The brilliant work of Haileybury teachers, the hard work of students and the support of families have ensured that students continued their strong reading and number development.
This is highlighted in the outstanding NAPLAN (National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy) results received by the School last week.
A fundamental tenet of outstanding education outcomes is a strong foundation in literacy and numeracy. Haileybury teachers continue to focus on this through the use of the Explicit Teaching Model in the Junior School which lays the strongest possible foundation.
The 2022 Haileybury NAPLAN data at Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 reflects the strength of our foundation in literacy and numeracy, which is built upon by the outstanding Middle School teaching team.
The School’s results, which will be released on the MySchool website later this year, confirm that Haileybury students have, once again, performed at the very highest levels in the country.
The School’s combined Years 7 and 9 results were the best in the 14 years since NAPLAN began.
The performance was particularly notable this year coming off two years of interruptions caused by COVID-19 lockdowns. The work of Haileybury teachers in delivering a full virtual classroom program has enabled students to progress at the same pace as they would have had they been at school.
It is a remarkable achievement. Haileybury students are generally performing two to three years above the national average in literacy and numeracy.
Haileybury families with students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will receive their individual NAPLAN data reports in the next two weeks.
Haileybury is a strong education community. The work of brilliant teachers, support from families and the hard work of students delivers exceptional education outcomes.

Wear It Purple
On Friday, 26 August, as well as celebrating Book Week with our Pre-Prep and Junior School students dressed as wonderful characters from their favourite books, our staff wore a purple ribbon for Wear It Purple Day.
The day ‘strives to foster supportive, safe, empowering and inclusive environments for rainbow young people’. At Haileybury where every child matters every day, providing a space where every child feels they belong is important to us.
Ready for Adventures
Our camp program provides opportunities for students to step outside the classroom and the familiarity of their daily routines to explore new locations, build resilience, develop teamwork and take part in activities that may be different or challenging. They do all this in a supportive and caring environment.
In the coming weeks our Year 3 and Year 6 students will be heading away for adventures.

Our Child Safe Culture and Commitment
All children have the right to feel safe and to be safe all the time. The new mandatory Victorian Child Safe Standards have provided an opportunity to review the 11 child safe standards and to strengthen and prioritise child safe standards into our everyday thinking.
Our children are valued, respected, protected from harm and empowered to speak up about any safety concerns. Child Safe Standard 3 states that ‘children and young people are empowered about their rights, participate in decisions affecting them and are taken seriously’.
Supporting this, we establish an environment of trust and inclusion that enables children to ask questions and speak up if they are worried or feeling unsafe.
To seek children’s views on this, we asked them: What makes you feel safe? and What makes you feel unsafe? Here is a selection of their answers.
“Laughing makes me feel safe, and the teachers make me happy."
“When the teachers are here to help us, and the nurse.”
“My friends caring about me.”
“The teachers staying and being around. Reading a book too.”
“When it is dark, I feel unsafe.”
Celebrating Science
The ELC celebrated National Science Week with groups joining together for some fun and experiments. During their investigations, children made predictions and hypothesised, observed and noticed changes.
As part of the Children’s Book Council of Australia Book Week, the ELC celebrated their love of books and literacy. The children and teachers thought of a favourite book and used their creativity to dress as a character from that story. The children enjoyed parading their costumes with their fellow ELC and Junior School communities—such fun!

Book Week Doesn’t Disappoint
One of our favourite weeks of the year was a whole lot of fun! The Children’s Book Council of Australia Book Week theme for 2022 was ‘Dreaming with eyes open…’ and we did lots to celebrate. Meerkat Productions performed the picture story book, Stellarphant and Chris Kennett, illustrator of books such as School of Monsters, The Nerd Herd and Cross Bones, did an awesome workshop with the Years 3 and 4 students.
The library hosted lunchtime craft activities and all the children voted for their favourite book. To finish the week, we had The Great Book Swap which raises money for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation and the annual Book Week character parade was the cherry on the cake!

