ensure their education. Alice discussed how her mother’s experience shaped those of her children.
This was followed by brilliant music performances by our Middle School musicians and a stunning photo montage of all the mums and their children. There was not a dry eye in the house!
Jaslyn Wong (Year 8) has achieved all four levels of the Compass Award that begins in Year 5 and finishes in Year 8. The Compass Award is offered to all Middle School students and is a self-motivated program that is guided by mentors.
By completing the award, Jaslyn has learnt new skills, assisted people in need, explored new environments and learnt to be more independent by developing her leadership skills.
We hope Jaslyn now continues to the Duke of Edinburgh Award, a leading award program for young people aged 14 to 24 years.
Jaslyn Wong’s Reflection on Compass
Completing Levels 1 to 4 of the Compass Award over the past few years has been a rewarding and exciting experience. Throughout my Compass Award journey, I have grown as a person and also had the opportunity to experience new things.
I have developed many skills through activities from cooking, hiking, beekeeping and being a junior zookeeper for a day to collaborating with others as a Kids Church Leader and as part of the Australian Girls Choir.
Despite the lockdown, I was able to improve my fitness and wellbeing through the physical activity component and by setting goals of walking and running in my neighbourhood.
One of my highlights was in the volunteering component of the Compass Award when I decided that I wanted to use my skills to help others. My goal was to raise $500 to support the Bush Fire Appeal by playing in a small group strings ensemble. Amazingly, we exceeded this goal and raised over $900.
I was humbled by the opportunity to give back to people in need while using my musical skills and collaborating as an ensemble to bless others with music.
Overall, the Compass Award program was a great opportunity to learn more about myself and to develop my confidence in many different areas. I will take all these skills into the future. I would strongly recommend every student consider participating in this program.
In Term 1, our Year 7 Thrive students learnt all about what it means to be Global Changemakers. Now our Year 7 students are working towards raising enough money to build a library for Pokhara School in Nepal. Later this term, students will hold a series of fundraisers to raise funds for this inspiring project.

Recently, Year 7 student, Matty Milias, was presented with a Victorian School Sports Award 2021 for Athletics. This was in recognition for his outstanding achievements at state and national level. The presentation ceremony was held in the Glasshouse at Melbourne Olympic Park where all the athletes received their awards from two Olympians.
Matty has been ranked first in long jump, 200m and combined events at national and state levels and second at nationals for the 100 metres. He is well respected at school and in athletic circles for his sportsmanship, achievements and confident demeanour.

Thank You to our HPFK Volunteers
A big thank you to all our fabulous HPFK volunteers who took time out of their busy schedules to assist with the best ever Mothers Day stall and the ‘Touch of Blue’ Beyond Blue and Flood Relief Fundraiser BBQ. These successful events would not be able to run without each and every one of you.
Save the Luncheon Date
The HPFK Luncheon will be held on Friday, 27 May, and will support Feel the Magic. This Australian charity provides early intervention grief education programs for kids experiencing pain and isolation after the death of a parent, guardian or sibling. Please put this date in your diary.
Haileybury HPFK Facebook Page
This year our target is to reach 1,000 Haileybury HPFK Facebook Group members. If you would like to connect with our community, please join our Facebook page.
Congratulations to Chiara Maiorino (Year 12) who was selected by Dingley Rotary Club to present the Anzac Day Address at the Dawn Service this year. Chiara’s moving speech titled ‘1919’ captured the spirit of the Anzacs through the stories of World War I soldiers from the local area, highlighting their sacrifices as well as their enduring legacy of freedom.
Haileybury Dance and Aerobics Display
On the evening of Tuesday, 3 May, approximately 220 Haileybury students from Years 5 to 12 and from across our four Melbourne campuses, performed their dance and aerobics routines to a sold-out crowd at The Drum Theatre in Dandenong. For many, it was their first appearance on stage and, understandably, they were just a little nervous.
This is the only opportunity for audiences to enjoy our dance and aerobics competitors at the one venue, as competitions are usually held on different days. Display Night provides a wonderful chance to see the progression students make from starting out in Year 5 to the amazingly technical routines of our Senior School students.
As one parent later emailed: ‘I had family with me who could not believe they were all students! The school was done proud last night.’
Subject Selection
This term, Years 9, 10 and 11 students will begin the subject selection process. The Information Evening for our Pre-Seniors was held on Tuesday, 3 May, and a copy of the recording can be found on myHaileybury.
The Subject Expo will be held on Tuesday, 17 May, online with details to be provided. It will give students and parents access to material that will enable everyone to make good subject choices.
It may also help to visit the VTAC website (the central admissions centre for most undergraduate university and TAFE courses) and the VCAA website. The VCAA sets guidelines for what Prep to Year 12 students learn in Victorian schools.
If needed, you can make an appointment with one of our Careers Advisers. Your child’s Head of House or Head of Pre-Senior can help you do this.
Meaningful May
The beginning of a new term brings with it a fresh start and the opportunity to re-set and review priorities and habits across all areas, including wellbeing. Many Senior School students will have re-adjusted to life after lengthy lockdowns. However, for some students, the re-adjustment may still present challenges and they may require support and guidance to adjust.
A great way to reflect on your wellbeing and that of your young person, as well as to start new habits, is to try some ideas from the Meaningful May Calendar that encourage kindness and promote a calmer mind.
Remember, if you need any extra support, please reach out to pastoral care staff at School, including your child’s Tutor or Head of House. We also have amazing psychologists at every campus who are available at school to support your child.
Other additional contacts for support outside of school include:

