It was wonderful to attend all four Melbourne campuses over the past two weeks. I have particularly enjoyed observing our three-year-old ELC to Year 12 classes and it is important that education leaders reflect on the 15-year journey that is a student’s formal school education.
Haileybury’s motto is ‘every student matters every day’. It ensures the focus is on making the most of every lesson every day for every student. The cumulative impact of this is outstanding education outcomes for students.
However, as much as the focus for Haileybury teachers is on every student for every class, the focus on our planning operates across longer times—stretching out to the 15-year student journey.
If we look back 15 years, we can see how important this is.
In 2007, when our current Year 12s were in early learning centres or kindergartens, Apple released the iPhone, which was the first commercial release of a touchscreen, internet-connected phone. This, of course, has had a dramatic impact on the way young people interact with each other and how they access information and engage with learning.
Haileybury’s teaching practice, curriculum and support programs for students have all evolved over that time to meet the needs of students and prepare them for life after school. The development of our Respectful Relationships and Consent Program is an example of the need to continually evolve and adapt to the changing environment in which young people are growing up.
However, as much as we will evolve our programs there are some fundamentals that underpin great education. A focus on developing strong literacy and numeracy skills in the early years is key.
Last week, in our Junior School classes, it was wonderful to observe the brilliant explicit teaching and the ‘I do, we do, you do' approach in action. This approach, coupled with a strong phonics program, embeds reading skills and the development of excellent maths mastery skills.
It is this focus that provides Haileybury students with the skills to develop deeper problem-solving and analytical skills as they move through the School. It is also why Haileybury’s NAPLAN results for reading, writing and comprehension are among the very best in Australia.

Wellbeing
The Importance of Belonging
It’s something that every person needs—to feel a sense of belonging, to be connected to others, and to feel the sense of purpose that comes with being involved in the routines and rituals of daily life.
Haileybury focuses on cultivating belonging and connection every day for students. This happens within the classroom and extends through children’s involvement in a wide range of activities outside the classroom. Families also play a pivotal role in supporting their children to feel a deep and secure connection to the people and places around them.
“When a student feels connected, it brings so many benefits, like contributing towards improved academic performance and enhancing overall wellbeing. Having a sense of belonging may be a foundation of learning and wellbeing and promote confidence, inclusiveness and safety,” says Maria Bailey, Haileybury Director of Counselling Services.
“Being involved in aspects of school life in the classroom or other areas such as sport or arts, celebrating individual differences and building relationships where children feel valued and part of something is very important. School and families can work together to help children develop that essential sense of belonging.”
Here, Maria and Diane Furusho, Haileybury’s Deputy Principal (Student Wellbeing, Respectful Relationships & Consent), share ideas on how parents can help children feel they are valued and that they belong.
For Younger Children
Provide opportunities for children to connect with other children by encouraging playdates.
Describe the positives about school and praise positive behaviour. Say things like ‘It was so great when you shared with your friends today’ or ‘It was kind that you helped your friend today’.
Promote self-esteem by teaching your child to be a good friend.
Arts and craft can be a way of sharing stories about your child’s day and how they belong at school.
Encourage children to name and share their emotions to help build their emotional literacy.
Encourage open questions about your child’s day that show you care. For example, ‘What game did you play today?’ or ‘Who did you sit next to?’ When you ask ‘what, why and how’ questions mixed with care, you help to reinforce that your child belongs in different places and groups.
Encourage your child to develop areas of interest at home and at school, praise their little successes in those areas, and nurture the learning opportunities in the mistakes they make.
Encourage your child to identify someone they can trust emotionally and on whom they can call if they want to talk about something that is concerning them.
For Older Children
As children move through their years at school, peers are important but parents remain important too. So, create formal and informal connection points through sport, going for a walk, driving your child to where they need to be, or regularly sharing a meal together.
Be present when your child wants to talk to you and listen with empathy rather than judgement.
When your child arrives home from school, ask one or two questions like ‘What did you enjoy at school today and why?’ or ‘Were there any challenges—how did you manage that?’ Ask questions that help your child recognise they have been part of something.
Encourage children to get involved in school activities and promote a growth mindset to help develop their skills and interests. Encourage perseverance and persistence, rather than giving up too quickly, and gently remind your child that they signed up for an activity. Creating opportunities to solve problems helps children build sound decision-making skills that benefit them and the people around them.
Be positive when you take your children to school activities, like Saturday sport, and remind them of the fun they will have and the connections they will make when they take part.
If you are concerned that your child doesn’t seem to be involved and connected, contact the school and reach out to a teacher, Head of School, School Psychologist or a member of the Pastoral team.