Tales of Finals Time
After what has felt like an eternal winter, the sun has finally appeared and shared its goodness and lifted spirits in equal measure. In our community it is finals time with many of our students playing in high stakes elimination finals across varied sports.
On Monday mornings we love to hear them regale their friends with their epic battles of snatching victory from the jaws of defeat, or succumbing to a better team in valiant and noble losses.
Our students are so passionate and engaged in their community sport commitments, be they a Zebby, a Rover, a Hammer, a Starlet, a Mintie a Shark or even a Vampire. Yes, there is a club out there known as the Vampires! Best wishes to all our boys and girls in their respective finals.
Special mention to our dads and significant male role models. We hope you enjoyed our festivities, assemblies and amazing Fathers Day gifts. Dads play such a vital role in the development of our students—and, of course, in helping us identify good jokes from bad ones! Most dad jokes are pretty poor but on Fathers Day, we can all just laugh along for the morning at least!

Where did Term 3 Go?
We are coming to the end of Term 3 and what a quick, busy but wonderful term it has been.
The HPFC movie night was a remarkable success with lots of Junior School students—and some parents—enjoying The Bad Guys. Thank you to the parent volunteers who helped on the night. Without your help, the event would not go ahead.
I would also like to thank our volunteers who helped with the Fathers Day stall last week. It was wonderful to see all the children excitedly purchasing gifts for their dad or grandfather.
We have one more event planned before the end of term. On Thursday, 8 September we have the Years 5 and 6 Disco which has been organised by the Year 8 student leaders. Please keep an eye out for the trybooking link for tickets.
After the two months summer break we have welcomed back our students to online learning due to the recent COVID-19 restrictions that are in place. However, our Year 9 and 12 students were able to begin their school year the following week. School leaders worked closely with government officials and the education bureaus of Wuqing and Tianjin to ensure detailed plans were in place to follow all required COVID-19 criteria.
Parents dropped off their Year 9 and Year 12 children and students were then escorted to our registration checkpoints. After the students verified their health code, had their luggage disinfected and the school doctor tested their temperature, they were greeted by their Heads of School, welfare staff and teachers.
Later that night, the students met in their homeroom to watch a presentation.
New Academic Year Opening Ceremony
To celebrate the start of the new Haileybury school year students and staff gathered on the sports oval. The opening ceremony was hosted by Ethan Jia and the Gao Kao School and included the Chinese National Anthem and the raising of the national flag.
Peter Rogerson, Executive Principal of HIST, warmly welcomed the new students and encouraged them to set clear goals and to study hard.
Foreign Language School Students Join Haileybury
Five Beijing Foreign Language School and two Sanshui Foreign Language School students have joined Haileybury Tianjin’s Year 12 program. They were met by their Head of House, Homeroom teachers and their Life teachers as part of their induction program into the Senior School.
Professional Learning and Development Program
Before students returned to school, Haileybury staff took part in an in-depth professional learning and development program. The four-day program consisted of key presentations and workshops and Mr Rogerson outlined the School’s future directions.
Each Sub-School presented its key goals and conducted welfare and curriculum training. Throughout the program, Haileybury’s pillars of academic excellence, student welfare, professional learning through collaboration and an international outlook were consistently reflected upon.

City Brings Home Gold!
We are thrilled that numerous Dance and Aerobics teams have represented Haileybury at the Nationals in Queensland and we are so proud of our City students who performed so well in their different events.
Special congratulations go to our City Years 5 and 6 girls and boys who won gold. To be national champions is a wonderful achievement!
Alices in Wonderland
What a joyful performance we experienced as we travelled through the City Wonderland! Up and down the rabbit hole we went, led by a bevy of Alices and a few White Rabbits! The entire show was a wonderful celebration of the arts at City campus.
The watches for the White Rabbit were made using the 3D printer and Nanna Alice’s Café was run by Year 8 leaders to raise money for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. We are indeed innovative and entrepreneurial at Haileybury City, with a strong social justice focus, too.
Congratulations to all our cast and crew and special thanks to Philippa Bell and all our staff who are the talent behind the talent!
Finally, we hope a happy Fathers Day was enjoyed by all our dads, grandpas and significant men in the lives of our children and young people.