Engaging Adolescents Program
Haileybury Psychologists are again offering the Engaging Adolescents™ Program to our Year 9 parent community. The online program will be delivered by Neringa Smith (Psychologist at Keysborough and City) and Elicia Clarke (Psychologist at Brighton).
Engaging Adolescents is a three‐session (two hours per session) course for parents and carers of teenagers and pre-teens. Parenting adolescents can be challenging and regularly leaves parents struggling with what to do. Drawing on psychologist Michael Hawton’s 30 years of experience, Engaging Adolescents is a practical guide to help parents better understand their teen and to steer them through the challenging times with confidence.
It provides practical ideas on preparing for, and holding, tough conversations, fostering a stronger relationship with teenagers and supporting them to manage their own behaviour and emotional reactions.
If you would like to attend this program, please register via the TryBooking link that will be sent out via the myHaileybury app.
Young People and Sexuality
Readily available and aggressively marketed online, exposure to hardcore pornography is now mainstream. For some young people, porn has become a default sex educator and this has serious implications for a young person’s capacity to negotiate free and full consent and for mutual respect, sexual health and gender equality.
Young people need support to navigate respectful, consenting and safe sexuality and relationships. Pornography is a challenging topic, but it is one we cannot afford to ignore.
In this webinar session, Maree Crabbe, Director of the Australian violence prevention project, It’s time we talked, will outline how pornography is impacting young people and what schools and parents can do to address it. Details on how to join the webinar today, 16 May, at 7.00 pm are on the myHaileybury app.
Multilingual Karaoke Event takes the Quad by Storm
Accompanied by cheery weather and warm sun, the Keysborough Senior School Quad hosted the Annual Multilingual Karaoke Competition on Thursday, 5 May.
Students from different campuses took park and they all confidently performed beautiful songs in a variety of languages. Amazing delicacies were also provided including bubble tea, bento boxes and croissants.
The melodies delivered so passionately by the singers were met with great applause and cheer as duos, groups and soloists lit up the stage. The competition also provided an opportunity to experience the musical aspects of many cultures.
Well done to everyone involved!
Senior School Sport Expectations
The Sport program at Haileybury is integral to developing the well-rounded Haileyburian student and team success is dependent on all students attending Tuesday training and Saturday competition. As such, all students are expected to train on Tuesday afternoons during sport time.
It is a condition of enrolment in the Senior School that all students participate in compulsory Saturday competition. Should there be a valid and genuine reason for being unavailable, then notification—as with all absences—must be verified by a parent and is expected to be received well in advance.
On the very rare occasions that a student becomes ill on a Friday night or Saturday morning, parents need to communicate this message to their child’s coach via email and follow up with a medical certificate emailed to the relevant Head of Sport. Coaches’ emails are available at the top of your child’s team sheet.
To reiterate our school policy, should your child need to leave school for an appointment and miss Tuesday sport training, a medical certificate will need to be emailed to the relevant Head of Sport the following day. Haileybury asks that students and parents avoid making appointments on Tuesday afternoons during sport training. Parents of students who are at school and unable to train must contact the school, prior to training commencing, explaining the circumstances.
The Haileybury Sports Department values your support of the programs that run on Tuesday afternoons and on Saturday mornings.