Meet Our Inspiring School Leaders
Congratulations to all students who nominated for a 2022 leadership position. The qualities of courage, risk-taking, organisation and strong communication were certainly present as the students wrote their nominations and presented at interviews.
Our Junior and Middle Schools have conducted assemblies, with the Junior School inducting their House Captains and the Middle School’s significant leaders also being sworn into office.
Cooper Curley (Year 8) and Spiros Dassios (Year 8) addressed the Middle School Assembly with inspirational speeches and passion for their roles as 2022 Middle School Captains.
We look forward to supporting all our student leaders.

Staying Connected
While we have been unable to have families in the ELC, we have been maintaining connections through our ELC app with photographs, videos, notices, reminders and messages. We hope families have enjoyed hearing about what is happening in the ELC and what their children are exploring.
Thank you to parents for attending our recent Parent Teacher Interviews and for discussing family goals and backgrounds. These support educators in getting to know children and providing the best possible experience for every child.
Welcome to Country
Last week, the ELC children and educators joined in a special Welcome to Country smoking ceremony while learning about our shared land, Boonwurrung country, with proud Yalukit Willam man, Jaedan Williams. Jaeden shared his knowledge, language and connection to Country with us and told us a story of Melbourne’s First People and first language.
Welcoming Jaeden into our ELC community and inviting him to share his culture, continues to develop our understanding and respect for our country’s traditional owners and the importance of caring for the land we live, learn and play on.
Junior School
Safety First
Just a reminder that Junior School children can only be picked up at one of three locations: from their classroom, at the roundabout, or at ‘The Meeting Place’ outside the Year 1 classrooms.
Students are not permitted to wait for siblings in West Quad without a parent present, or to wait outside the gates on Villeroy Street. Staff are on duty at the roundabout and ‘The Meeting Place’ until 3:55 pm each day to look after your children.
Middle School students are asked to collect their brothers and sisters from either location, please.
Taking it Outside!
Taking advantage of the beautiful weather and gorgeous East Quad, 1H students and their teacher, Mr Mitchell Hodgson, took their science lesson outside to see whether items would sink or float. By making predictions and then observations, students were able to put their theories to the test.
‘Metal sinks and rubber floats!’ —Hugo
‘If there is more density it sinks, and if it has low density it floats.’ —Jack
‘All my predictions were correct!’ —Mia
Middle School
Ready to Serve
‘Leadership through service’ is the Middle School leadership mantra and last week our newly elected leaders, elected by staff and peers, were formally inducted into their roles.
The Middle School Leaders display exemplary behaviour and attitude as well as outstanding involvement in the entire school program. They work closely with the Heads of Middle School and the entire student cohort to ensure Castlefield students are safe, challenged and encouraged to achieve their full potential in all areas.
Principal | CEO, Mr Derek Scott, congratulated each leader, awarded them a badge and reminded them that ‘the real work starts now’.
Our leaders have a portfolio, a list of tasks to be achieved and a mentor to assist them on their journey. We wish them well and look forward to getting behind them as they boldly lead our Middle School community into the future.

Haileybury Parents & Friends Castlefield (HPFC)
Our HPFC create an environment and host events that promote community building and friendship raising. The HPFC is about fostering connections amongst parents and creating a strong community spirit—the essence of the Haileybury Castlefield campus.
On Thursday, 10 March, at 6.00 pm the HPFC partners with the Creative Arts team at Castlefield to offer our Year 6 students an opportunity to showcase their skills. The HPFC will provide food and beverages so that families can spend some time connecting with each other.
The myHaileybury app has details of the evenings organised for our Prep, Year 5 and Year 7 families over the coming weeks.
The Senior School Semester 1 Academic Awards Ceremony was held on the first day back at school following our Chinese New Year break. It is a tradition at Haileybury to celebrate the academic success of our students and this was one of those special occasions.
During the ceremony, 112 awards were shared by 72 students from Years 10–12.
Our mid-year awards don’t only commend academic excellence, but those students who have demonstrated great persistence and effort across the semester. This recognition encourages students to continue their endeavours during the second half of the academic year.
Our Academic Excellence Awards recognise the top student in the year for each subject, with High Distinction being awarded to the top 10 per cent of their cohort.
Our Honours Awards recognise General Excellence and we give these in the categories of School Support and Leadership. General Excellence Awards acknowledge students for their wider community citizenship qualities and their dedication and positive contribution to a range of activities in the school and wider community.
School Support General Excellence Awards are presented to students who have made an outstanding contribution to community life, the development of culture and to school events. Leadership General Excellence Awards are awarded to students who have actively pursued and demonstrated outstanding leadership over and above their everyday responsibilities within Senior School.
House Awards
Last week our Head of Welfare, Mrs Linda Liu, and her Welfare team organised a wonderful Semester House Awards Ceremony. Throughout Semester 1, Purple (Zi De) House, Gold (Jin Shi) House, Blue (Lan Yue) House and Green (Lv Zhu) House competed in sports and academic competitions, such as the Athletics Carnival, soccer and basketball, spelling, debating and public speaking competitions.
The House Awards also recognised students who contributed above and beyond to their house through specially made house ties. Congratulations to all staff and students for their wonderful achievement in the first half of the year. I look forward to crowning the House Champions at the end of the year.
STEM Exhibition
Primary, Middle and Senior School attended the Haileybury STEM Exhibition that displayed the wonderful STEM Programs on offer to all students. Our Head of STEM, Mrs Summer Zhang, and her coordinators proudly demonstrated all the activities students can participate in during the semester, with some of the most popular choices being astronomy, aerial photography, 3D printing, Lego engineering and mini-experiments.