Walking with Rosie
Children in Reception have extended their understanding of directional language through the beloved children’s picture book, Rosie’s Walk by Pat Hutchins.
Rosie’s farm has been replicated in our ELC and children have enthusiastically helped Rosie the hen go on a walk through the farm, avoiding obstacles along the way and using language such as ‘over, under, past and through’.
This experience supports children’s recent engagement with Cinderella who was making her way back to her lost shoe and using language such as ‘left, right, up and down’. Directional and positional language like this supports a child’s ability to give and follow directions and provides opportunities to increase their vocabulary.
Going on a Number Hunt
As Pre-Preps focus on learning numbers up to 100, they have been excited to join in a number hunt.
The City has been a favourite hunting spot as children go for walks on the weekends or walk home and spot numbers within their environment. Families have supported their child by taking photos of numbers they find and these have been added to our Pre-Prep number chart.
Our number hunt has encouraged children to look out for numbers in their environment, supported number recognition and their place value and has allowed us to create a meaningful hundreds chart that will support our focus on skip-counting.

Students Learn About Cybersafety
In Week 7, our Junior School students took part in some learning experiences focused on their digital safety and wellbeing.
The Cyber Safety Project, endorsed by the eSafety Commissioner, presented age-appropriate sessions to students who interacted with scenarios and workshopped strategies they can use when engaging in the digital world.
The Cyber Safety Project’s aim is to empower every young Australian to be able to manage their digital safety and wellbeing and this incursion provided students with a solid foundation to build on at school and at home.
A Special Morning
How many times can you shoot a ball into the basket? Can you beat Dad’s score? How about a game of snakes and ladders? How well do you know Dad? All these questions were asked and answered at our Junior School Fathers and Significant Men Morning last week.
Students were thrilled to spend time with their fathers or a significant male figure on Friday morning. Beginning with a quiz where we tested our special guests’ knowledge of Haileybury City, those guests then made their way to Levels 1 and 3 where they took part in activities chosen by their child.
Board games, a father and son quiz, beat the buzzer and creating a photo rocket frame allowed students to spend quality bonding time with their special person. It was also a wonderful opportunity for our special guests to spend time in the classroom and receive a gift.
Middle School
Exciting Times in Middle School
We have had an eventful few weeks in the Middle School at City!
OHA week was celebrated with a visit from Russell Davidson, Director of Development & Alumni Relations, who reminded us of many old Haileyburians who have had a positive influence on our communities and, in some cases, the world!
Russell explained to us the ways in which we can stay connected to our great School once we have finished our formal schooling experience. The end of the week was celebrated with a sausage sizzle on the Level 10 rooftop with its fabulous view of the Melbourne CBD.
After years of preparation, Dance and Aerobics teams from City Campus were selected as National Finalists and invited to the Gold Coast to compete against the best in Australia. This is the first time City students have made Nationals and, as you can imagine, we were all very excited!
We are exceptionally proud of all participants and sincerely thank our Dance and Aerobics coaches, as well as Carolyn Mansour and Catherine McNamara for their leadership of these groups. We also congratulate our Years 5 and 6 Dance team who won their event and brought home gold!
Throughout Term 3, City campus has transformed into its very own Wonderland! City’s Alices in Wonderland was a huge success and stretched the boundaries of our conventional theatre performances, taking the audience on a journey through every level of City.
From Nana Alice’s Café on Ground Floor to the Court Room on Level 9, City lit up with an array of playing cards, outspoken queens and singing flowers!
Spring has arrived and there are only a couple of weeks until the September school holidays. We hope everyone enjoys some downtime and creates some everlasting memories.
To all the dads and significant men in our community, thank you for everything you do for your children, families and significant others. We hope your Fathers Day was filled with fun, love and laughter, and perhaps you were treated to your favourite brekkie, lunch or dinner cooked by your loved ones.
Coming up this Friday is the Magenta Movie night at the Coburg Drive-In. If you haven’t purchased your tickets yet, you can still do so via the link below.
Tickets are $40 per car which includes a Magenta lolly bag. Pack up the kids, bring the doonas and pillows, get the thermos out and sit back and relax. A G/PG rated movie starts at 6.00 to 6.30 pm and an M rated movie will start from 7.00 pm. We hope to see you there.
Last week, we were very excited to officially open our new Boarding House, Madjirra, which is the Larrakia word for ‘bird’. Aunty Bilawarra Lee joined us to deliver a Welcome To Country, and her family members, Trent and Tony Lee, conducted the Larrakia Smoking Ceremony.
Haileybury CEO|Principal, Derek Scott, and Haileybury Board member, Professor Deborah Corrigan, unveiled the plaque and cut the ceremonial cake in front of official guests, members of the Haileybury Executive team, the HRS Board, staff and students.
The 60-bed boarding house will see the welcome return of international students to Darwin and cater for students from rural and remote parts of the Northern Territory and surrounding states.
It includes male and female accommodation, single and dual occupancy rooms, and common living areas where students can study and socialise.
Hearty congratulations to everyone for being part of this project and particularly to our Head of Boarding, Dennis Nowak, and our Deputy Heads of Boarding, Amelia Laginikora and Paul Laginikora. They expertly lead the staff and students who make up this integral part of the HRS community.
HRS values a holistic education. We want to develop essential life skills in our young people by offering the best teaching and learning standards that enable students to navigate the world successfully.
Our recognition as Boarding School of the Year tells us that HRS is well on track to becoming a world-class school that welcomes students of all cultures and backgrounds.
It was wonderful to celebrate with our community at the recent Parent Cocktail Party in Dumabudla. Around 200 parents, guardians and staff enjoyed the hospitality of Haileybury Melbourne CEO|Principal, Derek Scott, who joined us for the event.
We highlighted our desire to keep increasing connections between Melbourne and Darwin. As we share largely common curriculum and courses from Transition to Year 1, we have had around 60 staff this year who have moved between the two cities to further develop their knowledge and skills.
It is also fantastic that HRS students are having opportunities to mix with their Haileybury Melbourne peers, such as during visits from Melbourne Year 9 girls and boys and through a pending AFL visit.
Our Year 12 Outdoor Ed class recently travelled to Victoria and spent time on experiential learning with their southern peers. We are well into planning an October visit of a group of our Year 9s to Melbourne and we have advertised the possibility of our 2023 Year 10s winning a Principal’s Scholarship to exchange for one term with Haileybury Melbourne.
Well done to all members of our community for joining in and contributing to the celebrations.