Congratulations to the cast, crew and creative team of Roald Dahl’s Matilda: The Musical.
Over the past 11 weeks, the Matilda company and VCE Theatre Studies class have been working on presenting this multi-award-winning musical. The production ran over four performances, culminating in a family-friendly matinee show.
The dedication to storytelling, the understanding of style and the sheer hard work and commitment shown by the team were impressive. This was an imaginative, surprising and delightful production led wonderfully by the Drama and Music Captains: Sam Prins, Milly Sime,Emily Peatman, Kim Petley, Riley Allan, Michael Sun and Emily Wakeling.
My personal thanks also to the staff who provided such rich experiences for the cast and crew: Erica D’Angelo, Nicole Smith, Jane Marshall, Matthew Sanderson and Robert Latham.

Music
Thank You to the Grigoryan Brothers
The Haileybury Music Department has a long-standing tradition of securing leading musicians to undertake workshops with our students.
Recently, the internationally renowned classical guitar virtuosos, the Grigoryan Brothers, held guitar workshops and presented a lunchtime concert with our students. Leonard Grigoryan and Gerard Mapstone held a workshop at Newlands with 10 students, while Slava Grigoryan and Sergio Ercole ran a workshop in the Keysborough Chapel with 18 Senior students.
Being able to access these outstanding musicians is somewhat of a coup for Haileybury.
The workshops covered how to stylistically interpret music and adjust when playing for an audience. Performance anxiety and methods of addressing it, like playing to friends and family, adding dynamics and accents to make performances more interesting and much more were discussed. Several students performed items to gain expert advice from Slava or Leonard.
Afterwards, everyone gathered for a lunchtime concert where these fine musicians delighted the audience with several pieces. A highlight was their finale item, This Time.

Beastman Mural
It is an exciting week at Keysborough as the 2022 inaugural Artist-in-Residence, Bradley Eastman, aka ‘Beastman’ has begun installing his enormous dual murals on the Sholto Black Arts Vicinage.
This prolific multi-disciplinary artist conducted workshops with the Units 1 and 2 Studio Arts classes. Bradley also gave an artist talk in the Gallery at lunchtime and discussed the process he undertakes when developing and painting his murals in Australia and internationally.
After scoping out the characteristics of the site and researching murals as an art form, students collaborated with Bradley to establish the parameters for the Haileybury project. Bradley has since refined the design and primed the two-storey brickwork on either side of the Visual Arts building entrance.
Arriving on campus on Monday morning to see the design with its vibrant pops of blue in Beastman’s signature geometric style has sparked much curiosity and anticipation as the mural emerges over the next week. I look forward to presenting the completed project to you in the next edition of Insight.