Sharing the Love
Outward Looking and Future Focused
Our Senior School students shared the love on Valentine’s Day by selling roses to staff and students from our friends at Queen Street Flowers. There was much love spread around the campus and the students’ kind hearts and sharp minds determined that the Smith Family was a worthy charity for the proceeds raised.
The Smith Family is an independent children’s charity helping disadvantaged Australian children to get the most out of their education, so they can create better futures for themselves. So, they were a perfect partner for our goal of being outward looking and future focused. Our Social Justice pillar underpins our desire to raise awareness and to make a difference in the lives of others.
Our staff also enjoyed a pop-up Valentine’s Day Morning Tea where our City Executive team reminded every staff member how much we love and appreciate everything they do every day.
Leaders of the Future
In our recent Junior School Leadership Induction, we were delighted to see our students embracing the idea that leaders aren’t born leaders—they are made. We can all learn leadership skills and, at Haileybury, these start from an early age.
We have leaders in our Early Learning Centre who lead the line and set the example and we have Years 4 and 8 leaders, buddies and our House Captains and Campus Prefects in Senior School. There are also many different portfolios and responsibilities throughout the campus.
Our students in Year 4 are future leaders of their communities and they know the importance of using their kind hearts and sharp minds to make a difference.
The special honour of carrying the City flag is the role of the flag bearer and, this semester, our Junior School flag bearer is Elspeth Paul (Year 4). You can see from her big smile just how proud she is!
Congratulations to all our Captains for Semester 1, 2022.

Thinking of Others in the ELC
An important element of our ELC Program is our Social Thinking and Child Empowerment Curriculum. This curriculum introduces language used to identify emotions, provides tools to help self-regulate emotions, and explicitly teaches skills to support social interactions.
In the early years, children learn through play and their interactions with others, so supporting positive social engagement with peers is crucial in developing confidence, friendships and a sense of belonging.
Reception and Pre-Prep were thrilled to have Julie Liptak, our expert in Social Thinking, introduce some social and emotional concepts to children during a group time session. Julie unpacked concepts such as ‘The Group Plan’, ‘Comfortable and Uncomfortable Thoughts’ and ‘Blue, Green, Yellow and Red Zones’ of emotions. Concepts were introduced in engaging and age-appropriate ways to support children’s interest and develop their understanding
Upcoming Parent Information Session
We are excited to have Julie Liptak host our Parent Information Session via Zoom on Tuesday, 8 March. We invite all families to attend this session that will introduce a shared language and provide ways in which you can support your child with their social and emotional development outside the ELC.