Igniting Imaginations
Book Week has been inspiring young readers and igniting imaginations since 1945 and is a week where our learning community celebrates children’s literature and Australian authors and illustrators.
This year, enjoying a visit from author, Coral Vass, children learnt that characters can be people or animals and that they often go through a transformation from the beginning to the end of a story.
The Week ended with our glorious dress up day and children were so excited to see their teachers dressed up, too!
We enjoyed a special reading of the book that won this year’s Early Childhood category, Jetty Jumping by Andrea Rowe and illustrated by Hannah Sommerville. This is a lovely story of Milla overcoming her fear of the unknown water below the jetty and finding beauty in the deep, dark sea.
Book Week reminds us of how magical books are for children. They really do provide them with so much joy, knowledge, laughter and wonder.
Junior School
Lunchtime Club
To encourage other children to become leaders, our Year 4 students have been running lunchtime clubs. Sophie Johnston, Olivia Salek, Tessa Percival
and Hanmo Fan have done a wonderful job of running a lunchtime craft club for the Prep and Year 1 students each Wednesday.
Each week they plan a different activity and support the younger students, and the club has been very popular! This week’s activity was creating a craft watermelon and fruit bookmarks. They have done a terrific job. Well done, girls!
Family STEM Night
We will be holding a STEM Evening (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) in classrooms on Thursday, 15 September, from 6.00 to 7.00 pm. STEM is an important part of our curriculum and with the rise of new technologies, the ability to understand and apply data and develop solutions to complex problems will be important life skills for the future.
Families are invited to take part in two hands-on STEM activities. These sessions will be assigned to each family and will run for 20 minutes each, so please bring your letter with you on the night so you know where your sessions are located. To manage numbers in classrooms, only Junior School students are permitted with parents. We look forward to completing some fun STEM activities!
Middle School
Wrapping up the Term
Thank you to the dads and special friends who came along to the Fathers Day breakfast. John Twist Hall was a hive of activity as the long-awaited arcade came to life. Congratulations to all Middle School boys who worked hard and honed their engineering skills to put the arcade together.
We look forward to celebrating the sporting participation and successes of our students at the Winter Sports Assembly on Friday, 9 September.
The final two weeks of Term 3 offer experiences and learning opportunities for students outside the classroom. On Wednesday, 14 September, the Year 7 students will immerse themselves in historical culture as they travel to the NGV and the Melbourne Museum. This will complement their humanities study.
Meanwhile, our Year 6 boys will travel to Warrnambool for their first camping experience of the year.
The Middle School House Public Speaking Competition will be held on Friday, 16 September. The students first spoke to their houses and the best speakers have been selected by their House to represent them in the competition.
We wish them all the best of luck.