Pipes & Drums
We Will Remember Them
We were proud of our wonderful staff and students as they participated in the Anzac Day march for the 7th consecutive year. It was, as always, an honour for Haileybury Pipes & Drums to take part. Their performance, respect and solemnity as they represented our school and escorted veterans was simply outstanding.
The band of over 50 pipers and drummers was led by Pipe Sergeant Oliver Perry (Year 12) and Drum Sergeant Shaun Tay (Year 12), joined by Haileybury Colour Bearers, Jazmin Harrop (Year 12) and Michael Sun (Year 12). Walking either side of Drum Major Braya Jade Hanssen (Year 9) they led the band to the Shrine of Remembrance.
Our thanks and acknowledgement go to all staff, students and parents for their teamwork in participating in this most important Anzac Day event.
On Thursday, 11 August 2022 something special is happening at Haileybury.
Haileybury will hold its very first Giving Day that aims to provide a scholarship for a student who would otherwise have no opportunity to attend our School.
The funds raised from the Giving Day will provide a scholarship that will be known as the Haileybury 130 Scholarship
and that will celebrate 130 years of Haileybury. It will be open to a student in Year 7, 9 or 10 to attend any of Haileybury’s Melbourne campuses.
During the 24 hours of Giving Day, our aim is to secure 400 donors from our Old Haileyburians community, and 100 per cent of all funds raised on the day will go to the Haileybury 130 Scholarship. All donations received on the day will also be doubled thanks to the generosity of our Matching Donors.
The Giving Day campaign will run online for 24 hours and there will be a series of events, activations and communications in the months leading up to the day, to raise awareness of the campaign.
Regardless of their size, all donations will contribute to an amazing cause that will change a student’s life forever.
All Giving Day donors will be notified of the first scholarship recipient who will be announced in September 2022 and they will receive regular updates on the student’s progress throughout their time at Haileybury. The student will join Haileybury at the start of the 2023 school year.
All donations to the Haileybury Foundation have a significant impact. For more information on how you can assist, please contact:
After graduating, Sarah Carrier (OH 2012) enrolled in a Bachelor of Arts/Law at Monash University. She completed two years of the course before switching to a Bachelor of Arts/Science.
It was one of the best decisions she has ever made because the switch led to Sarah meeting her partner!
During her degree, Sarah studied abroad and this included learning about the refugee experience in Vietnam and Indonesia and the reconciliation process in post-conflict Rwanda and South Africa.
She completed Honours in Psychology and is currently completing a PhD in Clinical Neuropsychology and hopes to finish – “finally” – later this year.
Sarah’s PhD research focuses on the non-pharmacological management of agitation during the early recovery period following traumatic brain injury. She has published several research papers in this area.
Clinically, Sarah works at Epworth Research as a Project Manager where she conducts cognitive assessments with patients who have sustained an acquired brain injury. After her PhD, Sarah hopes to work as a clinical neuropsychologist and a researcher and she is passionate about supporting people with neurological conditions.
On a personal note, Sarah has kept up her running and triathlon training from her Haileybury days and her proudest achievement so far is completing a Half Ironman earlier this year!
That’s an awesome effort on the study and home front, Sarah!

Oliver Thompson
(Year 11) has been named in the Hockey Australia U18 Futures Squad. He will be one of the selected athletes taking part in a six-part program that includes advice and support on individual athlete performance planning, online technical and tactical sessions, managing a dual career, mental health and wellbeing. Oliver will also join a training camp in Canberra in October.
Athletics Australia National Success
At the start of this month, Sydney hosted the Athletics Australia National Championships. Our Haileybury contingent of ten athletes and two OHA athletes competed in more than 25 events over nine days of intense competition.
The results were impressive with the team winning five gold medals, two silver medals, three bronze medals and three World Junior qualifying performances.
Congratulations to all our athletes and in particular to Amy Bunnage (Year 12) and Luke Gough (Year 11) whose efforts are hopefully enough to earn them Junior World Champ and Oceanic team representative spots.
Ashlee Arendse (Year 11) and Blake Connors (Year 11) won gold and bronze medals respectively at the recent National Diving Championships. This was a particularly challenging event for Blake as a training mishap in the week preceding the event prevented him from training until the day of the Championships.
Cycling for Australia
Dylan Proctor-Parker (Year 12) has been extremely busy over the last couple of weeks. He has competed in no less than three major cycling events in Brisbane: the Australian National Track Championships, Oceania Track Championships, and the Oceania Road Championships. He achieved outstanding results in all three events.
The highlight of Dylan’s busy schedule was being selected to represent Australia, and wearing the Australian jersey, to race the Team Pursuit at the Oceania Track Champs and beating New Zealand to take gold.
Dylan is now in a good position for Australian U19 selection for the World Track Championships in Tel Aviv in August. We wish Dylan all the best.
Campbell Wilson-Moran (Year 9) recently competed in the Australian 2022 Age Swimming Championships in Adelaide. Campbell achieved a gold medal for the 200-metre backstroke, a bronze medal in the 100-metre backstroke, fourth in the 50-metre backstroke, fourth in the 800-metre freestyle, fifth in the 400-metre freestyle, and seventh in the 14/15-year-old Club 4 x 50-metre freestyle relay.
Haileybury was the fastest for the Victorian teams for this event and fourth in the Victorian state relay 13/14-year-old division.

Our students have also established an online presence to draw attention to this project and they have lots of household items for sale, such as toilet paper, handwash and dishwashing detergents. All items are 100 per cent sustainable and eco-friendly and profits help to fund this fantastic project!
Please support our Year 7 Global Changemakers by clicking on the link below and purchasing some items.

Your GP can review your child and offer recommendations for support providers