Our Year 4 Leaders Step Up
Our new Year 4 Leaders were inducted at our Inside Out court recently. In addition to our Semester 1 Leaders receiving their coveted badges, they were able to tell staff and parents in the audience how they would be leaders.
Our students focused on how they could display one of the Five Respectful Relationships pillars: Respect, Empathy, Kindness, Trust and Honesty. Some of their fantastic thoughts are below:
“As a House Captain, I will show respect by encouraging and supporting each and every house.”
Leo Oparkcharoen
“As the flag bearer captain, I shall display respect by taking care of the flag at every assembly.”
Elspeth Paul
Our Own ‘Little Tommy’
Our very own Hamilton Binnie Garcia (Year Prep) has been busy juggling his schoolwork with rehearsals for The Who’s Tommy, a musical performed at St Kilda’s Palais Theatre in late February. Hamilton played Little Tommy, lead singer of British band, The Who, in the multi-award-winning rock opera.
We are proud of Hamilton’s performances and the way he embodies our love of the Arts at Haileybury City.
Middle School
Welcoming Back our Wider Community
We have been thrilled to see many of you on site over the past few weeks—firstly, with our Meet and Greet at Inside Out and most recently at our Leaders Induction Assembly. It was wonderful to enjoy a coffee and muffin with parents of our leaders and to enjoy the fabulous Level 10 view.
Incursions Are Under Way
We have started the year with some important messages. Our Year 8 students enjoyed the power of story-telling with Mancave and Enlighten Education and our Years 5 and 7 students took part in CyberSafety workshops.
We encourage parents to talk with their young people about the important things they have learned from these experiences.
Keeping Busy
The start to the Dance and Aerobics year has been a busy one and students are already getting excited about upcoming competitions and routines.
A select group of Year 5 and 6 students also headed to Keysborough for an APS Swimming event and we are incredibly proud of their achievements this early in the year.
Marking International Women’s Day
Preparations are well under way for International Women’s Day on Tuesday, 8 March. We are looking forward to celebrating, reflecting and learning during a series of workshops that all our Middle School Students will participate in tomorrow.
Quality Teaching Research
Haileybury City will take part in an exciting new research project with the University of Newcastle that examines a style of teacher professional development called ‘Quality Teaching Rounds.’
The research will be conducted over Terms 1 and 2 and four of our Mathematics and English teachers, and some of their students, will be invited to participate.
Invitations will be sent out to relevant classes and student participation is entirely voluntary. Haileybury City is proud to take part in research that contributes to quality teaching across Australia.

Haileybury Parents & Friends City (HPF City)
As we reach the Term One halfway mark, we are grateful to our City community for continuing to follow COVID-19 protective health requirements. These include mask wearing in the Basement Car Park at drop-off and pick-up times, hand sanitising and providing proof of vaccination to our Receptionists on Ground Floor prior to entering the school grounds.
Completing Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs) each week is keeping our children and wider school community safe and minimises the risk of spreading the virus.
Our HPF City ‘Rooftop Party’ was a raging success with many parents and carers enjoying the opportunity to meet face-to-face with new and old friends while enjoying a delicious dinner and drinks.
As always, the Rooftop showcased the magnificence of our vertical school as we gazed across Flagstaff Gardens to the City buildings whilst the dark clouds and spots of rain did not deter the festivities.
A big thank you to all our HPF City Representatives and City Campus staff who helped behind the scenes to make this event run seamlessly.
If you would like to be in touch, always feel free to email hpfcity@haileybury.vic.edu.au. We welcome your feedback and suggestions.
Enjoy the upcoming long weekend.

Our New Buildings Are Coming to Life
As demand for enrolments increases and our total cohort numbers approach 900 students, new facilities are coming online at Haileybury Rendall School.
As part of our ongoing master-planning and campus development, and after a detailed renovation in Term 4 last year, it is wonderful to see staff and students enjoying teaching and learning in our newest complex.
Building 8 had lain dormant and dilapidated since Haileybury Rendall School opened its doors at the start of 2018. The new building features 12 learning spaces, two staff rooms and boys and girls change rooms and toilets. The building has prime views towards the city and looks out over Hidden Valley Raceway.
Each classroom features the latest technology and WiFi settings and the air-conditioning is clean and cooling!
Years 7–12 Humanities classes and Years 10–12 VCAL classes regularly occur in the new facility. Our Senior School House Tutor Groups are based in the new building and I know our older students are excited that their special new lockers will be installed tomorrow and ready to use from Monday.
Our next ‘reveal’ will be the amazing International Boarding House, which should be ready for the School to use in early March. This 60-bed residence was provided to HRS as part of Haileybury’s initial negotiation to take over Kormilda College and once the COVID pandemic eases we will welcome students into our Senior School from across South-East Asia.
More excitement lies ahead as we continue our drive to be the best school in Northern Australia.

Founders Day Celebrations
Edrington Middle School students enjoyed hearing from former Haileybury student, Mr Chris Schreurs, at the recent Founders Day Assembly. Chris graduated in 1997 and was interviewed by his son, Oliver Schreurs, (Year 7).
We were also fortunate to have Vice Principal, Mr Scott Doran, in attendance and Chris let us know that Scott had been one of his teachers. Chris offered a wonderful insight into where we have come from as a campus and, although many things have changed at Edrington, the essence of who we are has remained the same.
Edrington Picnic
We invite families to our Edrington Picnic on Friday, 1 April, from 3.30 pm to 6.30 pm. ELC, Junior and Middle School families are all welcome to attend. There will be food trucks, entertainment, rides and more. More details on the myHaileybury app.
Thank you to the HPFE
There was much appreciation for our HPFE (Haileybury Parent and Friends Edrington) parent helpers as they made pancakes for Shrove Tuesday for the ELC, Junior School and Middle School students. Thank you to all parents who assisted on the day.