Haileybury Parents & Friends Edrington (HPFE)
Hello Edrington!
It has been a hectic couple of weeks on campus and off, and the holidays and a well-earned rest will soon be here.
Over the past few weeks, we asked for your assistance and oh my gosh, did you answer the call!
Thank you so much to our Fathers Day Stall and Cross Campus Cross-Country Sausage Sizzle volunteers! Events like these can’t happen without you, so from all of us at the HPFE, thank you so much for your help!
Tonight, Monday, 5 September we are hosting our HPFE meeting from 6.00 pm to 7.00 pm. Drinks and nibbles are provided and we hope to see you come along and get involved.
The Uniform Shop is open every Wednesday morning from 8.30 am – 10.15 am and on every second Friday from 2.45 pm – to 4.00 pm for the remainder of Term 3, to coincide with JS Assembly.
The Uniform Shop is managed by the HPFE and relies on our community to keep it running. If you are available for a couple of hours a week to help Di in the shop, please send her an email: Shus-berwick@haileybury.vic.edu.au.
Wow! What a show! What talent! These were just some of the many wonderful reviews and feedback received after Into the Woods Jr, written by the late composer, Stephen Sondheim. The performance closed last week to sell-out audiences.
An intense rehearsal period preceded the performances. Many of the cast, including the Director, Rachael Walsh, began work on the show while they were still finalising our other wonderful Newlands production, James and the Giant Peach.
The development of new skills over the year was clearly on display in this final production for the year. The cast members are to be congratulated on their dedication and consistent enthusiasm.
During the past fortnight, the Haileybury Middle School Concert Band program participated at the Victorian Schools Music Festival (VSMF) at Hawthorn Town Hall. Like most other music festivals, the VSMF has largely been on hold for the past couple of years.
Seeing students perform and listen to each other across the festival was inspiring for everyone involved. The event was also live streamed so parents could view performances online.
R U OK? Day takes place on Thursday, 8 September 2022. In our busy daily life, it is important to check in with the people around us.
This national day reminds Australians to ask ‘are you OK?’ and to start a meaningful conversation whenever they spot signs that someone they care about might need support.