Literacy in the ELC
“The fire of literacy is created by the emotional sparks between a child, a book and the person reading”
Mem Fox
The ELC Literacy Program began on day one of Term 1 and is in full swing. In Reception, the current focus is on books, comprehension, learning and recalling simple songs and rhymes. Reading stories daily promotes a love of literacy and develops children’s language skills and increases vocabulary, grammar and punctuation.
Seeing text in books and signs in their environment develops knowledge of letters and their formations. Comprehension is integral in developing children’s understanding of text and meaning and simple questions using What? How? Who? and When? direct children’s thinking and build their ability to interpret what they are reading.
Children will also be looking at letters from the alphabet and staff will be working with them to assess their existing knowledge of letters and sounds.
Pre-Prep students are learning letter names and sounds through our Phonics Program. Many children come into the ELC with existing letter recognition and have already commenced learning letters and sounds within the Reception Program.
However, it is important for children to refresh their knowledge and help cement this learning into long-term memory. Two sounds are introduced each week and are revised regularly. Blending—joining sounds together to make a word, and segmenting—pulling letters apart to make a word, will also be taught alongside the program to further develop pre-reading skills.

Cheer on Our Athletes
Junior School Athletics has moved to Thursday, 10 March, at 1.15 pm on Main Oval, near the Pavilion. Students must wear their sport uniform with house colour polo top.
Parents are invited to attend this event to cheer on our runners. Please remain behind the bunting and do not come to the house tents on the other side of the field. Parents must be fully vaccinated and QR code on the day.
Grandparents & Special Friends’ Morning
It has been far too long since we have had our grandparents and special friends visit us and we look forward to this event on Tuesday, 22 March.
All adults must be fully vaccinated, wear masks and QR code upon arrival.
We plan to start in the classrooms with grandparents and special friends visiting the children and we will then make our way to the John Twist Hall to be entertained by our Junior School Choirs. We will finish with a morning tea in the Sports Hall. More details to come through myHaileybury.

Hi Edrington families! Freedom appears to be back on the menu—as were pancakes last week! As always, Shrove Tuesday was a massive hit for our children and there were so many happy chocolatey faces.
Tracy has been very busy selecting the most amazing Mothers Day gifts for our Mothers Day stall this year. I can’t wait for Mothers Day.
As always, the Uniform Shop is open every Wednesday morning. Pop in and visit Di for all your uniform needs.
Winter Warmers is back on for Term 2. Tickets from last year’s ticket sales are still valid and we will be selling more tickets now that we aren’t restricted by numbers. It’s going to be such a fun night!
Welcome to all our Class Reps. Keep an eye out for coffee catch ups and dinners with your fellow class parents.
Our next HPFE meeting will be held in the Pavilion on Friday, 11 March, at 2.15 pm. Come along, get involved and enjoy some afternoon tea before school pick-up.
In response to current events occurring with the Queensland Floods and the events unfolding in the Ukraine, Haileybury’s psychologists have updated the Dealing with a Challenging Event parent tip sheet on myHaileybury. Our thoughts are with those families impacted by these current events.
Whole School Arts Week
Newlands can’t wait to take part in the Whole School Arts Week from Tuesday, 15 March, to Friday, 18 March. There will be exciting Arts events available for Junior and Middle School students and their parents throughout the four days.
The Music Department is holding open rehearsals for our ensembles. Parents are welcome to come along and enjoy the rehearsal process as our young musicians prepare for upcoming performances. We have lunchtime concerts for soloists and pop-up music performances before school to welcome families at drop-off time.
All families are invited to the Senior School Twilight Concert on Thursday, 17 March, in the Senior School Quadrangle in front of Wings Café at Senior School, Keysborough.
Many ex-Newlands students and current Middle School students are performing and light refreshments are provided. There will also be a coffee cart run by VET Hospitality students with drinks available for a gold coin donation.
The concert will finish around 7.00 pm and it is a perfect occasion for Newlands families to enjoy some live music. No bookings are required.
Visit the art rooms during Arts Week and be inspired by the creative use of colour and pattern. Students in Years 4–8 will create a collaborative artwork based on the art of Jeni Stark, who explores the intricate layers of the natural world through patterns and colour.
Students will also be introduced to black and white optical illusions inspired by artist Bridget Riley.
Years 3 and 4 will get creative designing a ‘Puppet Pup’ to keep them company during the Autumn months.
Prep to Year 2 students will design their very own Rainbow Fish puppets. These will be used in drama performance sessions based on Hairy Maclary and The Rainbow Fish novels.
The Year 8 Drama elective—Page to Stage—will present their work to invited guests and Middle School students with a lunchtime performance on Wednesday and Friday. A special Middle School Drama Club session on Thursday will be run by our Senior School Drama Captains and is guaranteed to be a lot of fun and laughs.
A full program of arts events will be distributed via the myHaileybury app. We look forward to showcasing the tremendous talents of our students.

Welcome to Country With Uncle Mick
The ELC children are looking forward to joining the Junior School children and staff in a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony on Friday, 18 March, at 11.00 am.
Uncle Mick will perform the ceremony and welcome the Newlands students and staff to the land of the Bunurong People of the Kulin Nation. Traditionally, this ceremony was performed to welcome visitors to the land and offer protection to them.
The Welcome to Country will incorporate a smoking ceremony, where Uncle Mick will burn native leaves to create smoke which the First Nations People believe offer physical and spiritual cleansing.
The ceremony is performed as a gesture of goodwill towards Newlands children and their educators and is a ceremony that has taken place for over 60,000 years. Parents are welcome to join us for this beautiful community event.
Harmony Day
ELC children are invited to wear multicultural costumes to the ELC to celebrate Harmony Day. Reception S and N, and Pre-Prep T, K and P classes will dress up on Wednesday, 23 March.
Reception W will celebrate Harmony Day on Thursday, 24 March. The message for this day is that ‘Everyone Belongs’. We celebrate our diversity of cultures on these days but also seek to encourage a sense of inclusiveness, respect and belonging within the ELC throughout the year.
We are delighted to welcome ELC families to share their culture with their child’s class through songs, dance, cooking and cultural discussions and displays.
Greetings From Around the World
The Pre-Prep children are enjoying their Chinese language classes and are learning how to greet each other in Mandarin. The educators have extended this theme by inviting families to share greetings from different countries around the world.
We recently celebrated International Mother Language Day and the children participated in singing and learning several of the greetings spoken by families in their class.

JS Leaders Present at Assembly
At the Junior School Assembly, the new Year 4 Leaders presented for the first time on the big stage. The Homeroom Leaders ran the assembly this week and introduced speakers and performances, and announced recipients of Student of the Week Awards.
They did a wonderful job, speaking clearly and confidently into the microphone.
Shining the Spotlight on 3K
At the Junior School Assembly, classes have begun to present Spotlight performances. During these performances, a class demonstrates skills they have been learning in music and choir classes.
This week it was 3K’s turn. They sang You are My Sunshine while playing ukuleles and chime bars. It was a very catchy song and the rest of the Junior School joined in with their fellow students.
Early Bird Reading Program
Middle School mentors and Junior School students are very excited to see the start of our Early Bird Reading Program. Students in Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 arrived at school early on Tuesday morning, eager to read their Fitzroy readers to a Middle School Student.
This is a wonderful opportunity for students to build relationships, practice their reading fluency and build their comprehension skills. We look forward to seeing this program grow throughout the term as more students join in.
Middle School
Be an Upstander
Courage to Care believe that ordinary people have the power to make a positive difference in the lives of others by being Upstanders. Taking inspiration from real-life extraordinary acts of courage, the Upstander Programs inspire people to make a difference by standing up and taking action, and creating real change in the schoolyard, workplaces and in our communities.
The Upstander Program was delivered to our Year 8 students earlier today by a team of skilled and dedicated volunteers. The program promotes acceptance of diversity within our community, transforms bystander behaviour by demonstrating that a bystander is never neutral, and offers practical tools to stand up against racism, bullying and prejudice.
Middle School House Events
Term 1 is going to be busy with many house events including:
Middle School House Athletics on Tuesday, 8 March, 8.30 am – 1.15 pm
Years 7 and 8 Cross Country relays on Tuesday, 5 April, 10.45 am – 1.15 pm.
The House Captains have had meetings, introduced themselves, met their teams and have started preparations for the upcoming events. It has been wonderful to see them already displaying leadership and assisting the Junior School House events in tee-ball and kickball.
Additional house events for 2022 include swimming, arts, assemblies, sports, orienteering and social justice initiatives.
The House Program’s aim is for students to try something new, to participate and have fun!
International Women’s Day is always an important day on the GMS Newlands calendar. This year it falls on Tuesday, 8 March, with the theme ‘#breakthebias’.
As part of our acknowledgement of this important event, we will welcome Ms Layne Beachley AO. Ms Beachley is a seven-time World Champion surfer and she will speak to our Middle School students during assembly about the challenges and successes she faced as an elite athlete in a traditionally male dominated sport.