Vicky’s Scholarship Success
Congratulations to ELC staff member Vicky Sirivorasarn who has been awarded a full scholarship (Warrawong Scholarship) to attend the Early Childhood Australia National Conference in Canberra in October.
The scholarship acknowledges the significant work Vicky has put into her role as an Inclusion Support Educator. She supports children’s social play using puppets to re-enact play scenarios to help children learn to self-regulate their emotions.
Vicky is inspired by natural play and sustainability practices and has a passion for establishing outdoor learning using natural resources.
Our New Pre-Prep Chinese Language Program
This year, Newlands ELC has received a Department of Education and Training grant for a Chinese Language Program for our Pre-Prep students. It is presented by Silvia Wang and focuses on learning Chinese language through play.
The program is supported by the Early Learning Languages Australia app, which is specifically designed for four and five-year-old children. Recently the Pre-Prep children were visited by Ting Hu, Senior School Chinese Language Teacher, and by Year 9 students.
They introduced themselves to the children using posters they made to talk about themselves in Chinese, and they also read a short book to the children in Chinese.
Junior School
Very Special Kids Carnival Day
The Newlands community helped raise money and awareness for the Very Special Kids Piggy Bank Appeal by enjoying a Very Special Kids Carnival Day. Students across ELC, Junior School and Middle School wore casual clothes and brought in a gold coin donation.
Junior School and Middle School enjoyed a delicious sausage sizzle, provided by the Haileybury Parents & Friends Keysborough (HPFK). Cox House organised carnival games and activities in the Sports Hall and students could purchase merchandise from the VSK Big Pig.
Thank you to all students and families for raising a grand total of $5,619.59.
The Marvels of Melbourne Museum
To coincide with their Inquiry unit on discoveries, inventions and developments, the Year 2 students are excited to head to Melbourne Museum in the final week of Term 3.
They will explore Aboriginal artefacts in the Bunjilaka Cultural Centre and take a trip back in time to our city’s early days in the Melbourne Story exhibition.
In the Mini Mega Model Museum, they will get hands-on with miniature models and investigate the world around them on a different scale. This will be our Year 2 students’ first Junior School excursion and we know they will represent Haileybury with pride!
Year 3s Head to Their First Camp
We wish our Year 3 students all the best as they head to Forest Edge, Neerim East for their first camp. They leave Wednesday morning and return on Friday afternoon. For many students, this will be their first time away from their families.
The students will enjoy the wide range of challenges on offer and there will be many opportunities for students to work in teams. One example of this is Hut Building, where students collaborate to build a waterproof hut using logs, branches, bark and leaves.
Other activities such as rock climbing and crate climbing provide rewarding challenges for students as they are encouraged and supported by their Year 3 peers.

Year 6 Lolly and Bake Stall
During Humanities the Year 6 students have been investigating global issues including energy poverty. We will be constructing mini solar lamps to send to underprivileged students in neighbouring countries so they have light available to do their school work.
The Year 6 girls held a fabulous lolly and bake stall to raise funds for this project.
Curious Minds and Model United Nations
Year 8 students involved in the Model United Nations program at Newlands will travel to the City campus for a Model United Nations General Assembly.
Over the past few weeks, students have been researching the ongoing conflict in Yemen to prepare to represent their assigned nations at the General Assembly. As delegates, they will assess the question of gender equality in Yemen and how women have been disadvantaged by the conflict.
Through debate and discussion, the delegates will vote to approve, oppose or amend proposed resolutions to these issues. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to learn about global issues and to hone their public speaking skills.
The Model United Nations is offered to Year 8 students as part of the Curious Minds program during Terms 2 and 3. Look out for information and for the sign-up session at the end of Term 1 in 2023.
Middle School Movie Night
All Middle School families are invited to attend our Middle School Movie Night on Friday, 9 September from 5.00 pm. This is a wonderful opportunity to have a fun afternoon and evening together as a community.
There will be entertainment from our Middle School students before the sun goes down and Minions: The Rise of Gru starts. BYO picnic blankets and dinner. Snacks will be available for purchase on the night, thanks to the HPFK, with all proceeds going to charity.
All Middle School students and their siblings are welcome. An adult must be in attendance for each family. Please book your FREE ticket through the trybooking link.

Methane Bubbles and Elephant Toothpaste
Brighton Senior School was abuzz with activity during a very busy and successful STEM week. In tutor group, the students took part in daily STEM challenges, like riddles, maths and more, with the speediest group winning prizes.
Throughout the week the cohort joined in ‘Fun Behind the Glass’, which consisted of flaming methane bubbles and elephant’s toothpaste, a chess tournament and a science-themed escape room.
The ELC students experienced a taste of Senior School Science on Wednesday morning with a trip up to the lab to witness the Senior School Science teachers and STEM Captain, Hannah Maddern (Year 11), leading some amazing experiments.
The chess tournament had four challengers with Dimitri Stavrakoglou (Year 11) earning the Grand Master title.
The escape room consisted of six puzzles that, when solved, provided the team with a number that could be collected and used with a cypher to provide a letter. Completing all six puzzles gave contestants the letters to spell a word—illusion.
Each puzzle emphasised a different discipline of science—from the light spectrum of physics to amino acid sequencing of biology. There were eight fiercely competitive teams among the Pre-Senior and Senior School cohort. The victorious team were Pre-Senior girls and consisted of the very clever Indiana Jayasekera (Year 9), Kayla Johnstone (Year 9), Sisi Wang
(Year 9), and Madeleine Antonis (Year 9).
In culmination of STEM week, our incredible STEM captains, Hannah Maddern (Year 11) and Dominic Rowe (Year 12) had a hand in organising the STEM conference over Zoom on Friday evening. The event was full of fun activities, challenges and inspiring guest speakers.
Thank you to all involved in making our STEM Week a memorable experience.