Thank you to all our parents for attending the Year level Coffee Mornings over the past four weeks. It is so lovely to welcome our new parents and to see so many parents connecting at the café Match and Co. Here, we share some pictures from the Years 7 and 8 events.
HPFK Pancake Day
Pancake Day is one of our favourite events of the year. It is lovely to see the smiles on the faces of our ELC and Junior School students when they receive their pancake and select their toppings.
A huge thank you to Linette Grossi for organising this event and to all our parents for volunteering.
HPFK Uniform Shop
Our Uniform Shop is open every Friday during term from 2.30 pm – 4.30 pm. Our next Saturday opening is on Saturday, 2 April, from 9.00 am – 12.00 noon.
Haileybury HPFK Social Media
The Haileybury HPFK Facebook page is our primary communication channel—it is a must for all parents. We publish all events, reminders and HPFK Uniform Shop openings there first. If you would like to connect with our Facebook community, please join our Facebook page by clicking on this link.
Tuesday, 15 February saw a large number of our graduates return to the School for the annual Honours Assembly to celebrate the academic achievements of the Class of 2021.
Haileybury’s VCE successes are so exceptional that Aikman Hall can no longer fit both Haileybury College and Haileybury Girls College students at the same time!
So at each assembly, students from Years 10, 11 and 12 were presented with awards for exemplary achievement in individual subjects. We then announced the names of those graduates who had been placed on the Scholars and Honours Board.
The assemblies concluded with the School applauding the achievements of the Duces of Haileybury College: Harry Sun, Daniel Greenham, James Lam, Duvin Nambuwasam, Raymond Zhang,Jeremy Nielsen and Samarth Raghavendra and our Dux of Haileybury Girls College, Lisa Gorman. They all achieved an ATAR of 99.95—a reflection of their hard work and effort.
Senior School Meet and Greet – Keysborough
Over 150 families from Years 9–12 attended the Keysborough Meet and Greet Night on Wednesday, 23 February. This was a great way for parents to get together after a year of COVID-19 restrictions—and they certainly enjoyed doing so!
It was also an opportunity for them to meet our Head of Senior Girls, Helen Wadden, Head of Senior Boys, Graham Leys, the two Heads of Pre-Senior and relevant Heads of House. The function was held in Senior School Quad which has a beautiful outlook and a wonderful evening was had by all.
RCD Senior School Fundraiser
On Thursday, the Haileybury Boat Club took part in the 2022 Connor’s Erg Challenge. All Years 10–12 rowers completed 100 km on a rowing machine in the shortest amount of time possible.
The quad party, run in tandem with the Erg Challenge, was a huge success and with generous donations from our community, we raised just over $3,000 for the Robert Connor Dawes Foundation. It will go towards funding for brain tumour research, care and treatment.
It was a great turnout and a big thank you to all the rowers and school student leaders who helped make the day a success.

Music
The Sound of Music
The Haileybury Music Department offers students a range of performance opportunities including large ensemble concerts, jazz nights, outdoor events, Aria Night and the fortnightly Chapel Concert Series. These free public concerts occur fortnightly on Wednesdays between 1.20 pm and 2 pm in the David Bradshaw Chapel at Keysborough.
The program was initiated in 2010 by Haileybury’s organ tutor, Thomas Heywood, and the year-long series is open to the public as well as family and friends of Haileybury students, past and present.
Designed as a performance opportunity for our leading orchestral and classical voice students, the concerts enjoy the stunning acoustics in the Haileybury Chapel and a backdrop of stained-glass mosaic windows and artwork by Melbourne artist, Leonard French.
The two concerts this year have been outstanding and audiences have marvelled at the quality of the music. I encourage everyone to consider visiting the school this Wednesday, 9 March, for the next concert. I’m certain that you’ll be inspired.