Into the Woods Jnr was a beautiful and striking show that captivated audiences at Newlands at the end of August. A talented live band and well-rehearsed group of passionate performers and creatives worked together to bring composer Stephen Sondheim’s grand tale to life. Congratulations to the cast, crew and creative team for transporting us to a world of magic and wonder.
The City campus was transformed to bring to life a promenade production of Alices in Wonderland. The gleeful audience moved across levels—inside and outside, up stairs and down elevators to experience this creative version of Lewis Carroll’s story.
The direction and design were thoughtful and imaginative, the cast had a ball and the audience delighted at the whimsy, magic and execution of the production. Many congratulations to the cast, crew and creative team for coordinating such an interesting and engaging piece of theatre.
During the past fortnight the Haileybury Middle School Concert Band program participated at the Victorian Schools Music Festival (VSMF) at Hawthorn Town Hall. Like most other music festivals, the VSMF has largely been on hold for the past couple of years.
This year the festival was back in full swing with choirs, orchestras, concert bands and jazz ensembles taking to the stage across a very busy four-week program.
In addition to performing on stage and listening to other ensembles, as part of the program, each group rehearses with a leading guest conductor. Teachers also have the scope to work backstage.
Seeing students perform and listen to each other across the festival was inspiring for everyone involved. The event was also live streamed so parents could view performances online.
This year, Haileybury performed in two sections of the festival—once with a combined Middle School band from City, Berwick and Brighton and also with a band from Keysborough. In total, more than 140 Haileybury students took part.
While the VSMF focuses on celebrating the collective skills of young performers, there is a competitive element to the program and I am extremely proud to share that for the two sections that the Haileybury bands competed in, they won the prestigious Gold Award.
Congratulations to our amazing young musicians!

Studio Arts Exhibition and Art Industry Excursion
Unit 2 Studio Arts students spent a day in the city exploring the variety of exhibition spaces that Melbourne has to offer. During a street art jaunt in Hosier Lane, they watched new murals being installed.
They then compared the city’s public artworks, such as contemporary Indigenous artist Maree Clarke’s 1992 painted poles commissioned for the Swanston Street Walk Public Art Project and the graphics enhancing the construction hoardings that form part of the Metro Tunnel Creative Program. At each point, they considered how the creative arts enrich public life.
They also visited the Nicholas Building’s many studios, galleries and maker spaces, discovered the arts precinct in Degraves Street and moved to the more formal exhibition spaces of ACMI, the NGV and the Koorie Heritage Trust.
To explore how the exhibition and presentation of artworks contribute to the viewer's understanding of artistic and curatorial intentions, the two classes immersed themselves in the ACMI exhibition, Light: Works from Tate’s Collection.
Here, they engaged with the artistic treatment of light across history and cultures, art movements such as Impressionism, and from the traditional to contemporary. They experienced the juxtaposition of centuries-old oil paintings with installations utilising fluorescent lighting, kinetic sculpture and video.
To conclude the day, students delved into all corners of the NGV Australia’s collections and exhibitions, seeking inspiration for their folios and final artworks, linking ideas about presentation as a means of conveying ideas, and developing a deeper understanding of Australia’s art history.

B Band Triumphs in Baltic Ballarat
On Sunday, 21 August, our B band (2nds team) attended the Ballarat Grammar Pipe Band competition. It was uncomfortably cold—a low of –1C was chilly even by Scotland’s standards—however, the band persevered and marched on.
The B band delivered excellent performances all round, gaining top two spots in each grade they entered and edging out their local rivals who will also be attending the Australian Pipe Band Championships in October.
The group saw several new faces debuting their Pipes & Drums skills at their first competition. We are very proud of all members who participated and congratulate them on their wonderful successes.
This October, the B band will join the A band, who are current state champions, for the National Pipe Band Championships.
The inaugural Haileybury Foundation Giving Day on Thursday, 11 August, was a resounding success.
Our aim was to engage with more members of the Haileybury community and to tell the story of Haileybury Foundation’s great work to more people within our community. Importantly, Giving Day aimed to provide fully funded scholarships to students who would otherwise never be able to attend our School.
To have 209 donors contribute $181,561 on our first Giving Day was a wonderful result. The gift of an education is the best gift anyone can provide and we are delighted to tell you that, due to the success of the event, two students will now be the beneficiaries of the new Haileybury 130 Scholarships.
Next year, Noriah will join the Berwick campus in Year 9. Noriah’s interests include writing stories, reading fiction books, playing soccer and gardening. She also loves spending time with her family and friends, playing soccer and Korean dance, especially KPOP.
In 2023, Marley will commence at Brighton as a Year 7 student. Marley’s favourite activities include AFL, basketball, weekly keyboard lessons, surfing and skateboarding. Her favourite author is Morris Gleitzman and she loves competing against her brother in chess.
In the past few months, Marley has taken up beach volleyball and recently auditioned for her school play and was given a lead role.
Like Noriah, Marley is excited to attend Haileybury thanks to the support of our Giving Day donors whose every cent supports these scholarships.
In particular, our thanks are extended to our matching donors. Their vision to contribute before the Giving Day allowed all donations to be doubled. They are:
Tom Poulton (OH 1966) and Wendy Peter
Derek Scott
Neil and Annie Sutcliffe
Morgan’s Foundation
Old Haileyburians Association
Martin Ambrens (OH 1969)
Duncan Sutherland (OH 1959)
Peter Marriott (OH 1974)
John de Wijn (OH 1969)
The Estate of Anthony Avery
Grenda Foundation
School Pix
Aquastar Swim Schools
Clearwater Plumbing

Mercedes-Benz Berwick
Thank you to our wonderful community. Through your support, Haileybury Foundation continues to change the lives of students. We look forward to sharing the journey of all our scholarship students as they immerse themselves in our School.

Dance Star and School Aerobics National Championships
On Friday, 19 to Monday, 22 August, the Grades 5 to 8 and Senior School Dance Teams, and the Grades 5 to 8 Aerobics Teams, competed in the TFT Dance Star and School Aerobics National Championships on the Gold Coast.
Our teams and soloists competed against schools, dance schools and aerobics clubs from across the country, and the results achieved were some of the best results we have seen at Nationals to date.
Those results are a testament to the hard work, time, effort, passion and dedication of our amazing students and their coaches.
Haileybury has certainly developed a name for itself as one of the most competitive and successful schools in the country—most notably in the field of dance.
Congratulations to all our competitors for their incredible performances. We are super proud of you and your amazing results.
Archie Roberts (Year 11) has been selected to trial for the AFL Futures program.
A series of scheduled matches are an opportunity for the best young players in the country to push their case for selection for the 2022 NAB AFL All Stars Futures match, which will be played on AFL Grand Final Day.
The matches also allow players to be part of a high-performance program in preparation for their draft season next year.
We wish Archie all the very best.
State Baseball for Mace
Mace Poole
(Year 11) recently represented Victoria in the School Sport Australia (SSA) U18 Baseball Championships.

Athletics has started in earnest and we have seen the largest number of students taking part.
Students from Years 7 to 12 are all encouraged to participate and to experience coaching from arguably the best mentors in the state.
The Senior Girls have been successful in winning a silver medal in the Division 1 Volleyball Victoria Four Day Schools Cup. The final was extremely close, with Caulfield Grammar just gaining supremacy.
The team has qualified for National Championships in Brisbane at the end of the year.
We wish the team the best.

CEO | Principal's Report - Issue 16

Early Learning Centre

On Sunday, 21 August, our Haileybury Pipes & Drums No 2 Band attended Competition 4 at Ballarat Grammar. It was a wonderful day, albeit uncomfortably cold, but the band persevered.
We saw great performances all around with some students debuting their new Pipes & Drums skills at their very first competition. We are very proud of all P&D B band members who participated during the weekend.

Special thanks must go to the many staff who lead the band program on a weekly basis.