Visual Arts
Painting En Plein Air
Painting en plein air with the Year 9 City Studio Arts students was a great way to foster a love of our local city environment and an appreciation for the historical aspect of drawing and painting in nature.
En plein air drawing and painting experiences develop observation skills, creative thinking and well-developed visual memory because the environmental conditions change all the time.
During two workshops, students drew and painted at Flagstaff Gardens and Haileybury’s level 10 rooftop—both inspiring locations. Students focused on the stunning panoramic aerial vistas of the city and the aesthetics of nature and the local figures sauntering through the gardens.
Students’ intellectual activity was focused on observing and memorising nature—its proportions, motion, character, tonal and colour relationships. Students also develop an aesthetic perception of the world, which they take back into the classroom.
There is something magical about painting outdoors that keeps students engaged in the painting process and it’s an experience that students can enjoy again and again at the City campus.

Pipes & Drums
The Kilts are in Full Swing!
On Friday, 25 February, we saw the Pipes & Drums in full swing as they performed at the opening of the Founders Day Cocktail Party. After a long absence of performances due to COVID-19 cancellations, the students were ecstatic to be performing in person again.
The band of 20-plus students was led by Pipe Sergeant Oliver Perry.
This performance was, in a way, a dress rehearsal for the band’s interschool competition on Sunday, 27 February, when they competed against school pipe bands from across the state.
The Victorian Pipe Band Association competition season began on Sunday, 27 February, and Haileybury Pipes & Drums competed against interschool rivals. The No. 1 and No. 2 bands were successful in the following categories:
Grade 4A – Haileybury – 1st
Grade 4B – Haileybury – 2nd
Novice Juvenile A Medley – Haileybury – 1st
Novice Juvenile A MSR – Haileybury – 2nd
Novice Juvenile B – Haileybury – 3rd

Foundation
What Does a Donor Look Like?
At Haileybury, there is no set description of an average donor, and Haileybury and the Foundation appreciate all donations regardless of size or type. Donations range from $50 annually to over $100,000.
Our donors are far from average—they come from all walks of life, from all parts of our community and they cover a wide age range. It is extraordinary to think that those who provide gifts to the Foundation include:
Parents
Alumni members
Alumni sport clubs
Parents and Friends groups
Staff
Students
Grandparents
Connected businesses
Class groups
Past parents.
Last year, our youngest donor was only 17-years-old and our oldest was 96.
The most popular fund is our Scholarship Fund, however, many donors gift funds to our Building and Library Programs. Every donation directly benefits our students.
The one thing our donors do have in common though is that they are all changing lives forever.
Thank you.

CEO | Principal's Report - Issue 04

Wellbeing - Issue 04

Junior School

House Athletics
We look forward to seeing our Middle School getting into the house spirit for this year’s House Athletics Competition. It will be held on the Main Oval on Tuesday, 8 March.
Recognising International Women’s Day
Over the past week we have been
celebrating equality with our boys and girls. During Homeroom sessions, the students have participated in activities and competed in a colouring competition. These activities help build understanding about the significance of this day and the importance of gender equality across our society. Jeanette Rawlings
Head of Edrington (Berwick)
Haileybury Parents & Friends Edrington (HPFE)
Early Learning Centre

HPFK Year Level Coffee Mornings

Thank you.

The show was a sell-out and a huge success, and we are so proud of everyone involved - so much talent and definitely a ‘watch this space’ moment!
Details of the talented cast and creators behind the musical are:
Written by: Joshua Connell (OH 2019) and Stephanie Lee (OH 2018)
Directed and produced by: Stephanie Lee (OH 2018)
Performed by: Joshua Connell (OH 2019), Jeremy Harland (OH 2019), Grace Laing (OH 2018) and Liimei Lim.

The Blazer Squad is a leadership group selected for demonstrating a high level of ability in the chosen sport and, most importantly, demonstrating the highest standards, character and Haileybury values. They are also expected to prioritise Haileybury sport.
We wish these sport leaders all the best for the season.
Diving for Victoria
Captain of Boys’ Diving, Blake Connors (Year 11) has been selected to represent Victoria at the National Championships in Adelaide. Blake is in good form and we look forward to him performing and leading the diving team in the APS Swimming and Diving Finals later in the month.
We wish him all the very best.
Haileybury’s Heptathlon Champions
Congratulations to Mia Scerri (Year 12) for her National U18 Girls title and to Jaz Firth (Year 8) for her Bronze medal in the U15 Girls National Heptathlon Championships in Sydney. We look forward to their upcoming State and National individual championships.
Sport For All
At Haileybury, students can try 38 different sports and activities. The overall aim of the Haileybury Sport Program is to encourage students to be active for life and those values are upheld by the staff and coaches.
Recently, Haileybury Principal | CEO, Mr Derek Scott, assisted with Haileybury’s fifth XI. He umpired and provided valuable tips to our cricketers—an example of the importance placed on sport at Haileybury at all levels.
